Thursday Night Shuffle for Scrubs, 30 Rock

NBC Logo Hey, as long as they’re both in the Thursday night lineup, it makes no difference what time they air. NBC announced that 30 Rock will be back sooner than planned—the original plan was to bump the comedy for a month to air Andy Barker, P.I., beginning this week. 30 Rock will instead be back on April 5th, as part of stellar night of super-sized episodes. Here’s where the shuffle goes down—on April 12th, 30 Rock will move to 9 p.m. and Scrubs moves to the 9:30 p.m. slot. 30 Rock will hold the 9:00 spot until its season finale on April 26. Then Scrubs goes back to the 9:00 time for a back-to-back showing on May 3rd. Got all that? A bit confusing, but shouldn’t cause too much damage for us fans of the Thursday night block. On April 5th, The Office will run 40 minutes, 30 Rock will begin at 8:40 and run 35 minutes, and Scrubs will run 35 minutes beginning at 9:15. Andy Barker will start at 9:50 (but will not be super-sized) and a repeat of My Name is Earl will show at 10:20. Clear your calendar for that night, folks… it’s gonna be a good one.

The Office Puts New Spin on Repeats

Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Comedy, Prime Time, NBC, The Office,

The Office Hey, reruns are a fact of television life—unless the show takes a major break (we’re looking at you Lost), you are bound to see some repeats on the tube. Never fear, The Office is about to bring you something extraordinary—a new and improved take on the repeat. Dubbed the “newpeat,” The Office will be reairing this season’s episodes with a twist. Two of the reruns will air on March 15th, but will include unaired scenes. Ta-da! A brand new viewing experience! The episodes are “Traveling Salesman” and “The Return.” “It’s about giving something extra to our wonderful fans,” said executive producer Greg Daniels. “Their loyalty must be rewarded somehow, and we don’t have the budget for 10 million muffin baskets.” No doubt this experiment will be a fun one for the fans. Count me among the many excited Office buffs who is looking forward to seeing the deleted scenes. Heck, I’d watch it again even if it wasn’t a newpeat! But wait, there’s more! Catch a special Office marathon on March 29th, featuring five episodes. And, for this very special event, none other than Office HR drone Toby will be hosting.

Zach Braff Signs on for Another Year of Scrubs

Zach Braff I’m a huge Scrubs fan, so this news made my day. Zach Braff has just finished negotiating a payraise for a seventh season, so it looks like a pretty safe bet that the show will return next year. Now I know, some fans of the show have not been as entertained as much as in years’ past, but it is still a solid show with excellent writing and characters. Compared to some of the drivel on TV, I think this show still continues to bring the funny. While this could mean a big payday for Braff, there is one teensy issue—his pay is contingent upon the show returning for a seventh season. No renewal, no big payoff—which rings up in the neighborhood of $350,000 per episode for the one year deal. This puts Braff’s paycheck in Charlie Sheen territory, although Sheen’s Two and a Half Men averages 15.2 million viewers each week and Scrubs only draws about 6.9 million. Braff will next be seen in The Ex, a comedy co-starring Jason Bateman. Two of my faves on the big screen? Be still my heart.

Black Donnellys Brings in Disappointing Numbers

Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Drama, Prime Time, NBC, Ratings,

Black Donnellys NBC certainly hoped that The Black Donnellys would bring in better numbers than the show it replaced, Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip. Turns out it didn’t perform well either, despite the hype. Donnellys only average 8.4 million viewers for its debut, only slightly assisted by the lead-in audience from Heroes. Heroes ran over into Black Donnellys’ timeslot, so the 14.3 million who were watching may have held on for the debut of Donnellys. However, they didn’t stick around—the numbers dropped to 6.8 million at 10:30 p.m. Studio 60, by comparison, averaged 6.1 million viewers during its last episode. I saw a clip on E! with Kritin Veitch where she said that Studio 60 is as expensive to cancel as it is to create, so NBC is certainly between the proverbial rock and hard place.

Las Vegas Loses Two Main Players

James CaanWow, two posts about Las Vegas in two days… and I’ve never even seen the show. Yesterday, we reported that Las Vegas had been renewed for a fifth season. The big news today is that two of the stars, James Caan and Nikki Cox, will be leaving the series. Caan is bailing so that he can get back to the movie business; Cox is leaving because of budget cuts. From what I’m reading online, seems that many feel the show can’t go long with Caan’s absence. He is really the heart of the ensemble and the show will be weaker without him. As for Cox, I haven’t seen much outcry over her leaving the series, so I guess the other women are more than easy on the eyes to fill Nikki Cox’s void. Caan commented on his first venture into television, saying, “I’ve had a wonderful four years, worked with great people and made friends for life working on Las Vegas, but I’m eager to return to where my heart is, which is film, and due to the show’s schedule, I missed some great opportunities to do that. I wish the show and everyone involved with it continued success.” Makes you wonder what roles he had to pass on, doesn’t it?

