25 Episodes Each for The Office, Earl

Steve Carell If you find yourself wanting more of The Office and My Name is Earl, next season is for you. Both series have received a 25 episode (each) order, a bump up from the typical 22. Plus, five episodes of The Office will be hour long installments. I’ve really been enjoying those supersized episodes, so it’ll be nice to have a handful of full hour shows in the fall. Thursdays next season will remain intact—so expect My Name is Earl, 30 Rock, The Office and Scrubs to continue their comedy block. Thank heavens. Thursdays are my night for TV, if ever I had to proclaim one. I even instruct my kids that Thursday night bedtimes need to go smoothly because I have major TV viewing. And, now I can breathe a sigh that Scrubs will, in fact, be returning again (albeit for just 18 episodes, but I’ll take it!). For at least another year, Thursdays will be the funniest night on television.

Jaime Pressly Has a Boy

Jaime PresslyAwww, Jaime Pressly gave birth this morning to a baby boy. Great news for her and fiancee, deejay Eric Cubiche. Bad news for fans hoping to chat with her last night during the live blog after My Name is Earl. She was scheduled to sit in and answer questions, but I guess other things were more pressing. Eww. That sounded kind of gross. Anyway, they named the baby Dezi James, in part for her fiancee’s Desi Arnaz impression; James is her father’s name. Pressly’s pregnancy was incorporated into the storyline of Earl this season and the season finale aired last night. She was nominated for an Emmy for her role as Joy, currently married to “crabman” Darnell (Eddie Steeples) and the ex-wife of title character Earl (Jason Lee). She can be seen in the upcoming film D.O.A., coming to theaters on June 22nd.

Scrubs—Renewed or Cancelled?

Zach Braff I have been through a mini-hell today, as one TV news site reported that Scrubs would not be returning next year. Then people started commenting that the show was, in fact, getting renewed. So, I headed over to Kristin Veitch at E! Online (she is a Scrubs fanatic as well and a reliable source)—she reports that she “heard from reliable inside sources that Scrubs has been picked for 18 episodes for next season by NBC.” She will provide more updates as she learns more, but was pretty sure the show would continue on Thursdays, although she was uncertain about whether the show would be a midseason offering or start in the fall. I have read plenty of critiques about Scrubs not living up to previous seasons, which is true in some ways, but it is still a solidly funny show and a lot better than some of those cheesy comedies currently on the air. Besides, it would be tragic for fans if the show wasn’t able to wrap things up. 18 more episodes? I’ll take it! By the way, Zach Braff will be hosting the season finale of Saturday Night Live on May 19th. I think I’ve died and gone to heaven—although I’m hoping that Jason Bateman will also pop over to SNL during Braff’s hosting gig. Sigh.

Wedding Crashers Fizzles

NBC logo NBC’s 10 p.m. time slot produces another casualty. The lighter fare hidden camera show (courtesy of Ashton Kutcher), Wedding Crashers is the latest casualty. You may recall that this time also killed off much-hyped Studio 60 and The Black Donnellys. After just two showings, the show, based on the premise of the film, Wedding Crashers, has been yanked from the schedule. For the next two Mondays, Law & Order: Criminal Intent will take the 10:00 spot. Not to worry, Law & Order fans… these same new episodes will also air on the usual Tuesday night that you typically watch Criminal Intent. Given lead-in Heroes’ success, you would think some of the audience would stick around for the next show. The Real Wedding Crashers pulled in a weak debut audience of 6.75 million people, then the numbers tanked for the following week. A glimmer of hope for the few fans of this new series—NBC may air the remaining episodes over the summer.

Lost: The Brig - David’s Top Five of Awesomeness

Lost: The Brig

Last week I mentioned that Lost should have always been a cult show and I hoped (in my heart, not in the article) that the producers would try to make Lost be even more of a cult show and forget that it also is (or was, if ratings are to be believed) a hit network show.  This week’s episode, “The Brig,” proved that if you send these thoughts out into the universe, well, they just might true.  Of course, I’m ignoring the fact that this episode was written and filmed several weeks before I put said thoughts out into said universe, but Oprah has taught me not to dwell on meager things like infallible logic as far as positive thinking is concerned.
“The Brig” was fan-damn-tastic, a really terrific, dark episode in a spring full of great episodes.  Can I find five awesome things about it?  Just try and stop me.

The End for Scrubs?

