Last night, we saw a good match between NBC and CBS. Although the Peacock network was a winner with the viewers, the Eye network snagged the title for the demos.
8pm
- Deal or No Deal (2.6/8 in 18-49) dialed up 10.2 million for a rare Thursday appearance.
- The NCAA tournament (3.3/9) averaged 8.4 million for the evening.
- Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? (7.3 million, 2.2/7) failed by 2 million.
- Miss Guided (6.3 million, 2.2/7) did better than last week’s Lost repeat.
- Smallville (3.4 million, 1.4/4) went downhill by 400,000.

Thursday Ratings: CBS Wins the Idol-Free Night

- Survivor (13.1 million, 4.2/13 in 18-49) was the most watched show of the evening.
- Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? (9.3 million, 2.7/8) came nowhere close to Idol numbers.
- Lost* (1.8/5) kicked off its block with 5.3 million.
- My Name is Earl* (1.6/5) averaged 4.3 million in its hour.
- Smallville (3.8 million, 1.6/5) was up by 1.5 million.

In only its second outing, New Amsterdam saw a 20% decline. Despite the great lead-in, the FOX series couldn’t compete against Lost.

- American Idol (9.3/24 in 18-49) topped the evening with 26.2 million.
- Survivor (12.6 million, 4.0/10) was on track with last Thursday.
- Lost* (5.5 million, 1.9/5) saw a 300,000 bump.
- The Office* (4.1 million, 1.8/5) was a carbon copy of last week.
- Smallville* (2.3 million, 0.9/2) had some decent growth.

Maybe last night’s episode was a bit too confusing? Whatever the reason, Lost is returning to old ways and starting to see declining numbers. (Not that it would have been able to stop FOX anyway.)

- Approximately 25.9 million said goodbye to another four on American Idol (9.1/24 in 18-49).
- The same audience saw the same person exiled on Survivor: Micronesia (12.5 million, 4.2/11).
- Lost* (5.2 million, 1.6/4) had 200,000 wander away.
- About 4.1 million checked in with The Office* (1.8/5).
- Smallville* made a showing with 1.8 million (0.7/2).

While romantic date nights could explain declining performances for Lost and Eli Stone, the same reason doesn’t apply to Celebrity Apprentice’s improvement. By night’s end, CBS was again a winner with the viewers while ABC had the edge in the demos.

- Survivor: Micronesia (13.1 million, 4.5/13 in 18-49) lost 800,000 deserters.
- Deal or No Deal (11 million, 3.4/10) saw a 1.7 million improvement.
- Lost* (6.2 million, 2.0/6) slid by 300,000.
- Coverage of the NAACP Image Awards (1.4/4) drew 3.9 million.
- Smallville (3.7 million, 1.5/4) was off by about 300,000.

- Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader? (10.6 million, 3.1/8) did about the same as last week.
- CSI: NY* (8.8 million, 1.9/5) was up just a bit.
- My Name Is Earl* (5.3 million, 2.2/6) started NBC‘s night off on a slow note; The Office* (4.5 million, 1.9/5) went downhill from there.
- Smallville (3.8 million, 1.6/4) looked a lot bigger this week.

**Live coverage of the State of the Union Address (9 PM Eastern) will alter many schedules. Double-check your local listings for times.**
- Dance War (ABC, 8pm): “One contestant from the losing team is ousted after the first round of competition.” Those remaining will learn Bruno’s ‘I’m Still Standing’ routine.
- Gossip Girl (CW, 8pm): Pilot repeat. Late-comers can finally learn why Gossip is this season’s guiltiest pleasure. (And when I say ‘gossip’, I mean the show, of course.)
- In Treatment (HBO, 9:30: Series premiere. New therapy drama airs 5x a week with a different patient every night. Apparently Gabriel Byrne can’t handle them all at once like the masterful Dr. Drew.
- Making the Band 4 (MTV, 10pm): Diddy brings back all the winners and throws them together in one house. If they end up killing each other, he can finally start anew.

Two new episodes of Chuck couldn’t help NBC in the ratings race. When the smoke cleared, CBS was left standing with the viewers while FOX was holding tight to the demos.

- Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? (3.2/9 in 18-49) averaged 10.3 million over its two hours.
- The last new episode of Ugly Betty (2.9/8) closed up shop with 8.9 million viewers.
- CSI: NY* (8.6 million, 1.8/5) was down 500,000 from last week’s Trace.
- The first hour of Chuck (2.7/7) debuted with 6.9 million.
- Smallville* (2.1 million, 0.8/2) lost 600,000 from one week ago.
