On Gear Live: 2024 Nissan Z Nismo Review

Hillary Clinton and Tyra BanksIn the past weeks, campaigners on both sides of the aisle have changed their strategy and speechery to secure a bid in the upcoming Presidential election. Though many started out on this quest (twenty-plus politicians and actors threw their hats into the primary ring), only a handful now remain. In a continuing effort to keep themselves “viable,” they’re changing their stances and showing new facets of their personalities. (Hey, whatever it takes to get votes, right?) But perhaps none have attacked the idea of showing the public a new face more than . And she’s playing this one to the hilt, as her upcoming appearance on the will prove.

Oprah WinfreyBig news today. You can hardly get on a Web site without seeing the banner headlines - , megastar and money-maker galore, is getting a TV network. And yet, the is already hers, no? And isn’t she somehow involved with the , too?

At any rate, the will be taken over by the star and become .  (Naturally, because the woman is well on her way to OWNing the world.)  As it is, Winfrey didn’t even pay for the Discovery channel network.  She instead turned over her Web site to the Discovery family and became chairman of the network. Not a bad deal.

Re-runs of her talk show will definitely be on the network, which will be all about Oprah all the time. Can’t wait.

Dr. PhilFeigning concern for those involved, has canceled the show he was planning to dedicate to Britney Spears’ troubles.  Maybe it was because he actually started listening to his audience instead of preaching to them?

Here is a copy of the statement released through his own website:

“As was widely reported this weekend, at the request of concerned family members, I visited Britney Spears in the hospital. The details of that visit will, of course, remain private.

We had planned to tape a Dr. Phil Now show today, focusing not on the tabloid side of Britney’s latest problems, but instead on the very serious issues surrounding this case. Clearly, it is not just Britney’s family struggling to find a way to protect adult children who cannot be ordered or compelled to seek help.

Because the Spears situation is too intense at this time, and out of consideration to the family, I have made the decision not to move forward with the taping at this particular time.

Britney and her family are in our prayers, and we ask that they be in yours.”

Dr. Phil McGraw

You gotta wonder what momma mentor had to say about all this.  I’m pretty sure even she wouldn’t have stooped this low.

Dr. Phil, Britney Spears

UPDATE:  Dr. Phil has now decided against doing a show based on Britney.  You can read his statement here.

Despite being placed on what was believed to be a 72-hour hold, was quietly discharged from Cedars-Sinai this morning.  Although it is widely believed the troubled star should be forced to seek some type of help, the hospital had no choice but to release her.  They couldn’t keep Spears against her will unless they thought she might physically harm herself.  (She was not technically considered ‘suicidal’ when she was admitted to begin with.)

But fans concerned for her well-being shouldn’t worry— has taken it upon himself to make sure Britney knows people care.  The talk show host had a private conversation with the Spears this morning as she was being discharged from the hospital.  Here is the exclusive statement he made to :

“My meeting with Britney and some of her family members this morning in her room at Cedars leaves me convinced more than ever that she is in dire need of both medical and psychological intervention. She was released moments before my arrival and was packing when I entered the room. We visited for about an hour before I walked with her to her car. I am very concerned for her.”

Writer's Strike pictureThe is still raging on, but several notable daytime TV hosts don’t seem to care. At least, they are walking through the picket lines to continue with their work. The writers’ guild has publicly rebuked Ellen DeGeneres for these actions, though she is not the only host to walk past the strikers. Oprah Winfrey and Rachael Ray are also keeping their shows going, so The Ellen DeGeneres Show still has some ratings competition.

Ellen has canceled some New York shows, but her studio in LA remains open. DeGeneres says she’s remaining open to support her staff, as a mind-boggling 135 individuals depend upon her show’s production to keep their own paychecks coming. Her actions, however, and the actions of other daytime hosts, are not endearing to striking writers.

SNL Amy PoehlerIf the Writers Guild of America strikes on Monday as scheduled, you can expect a slate of late-night reruns to put you to bed.  Assuming a last-minute Sunday mediation session doesn’t prevent the 12,000 WGA members from walking out, daily productions ranging from to will immediately go into repeats.  So much for November sweeps.

The impact will not necessarily be limited to evening fare; daytime chatfests like may be affected as well.  Fortunately like my fave, , have stockpiled scripts that should leave them immune for months to come.

Tonight’s with Brian Williams could also be the last production for some time.  But given SNL’s lame tendency to air repeats anyway, who’d even notice?

Hand writingDespite a federal mediator and plenty of bargaining sessions, the and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers failed to come to terms on a new three-year contract. Talks ended after several not-so-fruitful hours, three hundred and sixty minutes before the current contract expired. The writers and producers are stymied over one central issue: the pay writers receive when work is released on DVD. DVD sales are huge, and have been since the discovery that people will actually pay to own episodes of television shows they watched the first time they aired. Even syndication hasn’t hurt the DVD sales of old TV episodes, and the writers want their cut. Well, the producers don’t want to give it to them. That, in a nutshell, is what all this strike talk is about.
