Amazing Race: All-Stars

OK, I admit it, sometimes the “All-Star” concept can stink. But in this case, The Amazing Race may bring back some great contestants to have another go at it. Hey, if nothing else, it beats the pants off of the “family edition” they did! So, who will be back for the All-Star edition? So far, Rob Mariano and Amber Brkich of Survivor fame and David and Mary Conley (Team Kentucky) look to be making a comeback. Season five couples Colin Guinn and Christie Woods as well as Mirna Hindoyan and Charla Faddoul are also rumored to make the cut. Rumors were swirling that season six’s Jonathan Baker and Victoria Fuller may return, but thankfully the ever-grouchy Jonathan will not be on the All-Stars. Season nine winners BJ Averell and Tyler MacNiven and season five winners, Chip and Kim McAllister will also not be returning. The Amazing Race: All-Stars began filming in Miami last week. The remaining stars have yet to be confirmed, but look for this newest installment next year!

The Girls Next Door Renewed for Third Season
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Reality, Cable, Cable/Satellite, Ratings, Renewals,
E! has really hit the jackpot with The Girls Next Door—the show that chronicles Hugh Hefner and his three girlfriends. Oh the fun they have at that Playboy Mansion. But don’t any of them think it’s weird? I mean, the guy has three girlfriends. Why? Because he’s Hef! Hey girls—in case you haven’t noticed, the dude is old. But I guess his riches have clouded their vision. Sigh.
Anyway, E! has ordered a third season of the reality series, with the first episode anticipated for the spring. The show has proven to be a hit, with the second season premiere clocking in as E!s highest-rated original program since 2003. The second season opener gained 1.63 million viewers. I’ll admit it, I’m one of them. I’m not a regular watcher, but if I happen to flip by, I’ll give it a look. I just can’t get over it—3 girls, 1 old guy. What the heck?

The Bachelor May Return for 10th Season
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Prime Time, Reality, ABC, Internet, Renewals,
Well, although it’s not yet an official announcement, there is buzz on the Internet that another season of The Bachelor is in the works. It’s 10th season. And no, that’s not a typo. I can’t even believe that some dude has been handing out roses for 10 seasons. Daily Variety is reporting that the 10th installment of the show may air in late spring. The current Bachelor, which takes place in Rome, has not been as big of a draw for viewers as The Bachelor: Paris (which aired in the spring). The drop in ratings is likely a result of scheduling—The Bachelor airs opposite Heroes on NBC. The Rome edition ranks second for its time, and averages 8.06 million viewers each week. The two-hour season finale of The Bachelor: Rome will air on November 27th at 9:00 p.m.
ABC is expected to make an announcement about the renewal next week.

Emmitt Smith Wins Dancing with the Stars
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Prime Time, Reality, ABC, Dancing With The Stars, Ratings,
It’s official—after weeks of celebrities dancing, the winner has finally been crowned on Dancing with the Stars. That’s right, NFL’s all-time leading rusher took home the ugly disco ball trophy, beating favorite Mario Lopez. It’s been disputed that Lopez did a consistently better job on the show each week, with many speculating that Smith won due to his popularity. Together with his partner Cheryl Burke, the two danced their way to the top. Incidentally, Burke also won last year when paired with Drew Lachey. Said Smith of the win, “It is awesome! It is awesome! We came a long way, we really have.”
The nine discarded competitors also joined the finale to show their stuff—Joey Lawrence, Monique Coleman, Vivica A. Fox, Harry Hamlin, Sara Evans, Willa Ford, Jerry Springer, Tucker Carlson and Shanna Moakler. And so it goes, another season of the super successful celeb dance competition (who woulda thunk it?). Rumors are that the next installment of Dancing with the Stars could air as soon as March.