Posh Spice Brings Her Reality to TV

Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Reality, NBC, Gossip, Rumors,

Victoria BeckhamI love how celebrities think their lives are so interesting that the masses will watch every detail played out on television. Well, in some cases, I suppose it’s interesting. In this case, I’m not so sure. Victoria Beckham, a.k.a. Posh Spice, is negotiating her own reality series. An unnamed source says that the decision will be “coming very soon.” Reportedly, the show will be on NBC and details have not yet been ironed out. The rumors do speculate that the show will not focus as much on husband, David Beckham, or their three children. Instead, the series would take an inside look at her fashion business and her move to America in mid-July. Since David Beckham will be playing for the L.A. Galaxy team in a super lucrative deal, why not let the misses putter around with her little reality show?

Las Vegas Signed on for Fifth Season

Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Drama, Prime Time, NBC, Ratings, Renewals,

Las VegasLas Vegas seems like one of those shows that just floats by, quietly… and the next thing you know, it’s in its fifth season! I feel like I must have dozed off during a couple of seasons in there, because I had no idea that it had been on that long. Now I realize, just because I don’t watch it, doesn’t mean that there aren’t plenty of viewers out there. In fact, about 9 million viewers tune in each week. The renewal will put Las Vegas into the 2007-08 season, leading to the 100 episode mark, which translates to syndication. According to Kevin Reilly, NBC Entertainment Chief, “The cast and producers have consistently given us what we want from Las Vegas—pure entertainment—and we’re looking forward to another fun ride next season with the show.” The last episode for this season airs March 9th.

Amanda Peet Gives Birth

Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Drama, Prime Time, NBC, News,

Amanda PeetWith Amanda Peet’s character, Jordan McDeere, pregnant on Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, I almost forgot that Peet was due so soon in real life. Peet and her husband, screenwriter David Benioff, welcomed 6 pound, 10 ounce daughter Frances Pen on Tuesday. This is the couple’s first child. The Studio 60 star’s rep commented to E! News that “Amanda and her daughter are resting comfortably.” Peet and Benioff were married last fall. The question now is, when will Studio 60 return to television? With The Black Donnellys taking over the spot, it’s still unclear when Studio 60 will come back, if it does at all. This may leave many fans wondering what happens to McDeere’s little bun in the oven. There are six episodes remaining for the season, and I for one would like to know how things all turn out.

Jimmy Fallon Rumored to Take Over for Conan

Jimmy FallonFormer Saturday Night Live cast member Jimmy Fallon is reportedly being considered as the next host for Late Night. With Conan O’Brien scheduled to take over The Tonight Show hosting duties from Jay Leno in 2009, NBC is looking for someone to fill Conan’s rather large shoes. The New York Times reported that NBC executives are discussing a deal with Fallon, but the deal makes no promises that he will win the coveted hosting job. Carson Daly, host of Last Call, would love the job, but NBC has not yet made that an option. Quite honestly, I would much rather see Fallon take on the job over Carson. Fallon has hosted MTV awards shows in the past and even filled in for David Letterman in 2003. And he’s funny. I don’t think the same can be said for Daly. It’s unclear if anyone can really match Conan’s wit, but it would be nice to see someone like Jimmy Fallon taking over. The deal with NBC may not end in the hosting job, but does guarantee that any projects he does will be exclusively for NBC. Marc Liepis, a spokesman for NBC, told E! Online that “the stories are speculation and unconfirmed.” Fallon hasn’t done too much since leaving SNL, except for the films Taxi and Fever Pitch, as well as lending his voice to Arthur and the Invisibles. He’s got a couple of indie films coming up too. Personally, I’d love to see him on my TV every night—just have Tina Fey be his first guest. I really miss them on Weekend Update.

Soap Star Takes Over Hosting Duties on Biggest Loser

Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Prime Time, Reality, NBC,

The Biggest Loser The Biggest Loser is about to get a new host. Caroline Rhea, who has hosted the show for three seasons, will be passing the torch to soap star Alison Sweeney. Sweeney, who has played Sami Brady on Days of Our Lives since 1993, will begin hosting The Biggest Loser next season, airing in the fall. NBC said the reason for the replacement is that Rhea is going to work on other projects. “Alison is an incredible talent and will bring not only a great fresh face to the show but a huge, loyal fan base,” executive producer Ben Silverman says. Sweeney has appeared on Las Vegas and Friends,as well as a contestant on Fear Factor. Sweeney, who is just 30, has chronicled her struggles with weight in her 2004 memoir All the Days of My Life (So Far). Seems strange that she should have a memoir, but she apparently has a large fan base, as soap stars generally do. NBC is certainly banking on the fact that her appeal will bring in more ratings.