Scrubs So, last week’s promos for Scrubs made it sound a little doom-and-gloom when they announced there were only four episodes left. It didn’t occur to me that that could mean the last episodes… forever. All of a sudden, there’s been a bunch of speculation online about whether or not the show will continue after this year. How could it not? I mean, didn’t Zach Braff just get some major paycheck for the next season? Didn’t I read that even if NBC didn’t continue with another year of the series that ABC would pick it up? It seemed like all was good in the Scrubs universe. But now, plenty of folks are questioning if this is the final season… and not even Braff knows for sure. Braff said, “I don’t know about Scrubs. It will probably be one of those things that gets decided at the last second. I think it will be on. We’re just not sure, but there’s a chance that it will be on ABC, because they seem to want it.” It’s all pretty unclear, but apparently there is a cliffhanger at the end of this season, so if it doesn’t return next year, we may never have things wrapped up. May 15th seems to be the date that the decision will be made. Fingers and toes are crossed that we’ll be seeing the Scrubs gang for one more season.

Studio 60 Returns in May

Studio 60 There’s a few of us Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip fans left who have been wondering whether the show would be back or not. Let’s all give a collective sigh, because it’s set to return in May. Don’t get too comfortable, however. It’s a pretty safe bet that after the show wraps up this season, this will be the last of it. Hey, at least NBC is being decent enough to finish out the remaining taped episodes, but there’s no telling if these last six shows are going to wrap up anything. Add to that the weirdness that Studio 60 will return at 10 p.m. on Thursdays. It’s a shame this show never caught on with viewers—I think it was interesting and had spectacular writing and acting. Heck, I’m not even a Matthew Perry fan (sorry Chandler lovers), and I couldn’t wait to watch the chemistry between him and Bradley Whitford every week. The show will return on May 24th.

Alec Baldwin Leaving 30 Rock?

Alec Baldwin Alec Baldwin wants out of 30 Rock, but it’s unclear if he can get out of his contract with NBC. After his angry ranting voicemail message to his 11-year-old daughter was leaked last week, a lot of people were left with a bad taste about Baldwin. He taped an interview for The View which will air on Friday, apologizing for the way he spoke to his daughter: “Obviously calling your child a pig or anything else is improper and inappropriate and I apologize to my daughter for that. There’s nothing wrong with being frustrated or angry about the situation,” Baldwin said. “It’s the way you do it, and as people often do in this world, I took it out on the wrong person.” Apologies aside, Baldwin also said that he wants NBC to release him from his 30 Rock contract to spare castmates from any repercussions for his behavior, saying, “If I never acted again I couldn’t care less. I would like to devote myself to the cause of parental alienation.” Baldwin is writing a book to shed light on the subject, which he says was the reason for the angry message. If he is cut loose from his contract, what impact will his departure will have on 30 Rock? For many people, his character made the show; it’s hard to imagine anyone else filling his shoes.

Sharon Osbourne Judging ‘Talent’

Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Prime Time, Reality, NBC, Gossip, Rumors,

Sharon OsbourneIt’s official… Sharon Osbourne will be taking over judging duties for Brandy on America’s Got Talent. She’ll be joined by David Hasselhoff and Piers Morgan for the second season of the hit talent competition. According to NBC executive vice president Craig Plestis, “Sharon Osbourne is show business personified and she has seen and done it all. She will make an excellent fit with David and Piers, who we’re delighted to have back for another great season.” Yawn. How about the real reason for replacing Brandy this season? If you recall, Brandy was the cause of a Los Angeles car accident that involved four cars and ultimately killed one motorist. She is currently facing wrongful death lawsuits and may be charged with misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter. Brandy’s rep said, “Brandy has enjoyed her association with [America’s Got Talent]. However, she felt she couldn’t give the new season the attention and commitment it deserved.” I’m not sure what Osbourne can bring to the table, but this show is already so kooky, what’s one more nutty lady? And don’t forget, Jerry Springer is taking over as host. The show will begin May 29 at 9 p.m.

Alec Baldwin’s Disgraceful Voicemail

Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Comedy, Prime Time, NBC, Gossip, Internet, Rumors,

Alec Baldwin Oh, Alec. You’ve really let me down. After I’ve posted numerous blogs about your genius on 30 Rock… after watching yet another brilliant episode last night and wondering why people dislike you… I wake up this morning to read the news about the voicemail message you left for your daughter. Bad, bad Baldwin. If you haven’t heard yet, TMZ.com posted a voicemail message that Baldwin left for his 11-year-old daughter, Ireland. Apparently she missed their scheduled phone call and he went on a rant that included calling her a “rude little pig” and saying “You have humiliated me for the last time.” Oh, my heart just sank—I thought it must be some kind of joke. But, afraid not. Baldwin’s rep quickly made a statement that he “acknowledges that he should have used different language in parenting his child” but that “everyone who knows him privately knows what he has been put through for the past six years.” Uh, I don’t know—yes, he’s been through a lot fighting for custody of Ireland for three years (and the public will never really know the scope of his feud with Kim Basinger), but that’s no reason for speaking that way to your child. I’ve been over at the 30 Rock section of the NBC. com website and there are plenty of comments that people will not watch the show any longer and that Baldwin should be fired.
