Letterman Gets Four More Years

David Letterman has reached an agreement with ABC that will keep the late-night host around for four more years. His contract extension keeps Dave on the Late Show through the 2009-2010 season. Interestingly enough, this is one year past the plan for Leno to step down from the Tonight Show and pass the torch to Conan O’Brien. According to Nielsen Media Research, Leno continues to be the ratings winner, averaging 5.71 million viewers nightly, versus 4.16 million per night for Letterman. The rivalry has been ongoing since Leno took over Johnny Carson’s post on the Tonight Show—and it looks like the competition will now continue against O’Brien. CBS Entertainment and Letterman spokespeople had no comment about the negotiations since the deal is not official yet. Even after all these years, I still prefer Letterman to Leno—Leno is more corny than anything, but Letterman’s goofy persona wins me over. Goofy beats corny in my book any day, but what to do when Letterman and O’Brien go head to head? Two goofs—don’t make me choose!

Scrubs Comes to Comedy Central

Great news for Scrubs fans everywhere—Comedy Central has acquired the NBC sitcom and will begin airing old episodes of the series on September 18th at 7:00 p.m. The network will show the sitcom weeknights and Saturday mornings. David Bernath, senior vice president of Comedy Central said, “We’re thrilled to have Scrubs join the network. It is a very funny show with a great cast. Not many off-network sitcoms fit our brand and this one fits perfectly.”
If you’ve never seen the series, now’s your time to jump on the bandwagon of one of the funniest little shows out there. Follow J.D. (Zach Braff) and the gang (including John C. McGinley, Sarah Chalke, and Donald Faison) as they experience love, loss, humiliation (and more) at the hospital where they work. The ensemble cast is fantastic; the stories funny, but often touching. Overall, a nice mix of drama and comedy.

Wedding Crashers Reality Show Coming Soon to NBC

From the folks behind MTV’s Punk’d (okay, that would be Ashton Kutcher’s production company), comes the upcoming reality show based on the characters from the film Wedding Crashers. Working with NBC, Kutcher’s company, Katalyst Films, and New Line TV have created The Real Wedding Crashers, a hidden-camera series that sends a group of improv actors to crash wedding receptions. Craig Plestis, head of alternative programming at NBC says of the series, “Everyone loved ‘Wedding Crashers,’ and we wanted to see if we could capture that same kind of inspired frivolity in a real-life series. Working with Ashton and knowing his memorable experiences with the jokes he pulled off on ‘Punk’d’ made it that much more enticing. This series has a big upside potential for hidden-camera humor.” So far, no word on when the series will air.

Leslie Nielsen Returns to TV

It’s so great to hear that Leslie Nielsen will be returning to television in a regular role—that hasn’t happened since Police Squad! in 1982. Nielsen has had his fair share of TV guest appearances, and is likely best remembered for the Airplane and Naked Gun films, as well as his role in the Scary Movie films. Nielsen will be joining the NBC comedy pilot Lipshitz Saves the World, playing mentor to Lipshitz, the teenager who discovers he is the “one” to save the planet. Series writer Dan Fogelman wrote the part with Nielsen in mind, saying “I’m a lifelong fan and wrote the part specifically for him, never having met him, and with no knowledge of whether or not he’d take to it.” Fogelman has some writing chops, having co-written the Pixar film Cars and created a sitcom for the WB.

Zach Braff Leaving Scrubs?

Say it ain’t so… the rumor mill is buzzing about the possibility of Zach Braff leaving after this season of Scrubs. Braff was quoted in Premiere magazine, saying “My guess is that this will be my last season. Whether or not they continue without me, I don’t know. I have had this amazing run on the show and I love it and I’m so grateful, but I want to make movies full time.” Well, that sounds fairly official—coming from the horse’s mouth and all. Part of me, however, doesn’t want to believe it could be true. Scrubs has been such a reliably funny show, in large part because of Braff. While the ensemble is a strong group, I’m not sure if the series could continue to be as good without Braff’s character. Then again, there’s speculation that this just might be the last season of Scrubs since their renewal was announced late and the show will again be returning mid-season—both indicators that NBC isn’t that invested in the show. Braff certainly has talents elsewhere with writing and directing, so it’s not surprising that he would want to pursue that more and continue to grow his career in that direction. Still… his crazy JD character will be sorely missed.

Golden Girls: 20 Years Later

Omigod—it’s already been 20 years since Golden Girls first started?? That would make me… uhh.. uhh.. a Bronze girl?
To celebrate this notable milestone, Lifetime Television will be dedicating a full day to Blanche, Sophia, Dorothy and Rose. A marathon of the 20 greatest episodes will take over the channel on Friday, November 11th. The night will then be capped off with an encore presentation of the The Golden Girls Reunion. This day should be a huge ratings boon for Lifetime. The original airing of the reunion show brought the network it’s highest ratings ever for a special. If someone had told me 20 years ago that there would still be fans of St. Olaf stories in 2005, I would have thrown my chocolate milk at them.
