Reality Show Predictions Revisited

Phil KeoghanSo evidently I’m really bad at predicting the outcomes of reality shows (which, I know, already happened).  I mean, really exceptionally bad.  Now, I could have just buried my predictions from two weeks ago, but a man has to face his failures, so here we go.  (Oh, and blahblahblahSPOILERALERTblahblahblah.)

THE AMAZING RACE:
Just a few weeks in, and one of my finalists is already gone.  Not only was I wrong about Lorena & Jason being one of the three final teams, I was also wrong about them not annoying me yet.  Lorena’s camel-milking meltdown (and how often did you read that phrase?) was incredibly entertaining and also horribly, cripplingly annoying.  Still, Azaria & Hendekea are running strong and maybe I’ll be right about who ultimately gets to hang out with Phil at the finish line.  But most likely not.

AMERICA’S NEXT TOP MODEL:
My pick, Heather, was in the Bottom Two last week.  She’s still in it, but her not-great public speaking skills mean she may not be long for this competition.

The Amazing Race: Season 12: “Let’s Name Our Chicken Phil”

The Amazing Race

Instead of venturing to a new destination, the remaining eight teams stayed in Burkina Faso for their latest round of adventures.  In other words – the episode was surprisingly airport-free.

Having reached the last pit stop in first place, Azaria and Hendekea had the honor of kicking off the next leg of .  Their first mission was to follow a marked path to a nearby village.  There, the teams would find a tribal chief waiting with a clue….and a live chicken.  The birds – a customary gift of generosity – was something the teams had to take with them during their travels.  (They would not be allowed to ‘check-in’ without their ‘chicken’.)  Shana and Jennifer opted to name their new pet ‘Phil’; something about its spiky hairdo reminded them of the ‘cute’ host.

The Amazing Race: Season 12: “Please, Lord, Give Me Milk”

The Amazing Race

While eight teams were taking advantage of their mandatory rest period in Amsterdam, one team was seeking medical attention.  As a result of the last grueling bike ride, Ronald suffered a painful hernia.  (It was unclear whether he blamed his heavy daughter at any point for the predicament.)  Fortunately, a doctor was able at least offer a temporary solution for the cranky father.

The next morning, Lorena and Jason kicked off the departures to the airport.  Next stop: Ouagadougou.  While it took a little bit of work to figure out exactly which country they were actually heading to (answer: Burkina Faso), all of the teams managed to pinpoint their destination.  Unfortunately, flights to the West African country were few and far between, so it was important to secure seats asap.  Despite a very close call for Christina and the hernia patient, eight of the nine teams were able to snag an 8am departure.

Party Politics and the Writer’s Strike

John Kerry, Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton debatingThis is how it works. The Writer’s Guild of America has gone on strike. For most of us, this means that shows like House, 24, and a whole host of others won’t be on the air. But the writer’s strike has a bigger effect, and not just on our TV watching. Not only will this strike begin to effect the economy, but now it’s affecting the future of our nation. Because when party politics mixes with a writer’s strike, no one gets to benefit.

Let’s talk about Democrats. Support for unions is one of the bedrocks of the party – in fact, no self-respecting Democratic politician would ever be seen crossing a picket line. And right now, there are plenty of picket lines in front of TV studios. How does it affect you? If you’ve been looking forward to another Democratic primary Presidential debate (and there’s one scheduled December 10), you may wind up disappointed. Hosted by CBS News, this particular debate was scheduled many months in advance. But the Democratic contenders who will appear in the debate absolutely will not cross a picket line. That’s party politics.

Thanksgiving Day TV

Thanksgiving TurkeyThanksgiving Day is all about eating, and what goes perfectly with any meal? Plenty of TV – and all the major networks and cable channels will provide you with a feast this year, even despite the that has changed Primetime TV

NBC promises traditional holiday fare with the annual (a long-standing Turkey Day event). This will be later followed by - the version - which is a movie always worth watching. (I make it a point to watch this flick at least once every holiday season – it’s one of those must-holiday-haves, like .)

Or, you can take a small deviation from long-standing tradition with CBS, which will be showing an alternate Thanksgiving Day parade.  A handful of episodes follow, but don’t worry – football starts at 2:00 pm.  Meanwhile, FOX starts broadcasting their own action at noon with Green Bay and Detroit.
