New Gladiators Announced

Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Prime Time, Reality, NBC, Renewals,

Evan Dollard, American GladiatorsIn an action-packed two-hour finale, the two champions were crowned Sunday night. I expected more tough events and plenty of competition, but much of the broadcast was soaked with longer contender interviews, replays of favorite moments from the show and lengthy segments on the four competitors at home.

Twenty minutes were gone in the broadcast before finally gave me what I wanted - an event. The gladiators were in top form, making it difficult for any of the contenders to score points. Lightning-quick Evan Dollard did wow the audience with a spectacularly quick climb up The Wall, for the third time in the show’s history. “Soccer mom” Monica Carlson scored big in Assault, sending Gladiator Helga flying from the platform to smack a pool of water. Quickly, it all started to come down to the Eliminator - the obstacle course that’s broken so many competitors throughout the season.

Big Brother 9: Secret Lovers Nominated For Eviction

Posted by Jacci Lewis Categories: Prime Time, Reality, CBS, Showtime, Editorial,

Big Brother If you’ve read my past two blogs on , you may remember me likening the subscription-based 24/7 Big Brother house feed to watching paint dry. My information was based entirely on past seasons. (No one needed to see an uncut version of Chicken George in BB season 1.)  Based on what I’ve been able to pinch off the internet for free this season though, boy was I wrong. In fact, it appears the most interesting things that happen in that house are too naughty to show on network TV.

First though lets talk about what happened on Night 3 in the PG-rated version on . The CliffsNotes version is that pair Amanda and Alex nominated Jen and Parker and Allison and Ryan for eviction.  This after Jen and Parker decided to tell everyone that Jen and Ryan are dating and have been for 9 months. They did it because they feared Allison would spill the secret first. In the end, all this dumb bit of strategy did was prove that both couples are a liability and that Jen is a loud-mouth pain in the butt.

Survivor Micronesia: The Sounds of Jungle Love

Survivor Micronesia Logo

After just two weeks, has already proven to be quite an interesting season.  I don’t know if it’s because the editors have gotten smarter over the past 15 installments or the players have just grown wiser.  Whatever the reason – the past two episodes have kept us on our toes with some nice twists and turns up until the final vote.

Malakal – having just eliminated the controversial – returned to camp feeling like a whole new group.  Although his unexpected departure threw off some individual plans, it was hard to deny that life was better without his annoying presence.

American Idol 7: A Bittersweet Beginning

American Idol final 24

Way before ’s seventh season started, fans were treated to a PR blitz that capitalized on how different the show would be this time around. They believed; they watched; they weren’t disappointed. Season Seven certainly does have a different feeling and tone at times than previous episodes, and Wednesday’s final decision night struck a few sad notes.

One by one the fifty contestants were carried toward the judges who so menacingly waited. One by one they were told to take that long, disappointing ride back down without happy news to report. Enter Carly Smithson, devastating diva from Ireland who missed her Idol chance in season 5. She was the first female to win a Final 12 slot, and I breathed a sigh of relief. This talented lady has definitely earned her place. I was also pleased to see husky-voiced Amanda Overmyer and 16-year-old sensation David Archuleta join the final group. Poor blonde Brook White cried her whole way up in the elevator and grinned with relief the entire way down.

Deal or No Deal: How Far Will They Go?

Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Games, Prime Time, Reality, NBC, Gossip, Ratings,

Deal or No Deal - Howie MandelThere’s no nice way to say it: has had trouble in the ratings department the last few seasons. In an ever-increasing attempt to compete with the runaway success of and keep their own reality contest relevant, the network has launched a promotional tactic that’s doing nothing but mounting: The Million-Dollar Mission.

Every time a contestant on fails to win that million-dollar case, another million gets added. As of Wednesday’s Idol-competing episode, they were up to 13 (that’s right 13) million-dollar cases. The contestant has been chosen and the game is under way…but will she go far enough to get the prize?

According to the show’s official site, the mission will continue through next week. NBC is also throwing a special Deal or No Deal episode at fans Thursday night to drum up more excitement and ratings for the show. Host says he won’t give up until a million is given away…but how long will that take?

American Idol 7: Changing Up Hollywood Week

American Idol's Final 24 - Masked

As of Tuesday night, the broadcast of ’s Hollywood Week began. After weeks and weeks of watching auditions, fans finally got the chance to catch up with some of their early favorites during this intense round of multiple eliminations.

