Flavor Flav Next Celeb to Receive Comedy Central Roast

Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Comedy, Prime Time, Reality, Specials, Cable, Ratings,
Really?! I mean, really… Flavor Flav is the next worthy recipient of a Comedy Central roast? Have they run out of celebs or is Flav just a great source of comedic material? According to senior vice president of specials and talent for Comedy Central, Elizabeth Porter, “We only roast the ones we love –- and the world is clearly crazy about this guy. This event will be full of surprises as Flavor Flav is going to experience a whole new kind of love in this Roast.” Um, yeah, right. Well, at any rate, I suppose they can expect excellent viewer numbers based on the uber success of his VH1 reality show, Flavor of Love. It’s certain to be an interesting event, although no specifics on who will be poking fun yet, but you can bet there will be a lot to rib Flav about. His rap and reality show experiences, including his relationship with Brigitte Nielson, as well as his massive reproduction capabilities—Flav has seven children. The Comedy Central Roast of Flavor Flav will air August 12 at 10 p.m.

NBC Could Have Been a Contender

Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Comedy, Drama, Prime Time, NBC, News, Ratings,
When television was new, NBC was there. The company began broadcasting great primtetime way back in 1938, quick to jump on the newfangled creation, television. In the 1950s, NBC dominated television with must-see shows like The Tonight Show and Today. The network was even home to some great TV in the 1990s, including the hit series Seinfeld. But for several years now, NBC has struggled to keep its shows among the top ten Neilsen ratings slots. Back when NBC had only to compete with ABC and CBS, it seemed the network would dominate. Today, NBC struggles for ratings supremacy against both these former rivals and even the “new” network, FOX. The famous peacock has unveiled its fall schedule…will this be the year that NBC finally claws its way back to the top of the TV ratings game? Looking at the line-up, I’m thinking no. They probably won’t even get close.

25 Episodes Each for The Office, Earl

Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Comedy, Prime Time, NBC, My Name Is Earl, Scrubs, The Office, Ratings, Renewals,
If you find yourself wanting more of The Office and My Name is Earl, next season is for you. Both series have received a 25 episode (each) order, a bump up from the typical 22. Plus, five episodes of The Office will be hour long installments. I’ve really been enjoying those supersized episodes, so it’ll be nice to have a handful of full hour shows in the fall. Thursdays next season will remain intact—so expect My Name is Earl, 30 Rock, The Office and Scrubs to continue their comedy block. Thank heavens. Thursdays are my night for TV, if ever I had to proclaim one. I even instruct my kids that Thursday night bedtimes need to go smoothly because I have major TV viewing. And, now I can breathe a sigh that Scrubs will, in fact, be returning again (albeit for just 18 episodes, but I’ll take it!). For at least another year, Thursdays will be the funniest night on television.

Scrubs—Renewed or Cancelled?

Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Comedy, Prime Time, NBC, Scrubs, Cancellations, Ratings, Renewals,
I have been through a mini-hell today, as one TV news site reported that Scrubs would not be returning next year. Then people started commenting that the show was, in fact, getting renewed. So, I headed over to Kristin Veitch at E! Online (she is a Scrubs fanatic as well and a reliable source)—she reports that she “heard from reliable inside sources that Scrubs has been picked for 18 episodes for next season by NBC.” She will provide more updates as she learns more, but was pretty sure the show would continue on Thursdays, although she was uncertain about whether the show would be a midseason offering or start in the fall. I have read plenty of critiques about Scrubs not living up to previous seasons, which is true in some ways, but it is still a solidly funny show and a lot better than some of those cheesy comedies currently on the air. Besides, it would be tragic for fans if the show wasn’t able to wrap things up. 18 more episodes? I’ll take it! By the way, Zach Braff will be hosting the season finale of Saturday Night Live on May 19th. I think I’ve died and gone to heaven—although I’m hoping that Jason Bateman will also pop over to SNL during Braff’s hosting gig. Sigh.

American Idol Searches for the Next Great Band

Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Music, Prime Time, Reality, FOX, American Idol, Ratings,
Proof that the American Idol machine just keeps chugging along… comes the announcement that they are now looking for a great band. Titled (awkwardly, I might add) The Search for the Next Great American Band, Ryan Seacrest announced last night that they’re on the hunt for any kind of band—as long as it’s great. This new show is yet another gem in the Idol universe, with other highlights including American Juniors (remember that one?) and So You Think You Can Dance. The Idol‘s songwriters contest was just a glimmer of another take on Idol greatness. No word yet on who will judge the band competition, but of course there will be plenty of auditions and I’m sure the show will highlight those who didn’t make the cut. The judges will select their top 10, and then you know the drill—the viewers vote each week and the final three acts duel to the death for a recording contract. No official date has been set yet, but producers are expecting the show to air in the fall.

