Paris Hilton on David Letterman

While last-minute talk show cancellations are nothing new, ‘s absence this week is apparently something David Letterman won’t be getting past anytime soon.

On Wednesday night’s Late Show with David Letterman, the host spent a good portion of the evening reacting bitterly to the presidential candidate’s snub. (You can see that clip here.) McCain, believing he needed to suspend all campaigning to focus on the economy, called Letterman to explain the situation. But instead of heading directly to D.C. like he had claimed, the senator was found taping an interview with Katie Couric during Letterman’s show.

Although McCain’s camp later explained that they didn’t think an appearance on a comedy show would be appropriate, David continued to unleash his disappointment during Thursday’s taping. Coincidentally, one of the guests during last night’s program was Paris Hilton—a former McCain target. You can watch segments from Day Two after the jump.

Cast of Survivor: Gabon

With the premiere now just days away, it’s time to familiarize ourselves with the next round of castaways.

For the program’s 17th installment, the reality show will be kicking things up a notch. This season, the contestants will be “battling extreme conditions and interacting with wildlife such as elephants and gorillas” during their stay in Gabon. The filthy castaways will also have all of their flaws exposed in high-definition. (That’s a first for the long-running series.)

Host says the African locale is the perfect setting for the contest we will be seeing this year. “In a strange coincidence to Earth’s Last Eden—good vs. evil emerges as a major theme this season. I think the audience will quickly identify with one group or the other.”

Those somewhat odd and not-so-funny Microsoft ads featuring Bill Gates and are being pulled from the air. You might think it’s because they’ve received such a negative reaction (the entertainment media has had a jolly time poking fun at them), but Microsoft says differently.

This company never admits failure or defeat of any kind. “This was the plan all along,” said spokesperson Frank Shaw. “All along we said we were having a teaser campaign,” he explained. “We’re getting ready to start the second phase.” Betcha it doesn’t involve putting founder Bill Gates in the ads, this “second phase.”

When it comes to financial matters, some people cringe…others have an awkward sexual encounter on live TV.

Although Saturday Night Live was down one Barack Obama (he didn’t appear in light of Hurricane Ike), the audience was up one Tina Fey. As rumored, the former cast member returned to her old stomping grounds last night to portray her political look-alike: Sarah Palin.

In the hilarious opening sketch, Fey touched on several topics from the Charlie Gibson interview (her view of Russia, the Bush Doctrine). Meanwhile, Amy Poehler played an (understandably) jealous and bitter Hillary Clinton.

In her longest and most in-depth interview since the Republican party’s surprising Vice Presidential announcement, sat down for an intimate one-on-one with ABC anchor Charlie Gibson. She called him “Charlie” like they were old friends, he called her “Governor Palin” to remind us all that she is, indeed, a high-ranking public official. Otherwise, it might be too easy to take one look at her and say “wait, what’s she doing on TV?”

“Can you look the country in the eye and say, ‘I have the experience and the ability’?” Gibson wanted to know of Palin, whose short political career has never taken her to Washington, D.C. (Palin has not served in the Congress or Senate).

“I do, Charlie…” Palin affirmed, “I’m ready.”

In this case, she meant she’s ready to lead the country. But I saw her interview, and I’m convinced she wasn’t even fully prepped for that much.

Barack ObamaUPDATE: In light of Hurricane Ike, Obama has decided to cancel this appearance.

Let the political season officially begin.

Although it’s still unclear who Saturday Night Live will choose for their key political roles, we now know which candidate will be stopping by Rockefeller Plaza first: .

It’s just been announced that the Democratic presidential candidate will be appearing on the show’s 34th season premiere. Obama will just one of the high-profile guests this weekend. Olympic phenom Michael Phelps is also scheduled to host.

This will not be Barack’s first visit to the NBC studio. He last participated in a Halloween sketch back in November 2007. I wouldn’t be surprised to see in the upcoming weeks as well. The Republican nominee has made several cameos on the program already. (You can see one of those clips after the jump.)

Blake Lively and America FerreraQuestion of the day: If you claim to be friends with someone, does that mean you have to like everything they do?

In a recent interview with Seventeen magazine, actress admitted there were a few shows out there she could probably live without. The 24-year-old star of Ugly Betty and Real Woman Have Curves (great movie, BTW) specifically named programs where true female bonds were sometimes lacking.

“Close, genuine female relationships are not what generally gets depicted in movies and TV shows. Like, if you’re watching The Hills or 90210, all the backstabbing shapes the way we act – you go to school, and you think your job is to find a sworn enemy and be jealous of each other.”

Ferrera then went on to include a show featuring one of her Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants co-stars. “I mean, I love Blake [Lively]; she’s a wonderful friend of mine, but shows like kind of condition us to be mean.” Ouch!

Could this disinterest in GG be the reason behind Ferrera’s now famous eye rolling video? (You can see that awkward clip after the jump.) Or was the semi-mean comment really a result of her watching too much GG? Oh, the possibilities.
