Bravo to Air Taxicab Confessions

Remember Taxicab Confessions? If you’re not familiar with it, it’s like the equivalent of getting toasted at the local bar and spilling your indiscretions to the bartender. Only it’s in a cab and a hidden camera catches the whole thing. Taxicab Confessions originated on HBO in 1995 and was a long-running, Emmy winning series for the cable network. Bravo will begin airing three new episodes on Friday, December 29th. Then on New Year’s Eve, they will be showing a marathon. “Taxicab Confessions was ground-breaking as one of the original reality series,” according to Bravo’s Executive Vice President of Programming and Production, Frances Berwick. “This award-winning show was raw, moving and shocking while at the same time poignant in its portrayal of urban lifestyles.” No telling what the censors will do with the series, however. HBO allowed explicit comments to air, but not sure that Bravo (home of Project Runway and Queer Eye for the Straight Guy) will let that fly.

Seacrest, Daly Not Competing for New Year’s Eve
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Late Night, Reality, ABC, NBC, American Idol, Gossip, Rumors,
A bit of a slow entertainment news day when a possible rivalry between Carson Daly and Ryan Seacrest is a headline. The rumor that the two are competing for the coveted New Year’s Eve gig that Dick Clark has hosted for oh-so-many years was quickly dismissed by both Daly and Seacrest.
Dick Clark, who made the ‘‘New Year’s Rockin’ Eve’’ show an institution, suffered a stroke two years ago. In his place, uber-host Ryan Seacrest will be taking on hosting duties for the second year. Daly has his own hosting responsibilities for the night’s festivities on ‘‘New Year’s Eve With Carson Daly’‘, on NBC. The notion that the two would be fighting for Clark’s job seemed to be shot down before the rumor mill could even get warmed up. Daly told the ‘‘Los Angeles Times’‘, “Dick Clark is a huge inspiration for the huge success he’s achieved. But that’s where I stop. The world is changing. I’m young; I have my own thoughts as a producer. I’m not trying to keep his tradition. I’m trying to do my own.”

FX’s ‘30 Days’ Gets a Third Season
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Prime Time, Reality, Cable, FX, Cable/Satellite,
FX has really introduced some great shows, and 30 Days is no exception. 30 Days is brought to you by Morgan Spurlock, whose documentary Super Size Me opened a lot of eyes about the perils of fast food through his own 30 day experiment. In the same vein as that movie, participants of 30 Days are put in a situation outside of their comfort zone for a month. Spurlock himself has participated in one experiment in each season of the show, and expects to do it for the show’s third go around. In season one, he lived on a minimum wage for 30 days and experienced the hardships that many people don’t realize accompanies minimum wage earnings. The second season place Spurlock in jail for 30 days. His series is definitely eye opening for both the participants and the viewers. The third season of 30 Days will air in the spring, although the specifics about the premiere are not yet known.

American Idol’s Elliott Yamin—No More Snaggletooth
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Music, Prime Time, Reality, FOX, American Idol, News,
Elliott Yamin had a crazy fan base when he competed on American Idol. Will even more fans jump on board now that he’s undergone $50,000 worth of dental work? Elliott, don’t you know beauty is only skin deep? With porcelain veneers and 20 hours of dental time to fix his crossbite, we’ll see if the makeover was worth the pain of a new smile. Girlfriend Jaime Paetz said, “He loves to laugh, he loves to smile. I liked his old teeth, but if (the veneers) make him happy, then I’m happy.”
Beverly Hills dentist David Frey provided the dental work free of charge, so I guess it was a no-brainer to have the work done. “I’ve always wanted to have a nicer smile,” says Yamin. “I used to look at old pictures of myself, and I figured out how to kind of smile without displaying all my teeth.” Yamin just signed on with Sony’s publishing division for a songwriting deal and his debut album will drop in early 2007. Ah, plenty of reasons to smile.

Interior Design Competition Comes to Bravo
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Food & Home, Prime Time, Reality, Bravo, Cable, Cable/Satellite,
Bravo has introduced their latest reality show concept—called Top Design, the show will pit 12 interior designers, architects and artists against one another for the top prize. Hey, it worked for Project Runway and Top Chef, so why not? Hosted by Todd Oldham, uber-designer, this is yet another interesting entry into the reality genre. I poo-poo’d Project Runway until I actually got caught in a marathon airing and could not look away! “Bravo has successfully brought spirited competition to both the fashion and food industries,” Bravo President Lauren Zalaznick said. “Now our passionate viewers will be rewarded each week when they ‘watch what happens’ as the creativity and drama unfold through each pressure-filled design challenge.”
Okay folks, you know the drill. Each week the contestants will face off in a challenge, where they will be judged by design experts, and picked off one by one. The winner receives a $100,000 prize, a new car, an editorial feature in Elle Decor, and a showcase at a big hoopty-do event. The premiere episode will air on January 31st, after the season finale of Top Chef.

