On Gear Live: Apple’s $400,000,000 Secret to Saving the Planet

Victoria BeckhamI love how celebrities think their lives are so interesting that the masses will watch every detail played out on television. Well, in some cases, I suppose it’s interesting. In this case, I’m not so sure. Victoria Beckham, a.k.a. Posh Spice, is negotiating her own reality series. An unnamed source says that the decision will be “coming very soon.” Reportedly, the show will be on NBC and details have not yet been ironed out. The rumors do speculate that the show will not focus as much on husband, David Beckham, or their three children. Instead, the series would take an inside look at her fashion business and her move to America in mid-July. Since David Beckham will be playing for the L.A. Galaxy team in a super lucrative deal, why not let the misses putter around with her little reality show?

Las VegasLas Vegas seems like one of those shows that just floats by, quietly… and the next thing you know, it’s in its fifth season! I feel like I must have dozed off during a couple of seasons in there, because I had no idea that it had been on that long. Now I realize, just because I don’t watch it, doesn’t mean that there aren’t plenty of viewers out there. In fact, about 9 million viewers tune in each week. The renewal will put Las Vegas into the 2007-08 season, leading to the 100 episode mark, which translates to syndication. According to Kevin Reilly, NBC Entertainment Chief, “The cast and producers have consistently given us what we want from Las Vegas—pure entertainment—and we’re looking forward to another fun ride next season with the show.” The last episode for this season airs March 9th.

Girls Next Door If you’ve ever watched the Girls Next Door, the reality series that chronicles the happenings of Playboy Hugh Hefner and his three girlfriends, you may have noticed that Holly seems to have the most affection for the old guy. Reports are swirling that Hef may actually tie the knot. His number one girlfriend, Holly Madison, is just 27-years-old. Hef, on the other hand? 80?! The New York Post broke the news on Monday, saying that the nuptials are expected before the end of the year. An insider was quoted as saying, “This is very secret, but the word is ‘yes.’ Hef has decided he will marry Holly, and he wants it for his show, The Girls Next Door. Hef thinks business all the time, and looks for a new hook, although he also does really love Holly.” Hmmm. Sounds like a way to get more viewers to tune in, like he’s all business. And, oh yeah, he loves her too. I love how that part is secondary. Question is, how will his other two girlfriends feel about this—and will Bridget Marquardt and Kendra Wilkinson still be in the picture? This inside source also said that Kendra and Holly don’t get along. Holly has been with Hef since 2001. The Girls Next Door‘s third season will begin airing in March.

American Idol When the sixth season of American Idol began, it seemed the males were going to outshine the ladies hands down. They came, they sang, they conquered. Group night impressed audiences, and surprise contenders on the male side seemed ready to prove that they had definitely earned their honor to compete. And then…Hollywood round ended, and it was time to perform. One by one, the men filled the stage. One by one, Simon Cowell shot them down. Most of the males didn’t seem at all ready for the big stage, the big crowd, and the big TV cameras. Even Paula had trouble finding positive remarks to make -–a rare enough occasion for American Idol. The very next night, the female contestants blew judges (and audiences) away with powerful pipes.

Ellen DeGeneres So, how did the biggest awards show of the year go, ratings-wise? Many critics predicted that this year’s broadcast would not be a big ratings hit, but boy were they wrong. Viewership for this year’s Academy Awards ceremony averaged 39.9 million viewers, which is about 1 million more than last year, according to Nielsen estimates. Most critics and viewers were not too kind, saying that Ellen DeGeneres’ hosting job was so-so, the broadcast ran too long, and the show was a bore overall. All that aside, seems people are still interested in the Oscars—and a million more were interested this year. If you hung in there for the almost four-hour tour, then you deserve your own miniature statuette for going the distance. Even with the swell in viewership, turns out the broadcast is no big winner in the scheme of Oscars past. The 1998 Oscars drew 55.2 million. I made it about half-way through, then checked out the results online this morning. Heck, with enough Internet coverage of the ceremony, you can even catch video highlights and bypass the snooze-worthy moments.

Oscars Though the 79th Annual Academy Awards were scheduled to take three hours (not including all the pre-coverage and after-coverage, of course), it actually ran almost one hour longer. What went wrong at the Oscars this year? Was it long-winded speeches (many of which were cut off by the music), unimportant backstage coverage, somewhat tedious tributes? The entire broadcast was just shy of the four-hour mark at three hours and fifty-two minutes, which many fans dutifully sat through just to hear which flick won Best Picture. Though host Ellen DeGeneres tried to liven the broadcast up with humor, a lot of it (even her banter) was tedious and seemed to take for ever. Without all the extras, the Academy Awards could run like clockwork, instead of putting audiences to sleep.

American Idol losing ratings? America’s most-watched reality show may be losing some of its appeal – or, at the very least, some of its viewers. Last year’s season of American Idol drew record numbers, some nights bringing in thirty million viewers or more. This year…well, the ratings are a little lower. Idol is still definitely on top even with a paltry seventeen million viewers, but the FOX hit is just barely the most popular show. Coming in at a too-close second is , the runaway CBS hit that has everyone talking and watching. Though American Idol and Grey’s Anatomy air at different times, the scripted drama is slowly overtaking the King of reality shows. Right now, fans can still watch both – but will Grey’s go for a more direct competition next season? And if they do…will Idol still continue to win the ratings war?

Christopher GuestChristopher Guest, the genius behind films like For Your Consideration, Best in Show and Waiting for Guffman, will be involved in creating a comedy pilot for ABC. But wait, it gets better because Arrested Development creator, Mitch Hurwitz, is also involved. If the result is only a fraction as good as Arrested or any of Guest’s films, it will be 100 times better than most of the stuff on television. Of course, you have to wonder if it will suffer Arrested‘s curse of low ratings and an early cancellation. The comedy is an adaptation of the The Thick of It, a British series. Guest has been away from TV for quite some time—you may remember his mid-80s stint on Saturday Night Live, but his last work for television was a 1993 HBO remake of Attack of the 50-Foot Woman. The Thick of It takes a humorous spin on the ins and outs of a member of Congress.

Anna PaquinHere’s one young actress who should never have a shortage of acting jobs. Anna Paquin, who started her career in the film The Piano, won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress at just 11 years old. Her roles in other films, including X-Men, have allowed viewers to watch her grow up onscreen. Now, Paquin will be coming to the small screen, in an HBO drama called True Blood. The show comes from the creator of Six Feet Under, so you can anticipate a great series. True Blood is a story of vampires, based on the book series Southern Vampire. Paquin will play Sookie Stackhouse, a mind-reading waitress. The vampires integrate into a small Louisiana town, assisted by the availability of Japanese-made synthetic blood. Paquin will also appear in HBO’s upcoming film, Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee.

Academy AwardJennifer Hudson struggled to gain notice and popularity for the first several episodes of American Idol 3. Today, she is the new hot actress in Hollywood. How did she make this incredible transformation? The young star landed the role of Effie White in 2005 (beating out former Idol Fantasia Barrino) in the movie Dreamgirls, an adaptation of the Broadway play. Hudson’s big voice and on-screen energy helped her finally gain fan approval (for which she battled on AI) and nationwide recognition in the form of the Academy Awards. It’s an honor just to be nominated – but to win is a huge deal. Though Hudson barely gained her seventh-place American Idol finish (she was brought in on a wildcard round), she won first place in the Oscar race. Hudson finally found the singing style that suits her best – and it shows.
