TV Land’s ‘Myths & Legends’ Returns

Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Reality, Cable, Gossip, Ratings, Renewals,
TV Land’s original Myths & Legends series has been renewed for a second season, back to shed light on the famous stories, rumors and half-truths which have become part of our favorite past shows and performers.
The second season begins August 27 at 10 pm and will air in half-hour increments. The first season of the series, which explored the legendary status of Carly Simon’s You’re So Vain among other notable Hollywood stories, snagged nearly a million viewers per episode - huge numbers for a cable channel of TV Land’s ilk. The series offers a rare glimpse into the world of celebrity and TV show rumors, exposing the answers (and the truths) that make TV worth watching in the first place.

Reality Renewals: ‘The Mole’ and ‘The Two Coreys’

Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Games, Prime Time, Reality, ABC, Cable, Renewals,
At what point did A&E become less about Arts and more about Entertainment? The cable channel - which already boasts quality programs like Gene Simmons Family Jewels - has just chosen to bring back the The Two Coreys, starring Corey Feldman and Corey Haim. (Apparently it takes more than one season for those Lost Boys to talk about their glory years.)
This spring, the horribly-painful-to-watch series promies to bring “more drama, tension and laughs as they struggle to make their relationship and careers work.” Wasn’t that the theme last year? I’d think it would be safe to blame the writers’ strike for this renewed interest in their sad lives. As much as I enjoyed watching Haim cry about not having a girlfriend in his life, I don’t think I could do it again. Well, maybe….
Meanwhile, ABC is dusting off one of their own reality classics: The Mole. (I don’t think that revival will ever reach American Gladiator-proportions.) The only reason I fondly remember the series was because it brought Anderson Cooper into the primetime spotlight long before he was deemed a credible news source. (Prior to that, I had been admiring him during the pre-dawn hours on World News Now.)

Debut Review: American Gladiators

Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Prime Time, Reality, NBC, Renewals,
Zap. Nitro. Lace. Gemini. I’m not just being random here, I’m naming the original American Gladiators. For those of us whose memories stretch back that far, American Gladiators was a great show to watch - and it‘s even better to remember. Original, inspiring and chock-full of muscle-bound beauty, Gladiators ran from 1989 to 1996 and won viewers from a wide range of demographics. Young, old, scrawny or buff, everyone likes to see a single contestant best all the power that strength has to offer.
But I have to make a confession: when I heard NBC was bringing this one back, I rolled my eyes and made a crack about this network’s sheer desperation to find programming. (Frankly, I stand by and maintain I’m not far from wrong. We are talking, after all, about the network which brought back Bionic Woman and Knight Rider…I mean, come on).
But I was wrong. There, I said it. I’ll give this one - just this one - to NBC. It was a good idea to bring back American Gladiators, and after Sunday night’s two-hour debut I’m already hooked. Hulk Hogan and Laila Ali are the perfect hosts, both personable and professionally known for their musculature, and the new gladiators are just as ripped and menacing as the former muscle-bound group who once sent challengers toppling.

‘Amazing Race 13’ A Go

Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Prime Time, Reality, CBS, Amazing Race, The, Renewals,
It should come as no surprise that CBS is renewing The Amazing Race for a 13th installment. The Emmy award-winning show is addicting, fast-paced and filled with colorful characters. It also doesn’t require any writers.
Although Race is coming very close to matching Survivor’s lengthy life span, the Jerry Bruckheimer production doesn’t feel nearly as tired as its predecessor. Unlike the Mark Burnett creation (currently on Round 15), the reality competition actually looks like its being filmed in a new location every single season. (Plus, the show has my personal fave - host Phil Keoghan.)
The Amazing Race 12 currently airs Sundays @ 8pm on CBS.