One hundred and sixty-four singers piled into the theater rents out for the show, with a relative few of them impressing the judges in their very first round. Taking the stage one by one, each contestant sang for the judges’ general pleasure (or displeasure, as the case may be). Those who won approval from all three got to sail through the first elimination round, earning a respite before facing the judges again on the third day. It was during this first round the much-touted musical instruments appeared, though precious few seemed to find success with these devices.

Big Brother 9: Exploring Co-Dependent Relationships

Posted by Jacci Lewis Categories: Prime Time, Reality, CBS, Showtime,

Big BrotherBig Brother 9: ‘Til Death Do Us Part premiered last night on CBS and either I’m desperate for entertainment or it actually looks like this might be an interesting season.  First off,  the concept of the game has shifted some. used to a be a random mix of people, stuck in an ugly house, cut-off from the outside world and surrounded by dozens of cameras and microphones that recorded every excruciating second.  They lied, cheated and formed unlikely alliances to survive but ultimately it was every man or woman for themselves.

They’re still in an ugly house, surrounded by cameras and microphones but now the game is all about the power of two. Each of the 16 house guests in Big Brother 9 had to undergo extensive personality testing. That information was used to romantically match them up with another house guest who could be their so-called “soulmate”. The new couples will sleep in the same bed, compete together to win “head of household” or “power couple” as it is now called. The couples will be evicted together or, for the final two, win together. The prize for surviving 3 months confined with people you’ve potentially grown to hate is $500,000.

Adding to the drama, four of the house guests know each other intimately. Sharon and Jacob, both 23, dated for 12 years until Jacob cheated on her. Neither knew the other would be in the Big Brother house. Jen and Ryan, both from Columbus, OH, live together and have been dating for 9 months. They DID know the other would be in the house but have to pretend to be strangers to avoid eviction.

American Gladiators: The Finals

Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Prime Time, Reality, NBC, Renewals,

The American GladiatorsFor many athletic competitors, bragging rights alone is reason enough to pit themselves against the toughest of the tough: the built, buff, brawny . But in this new incarnation of the show, those who have the guts (and chops) to face the Gladiators stand to win much more than a simple competitor’s claim. They will also walk away with a cool $100,000 and the right to join the Gladiators next year. But first, the four final competitors have to beat each other to gain the glory.

Confusingly, has scheduled the finals not on Monday (the show’s usual night), but Sunday at 7 pm EST. The two semifinal rounds put competitors through more challenges than ever before, hinting the finals will test them at every single event the show offers.

Paradise Hotel 2: Why, God, Why?

Paradise Hotel

I think it is just good policy to be leery of any reality show that airs first run episodes at 1 a.m. (okay, 10 p.m. Pacific… but still).  After a 4-year hiatus, FOX’s is back, though demoted somewhat to MyNetworkTV and the channel.

America managed to pick up the pieces and move on after the first season of Paradise Hotel ended without the promise of another. So why, you may ask, is the show coming back now?

There was a time when shows like Paradise Hotel, Love Cruise and Temptation Island seemed edgy and provocative (well, sort of). Americans were still in the dawn of the high shock-value, low morals era of reality TV. Now, at least in my opinion, we’ve all seen too much. Somewhere between Flavor of Love and Pants Off Dance Off, skeevy people who will do anything for their proverbial 15 minutes of fame have lost what little political capital they had.

Still, I’m not too proud to admit I love trashy reality TV as much as the next guy, so I was more than willing to give Paradise Hotel 2 a look-see. I confess, waiting up until 1 a.m. to watch the show made me feel a bit shameful and lecherous. The “TV-Mature” rating didn’t help either (a less-steamy version of Paradise Hotel 2 airs on at 9 p.m. ET).

O.J. Simpson to Appear in Jail

Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Prime Time, Reality, Cable, Gossip, Spoilers,

OJ SimpsonNo, not that jail. Well, sort of.

, who needs no introduction, smiled at Las Vegas officers when he was led into jail recently for a short stay. (Simpson was later released on bail). He talked about finding his golf swing and seemed disappointed he would now have to cancel a poker game scheduled at his residence, even joking with jailers as he took it all in stride. How do I know this? Because I’ve heard some of the teasers for Jail, a show on MyNetworkTV.

The reality show was being taped when Simpson was escorted into the Clark County Detention Center on January 11, and they hit the cable TV jackpot when the former footballer was brought in. One exec called Simpson’s stay “strange” and not what they “expected” at all.

The episode will air Tuesday, February 12 at 9pm.