The Apprentice Returns in January—With a Twist
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Prime Time, Reality, NBC, Apprentice, The - Donald, Survivor,
The sixth installment of The Apprentice returns in January, with a heavy dose of contestants who are lawyers, plus a Mark Burnett twist. In this season, Burnett will take a page from the book of Survivor and subject each task’s losing team to a less-than-desirable consequence. In seasons’ past, the team who won each task would be treated to a special dinner or shopping spree, while the losers retreated back to the apartment to sulk. This time, the losers do their sulking as they camp in the backyard in tents, with outdoor showers and porta potties. The humanity! Viewers will also see a change in locale—former seasons have used NYC as home base, while the sixth edition calls Los Angeles home. Another fresh spin is that the winning team’s project manager gets to continue as PM until the team loses, and gets to sit in on the boardroom firing for the losing team. It’s nice to see them shake up the format a little, since this franchise has grown more and more stale as the seasons progress. Look for it on NBC on Sunday, January 7th at 9:30 p.m.

VH1 Big In ‘06 Awards—Big Waste?
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Award Shows, Music, Reality, Cable, Cable/Satellite,
I tried to watch the VH1 Big in ‘06 Awards, I really did. But I just couldn’t help thinking this was a colossal waste of time. I love awards shows as much as the next gal, but this one is completely unnecessary. But maybe that’s the point. The event kicked off with host D.L. Hughley telling a bunch of unfunny jokes at rapid fire pace, followed by the first presenters of the night—the cheerleader from Heroes and Tommy Lee. Ugh. They presented the award for Big Music Artist to Justin Timberlake, and even he seemed unexcited to be there. Next up? Backstage interviews to come courtesy of VH1’s darling, Flavor Flav. Double Ugh. That’s where they lost me. Appearances included Eva Longoria, Lance Bass, Kiefer Sutherland, Stephen Colbert, Joey Lawrence, Katharine McPhee, Masi Oka, lonelygirl15 (Jessica Rose,) and more, with a special performance by Dennis DeYoung. That’s a big “huh?” from me, but maybe Dennis DeYoung is making a comeback or something? Anyway, winners included David Hasselhoff (Big Comeback), Britney Spears (Big Mama), Stephen Colbert (Big Breakthrough), Janelle Pierzina (Big Reality Star, Big Brother All-Stars), Katharine McPhee (Big IT Girl), Kiefer Sutherland (Big TV Star).

Britney Spears Helps the Needy, Flashes Paparazzi
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Music, Reality, Gossip,
That’s the news, folks. You can’t make this stuff up. I just read on Reality TV World that former Chaotic star and music diva Britney Spears is donating 170 personal items to help needy children. The December 4th online auction will be run by Christie’s and include such exciting items as a junior high school paper she wrote that earned her an 88. The proceeds will benefit the Britney Spears Foundation.
Meanwhile, the latest Brit news is her recent run in with photographers, as she provided a panty-less flash that was quickly snapped and distributed online. With her recent split from K-fed, she’s been seen running about with Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan painting the town—and doing it without underwear, apparently. Check it online, if you dare.
Just a thought—maybe she’s auctioning her panties to help the needy?

The Biggest Loser Renewed for Fourth Season
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Prime Time, Reality, NBC, Ratings, Renewals,
The Biggest Loser will be back to fight the fat for a fourth season! NBC announced that the show would continue, despite a drop in viewership. The third season has seen a drop of over 2 million from the second season, averaging 7.4 million viewers. NBC exec Kevin Reilly said, “The Biggest Loser is a valuable franchise and proven competitor in a very challenging time period. The producing team has come up with unique ways to keep the series fresh, and we anticipate the next cycle will continue to produce life-changing results for the contestants and jaw-dropping reveals for the viewers.” The slip in viewers is most likely due to its timeslot, where it faces off against Lost and Criminal Minds. The current season will soon reveal the winner of the weight loss competition, who will win $50,000. The third season finale airs December 13th.

Bravo’s ‘D-List’ Renewed
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Comedy, Reality, Cable, Cable/Satellite, Renewals,
Huh, who woulda thunk it? Kathy Griffin’s unscripted series, Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List has been renewed for a third season. Bravo has ordered six episodes of the third season, set to begin in 2007. Seems the life of a D-lister is pretty engaging stuff, as the show has earned an Emmy nomination. Frances Berwick, Executive Vice President, Programming and Production, Bravo said of the renewal news, “Kathy’s unique style of comedy is brilliantly showcased with this series, and the new season will continue to show her D-List life in hilarious Technicolor, and her daily struggle to move up the celebrity food chain.” Her assistant Jessica, as well as her parents, John and Maggie Griffin, will also make appearances. The question remains—will Griffin ever rise in the ranks out of D-List status? Tune in to find out!