American Idol’s Four Finalists

Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Music, Prime Time, Reality, FOX, American Idol, Gossip, Ratings,
After the cast of American Idol’s season 6 were whittled down dramatically from six to four, the stage looked a little emptier. And last night’s performances, at least in the judges’ eyes, didn’t do much to fill the empty space. Though Idol finalists Blake Lewis, Melinda Doolittle, LaKisha Jones, and Jordin Sparks sang two songs apiece, they got harsh reviews from that famous panel of three. Even Paula wasn’t waxing poetic and oozing positive ego-boosters at random, and Randy Jackson kept it real – hard core style. Though Blake changed up his disco tunes and added a modern flair, the judges had little that was good to say about his BeeGees renditions. Barry Gibb, the evening’s mentor, was extremely open to the ways the Idols changed his songs, which is more than can be said for most mentors of the season. All four competitors sat through at least one round of less-than-rave reviews from the critical judges, three people who obviously expected to be blown away at last night’s live show and ended up feeling a little let down. But what do you really want from BeeGees night? Today, the performances are old news. What everyone’s wondering is who will be left out of the final three, and who won’t.

Wedding Crashers Fizzles

Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Prime Time, Reality, NBC, Cancellations, Ratings,
NBC’s 10 p.m. time slot produces another casualty. The lighter fare hidden camera show (courtesy of Ashton Kutcher), Wedding Crashers is the latest casualty. You may recall that this time also killed off much-hyped Studio 60 and The Black Donnellys. After just two showings, the show, based on the premise of the film, Wedding Crashers, has been yanked from the schedule. For the next two Mondays, Law & Order: Criminal Intent will take the 10:00 spot. Not to worry, Law & Order fans… these same new episodes will also air on the usual Tuesday night that you typically watch Criminal Intent. Given lead-in Heroes’ success, you would think some of the audience would stick around for the next show. The Real Wedding Crashers pulled in a weak debut audience of 6.75 million people, then the numbers tanked for the following week. A glimmer of hope for the few fans of this new series—NBC may air the remaining episodes over the summer.

Renewals Aplenty at FX

At least there’s one network that’s not so quick to cancel every new series. FX has announced that freshman series Dirt and The Riches will both be back for a second run. While I couldn’t get into Dirt, it seems to get solid ratings (and that kiss between Courteney Cox-Arquette and Jennifer Aniston probably didn’t hurt either). I couldn’t wait to see The Riches because I’m a huge fan of Eddie Izzard, however, I haven’t had the time to keep up. Thank goodness for DVR! After watching the first two episodes, I’ve been recording the others and will have a bunch of episodes to catch up on once all of the other season finales are over with. FX president John Landgraf commented, “FX now has six original dramas, more than any network in the history of cable television, cementing the network’s status as a leader in quality original series.” Dirt pulled in about 5.2 million vieweres per week, while The Riches drew 5.9 million. Rescue Me returns on June 13th, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia comes back for season three in September, and new seasons of Nip/Tuck and 30 Days will come later in the year.

Lauren Graham Sounds off on Gilmore Decision

Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Drama, Prime Time, The CW, Cancellations, Ratings,
Despite the recent news that Gilmore Girls has been cancelled, star Lauren Graham seems somewhat relieved with the decision. With a hit to the ratings and a hectic schedule, Graham is happy to see the show end. “I think it’s the best decision for the show,” Graham said. “One of the things Alexis (Bledel) and I wished could be different was the schedule, and it really can’t be.” Single mom, Lorelai (Graham) and daughter Rory (Bledel) have been drawing viewers for seven seasons, but last year creator Amy Sherman-Palladino jumped ship and the show seemed to lose its momentum for some viewers. Get it while you can. The final Gilmore Girls will air on May 15th. Graham can next be seen opposite Steve Carell in Evan Almighty. I’m sure this is not the last we’ve seen of her.

‘Lost’ to Continue for Three Years

Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Drama, Prime Time, ABC, Lost, Ratings, Renewals,
I reported on Friday that Lost producers were working to get ABC to nail down an end date to the series. While it was originally thought that things would wrap up in two years, instead the show will continue for three more seasons. Here’s the twist: each season will only contain 16 episodes, a much lighter order. The good news is that each season will air uninterrupted, so no more of that split season rubbish that had fans in an uproar. According to Kristin Veitch at E! Online, once the ending of the season finale airs on May 23, “we will understand why the show cannot go longer than 48 more episodes.” Sounds like big stuff is ahead—but spreading it over three years is going to be killer. Good news? There’s an end in sight. Bad news? We’ve got quite a wait ahead of us. Let the countdown begin.