Kentucky Couple From Amazing Race Receive a Happy Ending
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Daytime, Prime Time, Reality, Talk Shows, ABC, Amazing Race, The,
Well, Kentucky couple Dave and Mary Conley didn’t go the distance on The Amazing Race, but they did end up with some riches after all. This sweet couple gained a whole lot of love from fans of the 10th installment of The Amazing Race, with their honesty for playing the game. Few on reality shows have played a straighter game than Dave and Mary, and while they didn’t make it to the end, they were handsomely rewarded by The View. They appeared on the chatfest on Tuesday, where Rosie O’Donnell showered them with gifts to show her appreciation, saying they were “so unbelievably kind and giving.” They had previously been offered a cruise from The View, but during this interview received a package of goodies including: $1,000 Carhartt gift certificate, an Apple PowerBook laptop computer, a Canon Rebel digital camera, vacations to San Diego, Disneyland, and the Grand Canyon, and a 2007 Ford Explorer Eddie Bauer edition SUV. As if not enough, Rosie then presented them with a new three-bedroom, two-and-a-half bath home. So Sunday night’s elimination on The Amazing Race had me openly weeping, and the prizes Dave and Mary received on The View left me in a puddle of tears. I can’t take much more!

American Idol Marks its Return
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Music, Prime Time, Reality, FOX, American Idol, Ratings,
Fox’s bread and butter, American Idol, will be gracing your television soon. Fox announced that the pop talent show will be returning on Tuesday, January 16th. With the good news, comes the bad—the season premiere will span two nights of two hour shows. How can any viewer endure so much Idol? Well, if you’re like me, you just skip watching the audition shows altogether. It’s too bad that the people auditioning make it past the first level of auditions to appear before Randy, Simon and Paula—just for the sake of some fun on the audition shows. No wonder the people end up mad—they think they’re good enough to make it to the judges, but it’s really a joke at their expense!
Following the premiere on January 16th and 17th, American Idol will pick up the usual pace of Tuesdays at 8:00 p.m. and Wednesdays at 9:00 p.m., showing audition highlights over the course of the episodes on January 16, 17, 23, 24, 30 and 31. That takes us into the semifinals in February, with the competition among the top 32 starting in late February. This is the sixth season of American Idol.

VH1 Plans Six New Reality Series
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Music, Reality, Cable, Cable/Satellite,
There can never be enough celebreality, at least not to music station VH1. The network will bring six new reality series, collectively known as VH1’s Wild Life. The focus on this group of series is music—hey, great idea for a music station! Brian Graden, MTV Networks Music Group President said of the new shows, “The breadth of this slate of music-based series illustrates, once again, that VH-1 is the only place for adults to go to see the kinds of music and storytelling that speaks only to them.”
The new shows include: Rags to Riches, Bridging the Gap, Ego Trip’s White Rapper Show, Man Band, and the Irv Gotti Project. No word yet on when the shows will air. Sigh. All of this reality show programming has me longing for the “good ole days” of MTV and VH1—you know, when they actually aired music videos.

‘Little People, Big World’ Star Injured
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Prime Time, Reality, Cable, Cable/Satellite, News,
The Learning Channel’s Little People, Big World has become an unexpected reality show hit. Following the lives of the Roloff family—with parents and one son who are dwarfs and two children of normal size—people took notice of their story and tuned in to see their challenges. Their 9-year-old son, Jacob Roloff, was seriously injured Saturday from a pumpkin launcher on the Roloff farm. The Associated Press reports that Jacob was hit in the face when the catapult inadvertently triggered. Monday morning, he was listed in serious condition at Legacy Emanuel Hospital in Portland, Oregon. A family friend was also involved in the accident and is in serious condition. Matt Roloff, Jacob’s father, posted on the TLC message boards that both his son and the family friend would require surgery but are expected to make a full recovery.

Nicole Richie—Too Thin?
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Reality, Cable, Cable/Satellite, Rumors,
Finally, Nicole Richie is doing something about her shrinking size. The ultra-skinny co-star of The Simple Life is now looking for help—her publicist told E! News that Richie has gone to a facility “to undergo diagnostic treatment to determine why she’s not been putting on any weight.” The rep further said, “She is working with a team of doctors and specialists whose focus is nutrition. It is important to Nicole that she achieve this goal in a healthy way, [but] this is not a treatment for an eating disorder.” For now, production of The Simple Life is on hold. Her weight has been of question lately—her response was that it was due to the stress of her breakup with Adam “DJ AM” Goldstein.
Last month, Richie responded to a CNN report that she was seeking treatment for anorexia, saying “Contrary to CNN’s false accusations, I did not check myself into an eating disorder rehab… I do not have an eating disorder, and I don’t know how many times I have to say it.” She also spoke out on the Tyra Banks Show, once again denying any eating disorder.