FOX Picks Up ‘Back To You’

Posted by David Onda Categories: Comedy, Prime Time, ABC, FOX, Editorial, News, Ratings, Renewals,

Sometimes network executives boggle the mind with the shows they decide to pick up or, adversely, kick to the curb. One such moment is FOX’s decision to pick up the horribly hacky news anchor comedy, Back To You, for a full 24-episode season. Are you kidding me? Ok, I like Kelsey Grammer, I really do - and I think he has a lot of dry comedy potential. But Patricia Heaton? Uck! There is nothing about Heaton that would make me subject myself to a half hour of listening to her voice set up hacky jokes that are only validated by some crappy laugh-track. And with the not-off-the-charts ratings the show has gotten, I’d guess that I’m not alone. How a great show like HBO’s Lucky Louie gets dumped while this show is allowed to stay on the air is beyond me.
Oh yeah, and ABC picked up six more scripts for Samantha Who?. More like, “Samantha Who gives a crap?”

‘October Road’ Returns to ABC

Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Drama, Prime Time, ABC, Renewals,
October Road, the show that made a brief appearance last March, will be returning to ABC next month. The show stars Bryan Greenberg as Nick Garrett, a famous author who returns to his home town after 10 years away. (I tell you this because chances are you didn’t watch it either.) Laura Prepon (That 70’s Show) plays Nick’s ex-girlfriend and mother of his possible child.
October will make a one-stint appearance Thursday, Nov. 22nd @ 10pm. It will then slide into its regular time slot starting Monday, Nov. 26th @ 10pm (presumably after The Bachelor is wrapped up).
I hate to say the series won’t last more than another six episodes—but I’ll go and ahead and do just that. The last time a show made a one-time Thursday appearance, it quickly disappeared days later. (If you haven’t guessed, I was referring to Viva Laughlin.) And has anyone else noticed that October is premiering on Thanksgiving?? My bet’s on four new episodes…tops.

Jon Stewart Continues Daily Show Through 2010

Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Comedy, Talk Shows, Cable, Daily Show, The, Renewals,
Yesterday, after I posted about the new Daily Show website, I went over and tried to find some of my favorite clips. Only, I couldn’t get it to load. Seems other rabid fans were jamming up the works and so I was left broken hearted. I did check in later last night and was able to find a favorite Steve Carell clip, so life is good again. And life is great for Jon Stewart, who has extended his contract with Comedy Central. Under the extension, he will continue to host the show through 2010. Ahh. Let’s all take a collective sigh of relief… although could you really expect him to go anywhere just yet? And Stewart is pleased as well, saying, “I love doing this show. I feel like I work with and for the best in the business. I look forward to using this extension to having great fun at President Colbert’s expense.” Stewart is, of course, riding high with both The Daily Show‘s and The Colbert Report‘s success, and will have a new show from his Busboy Productions Inc., called Important Things with Demetri Martin. The man is no slouch, that’s for sure.

‘Private Practice’ Gets Picked Up

Posted by David Onda Categories: Drama, Prime Time, ABC, Editorial, News, Ratings, Renewals, Rumors,

I didn’t think there was a chance in hell that the Grey’s Anatomy spin-off Private Practice would make it halfway through the fall season. Let’s face it, spin-offs of hit network shows are rarely the gems that their inspirations were (i.e. Friends spin-off Joey). But the unthinkable has happened for Kate Walsh’s Oceanside practice—it has been picked up for a full season by ABC. Already a few episodes into the season, Practice is still averaging 12 million viewers. In addition to this news, TV Guide is reporting that Gilmore Girls’ David Sutcliffe will join the cast as Addison’s love interest, throwing a monkey-wrench in the developing relationship between she and Tim Daly’s Dr. Finch character. Practice is the second new fall show to be picked up. The first is the nightmarishly obnoxious CW show, Gossip Girl—proving that not all shows that get picked up don’t make you want to vomit. But that’s a story for another day.

Female-led shows on Comedy Central haven’t done so well in the past, but all that might be changing thanks to loud-mouthed, obstinate Sarah Silverman. The comedienne’s show was renewed by the cable channel, solidifying her as a comedy success. Silverman co-writes and co-produces The Sarah Silverman Program, in addition to carrying the lead role for the series. Last week’s season premiere found the show in a cushy spot on Comedy Central, appearing right after the channel’s most popular program: South Park. The debut showed Sarah yelling at the clergy, arguing about abortion, and in general making audiences laugh.
