Can’t Get Enough Of Your Favorite Shows? Read The Blogs!

It’s the hottest trend in television: blogs produced by the ‘characters’ of shows. These blogs provide supplemental information and insights for the amusement and delight of television viewers.
Whether it’s Medium’s Joe Dubois’s journal detailing his psychic wife’s dreams, case notes from the lawyers of Boston Legal, or delightfully gruesome entries from several forensic dramas, these blogs are guaranteed to at least curb the hunger of salivating fans wanting more details about their favorite shows and characters.
Which blog would we most like to see launch? It’s no contest: the world needs one from the Grey’s Anatomy cast. Oh, the wonder that would be! Perhaps we should lobby for one. Which are your favorite television blogs, and which show would you like to see get one?

Katie Couric Leaves Today
Posted by Christopher Stone Categories: Daytime, Prime Time, CBS, NBC, Talent, News, Rumors,
It’s official! Television’s most widespread, high-stakes rumor of the year is now television history. At 7:30 this morning, Pacific Daylight Time, from the Today show desk she shares with co-anchor Matt Lauer, Katie Couric, the longest-serving (15 years) anchor in Today‘s 54-year history, told America, “After listening to my heart and my gut, two things that have served me pretty well in the past, I’ve decided that I’ll be leaving Today at the end of May. It was really a very difficult decision for a lot of different reasons.”
Couric went on to acknowledge and thank the show’s loyal and massive audience, “I can’t tell you how grateful I am for the support you all have given me.”
She explained, “Another reason this decision is difficult is my relationships with the people on this wonderful show….The notion that we’re a family is not just some cheesy promotional device. I really care about everyone here.”
Of her co-host Matt Lauer, Katie proclaimed, “I could not have asked for a more talented partner or a better friend. Just as Dorothy said to the Scarecrow, ‘I think I’m going to miss him most of all.’”
Beyond the departure announcement, the 49-year-old Couric confirmed that she would be working on CBS Evening News and 60 Minutes.

Is Katie Couric Today History?
Posted by Christopher Stone Categories: Daytime, CBS, NBC, Talent, News, Rumors,
Television’s biggest story this week centers around the speculation that Katie Couric, co-host with Matt Lauer of NBC’s cash cow, Today, is about to leave television’s Number One morning show to become the first woman installed as the sole, permanent anchor of a major network evening newscast, CBS Evening News.
The rumor that Couric, 49, will leave Today for CBS when her NBC contract expires next month, has been circulating since January. The rumor intensified yesterday when Television Week reported that a CBS deal for Couric had been “completed in principle” and the announcement of her NBC departure could come as early as this week. Similiar stories ran in the Los Angeles Times and the New York Daily News.
Pundits say that Couric’s Today replacement would most likely be Weekend Today co-anchor Campbell Brown, or The View’s Meredith Viera. NBC’s Today currently generates $250 million in yearly profit for the Peacock.

Simon Cowell Welcomes Auditions For “America’s Got Talent”
Posted by Rhys Alexander Categories: Reality, NBC, News,
If you’ve longed to embarrass yourself in front of America and receive scathing insults from Simon Cowell, but just don’t have the pipes to audition for American Idol, you may have your chance in America’s Got Talent. Cowell’s new talent show is open to anyone, at any age, with any sort of talent. The acerbic Brit welcomes anyone from age 2 to 100 to audition. I wonder if he knows what he’s getting into? If singers so easily annoy him, what will he do in the wake of contestants brandishing tap dancing and pig calls? At any rate, it should prove to be another hit for Cowell and a chance to humiliate the contestants, which of course means entertainment for us. Do you have an undiscovered talent? You can go here to find audition locations and dates.

“The world needs Bill Maher!” Or so says the New York Times in reviewing his HBO series Real Time With Bill Maher. We tend to agree. When it comes to debating vital issues with clarity and intelligence, offering razor-sharp commentaries, and volleying humorous, shrewd observations, Real Time, live on Friday nights from CBS Television City in Hollywood, is the authentic “must-see” TV. Over at NBC, “must see” is little more than an over-used ad slogan in need of retirement.
Whether or not you agree with Maher’s progressive politics, he’s an Independent, and humanely enlightened world view, for one hour weekly, he and his eclectic guests, everyone from Newt Gingrich to Gloria Steinam, lay bare society’s smoke and mirrors, political postures, and illogical conclusions. With laser precision, they expose the venal, corporate-owned politicians behind Washington’s curtains, who, indifferent to Planet Earth’s well-being, are waging a war on terra, and not on terror.
Maher understands that if we don’t heal our imploding environment, poisonous diets, outdated beliefs, as well as our greed and selfishness, fighting terrorism over there, or even right here, will be among the least of America’s problems.
In the case of Real Time With Bill Maher, it isn’t television; it isn’t even HBO. It’s simply the real deal.

Will & Grace: Cowboys and Iranians
Posted by Christopher Stone Categories: Comedy, Prime Time, NBC, Features,
“Cowboys and Iranians,” last night’s episode of Will & Grace (nicknamed “Brokeback Jack”) was a no-laugh mountain. In the “Cowboys” ‘A Story,’ Jack guilts Will into visiting Cowpokes, a gay country-western dance bar, to meet his new flame Travis. While dancing with Travis, Will learns that Jack’s new love has a cheating, self-centered heart.
In the “Iranians” ‘B Story,’ Grace aspires to culture sensitivity, hiring Pam, a prickly Iranian assistant who is all attitude. Grace tolerates the inefficient, insufferable woman until she learns that, like herself, Pam is Jewish. In the episode’s ‘Button,’ Grace laments, “Too bad I’m not Republican, then I wouldn’t have to worry about being sensitive to anyone. I’d just have to worry about being indicted.”
Overall, the script fell short of the series’ award-winning standards. But the laugh anemic “Cowboys” storyline benefited substantially from the appearance of Leslie Jordan in his recurring role as Munchkin closet queen Beverly Leslie. Beverly denies knowing that Cowpokes is a gay bar, then he once again tries to pass off his hot male companion as a “business associate.” In its eighth and final season, Will & Grace has delivered a few riotous episodes, most notably the one in which the cast attends a The Sound of Music Sing-a-long. “Cowboys and Iranians” is not among these gems. Ang Lee himself would have been hard-pressed to mold “Brokeback Jack” into a jewel in the Will & Grace crown.

Television programming is migrating to the Internet faster than birds can transport Avian Flu to North America. On the other wing, NBC-TV is looking to bring Internet fare to their “must-see” schedule. The Peacock Network has all but signed for Carson’s Cyberhood, a half-hour showcase for homemade video productions that are making the Internet rounds (think Brokeback Mountain parodies and sendups of the Bush administration). Carson Daly has already cowboyed up as host and co-producer. NBC envisions the series as a 21st Century take on the durable America’s Funniest Home Videos format. As on the aforementioned series, Carson’s Cyberhood will have clips vying for a cash prize. Featured clips will run from 20 seconds to two minutes. Eventually NBC hopes that the clips submitted will be created specifically for the series, rather than for the Internet.

Comedy favorite and former Conan O’Brien sidekick Andy Richter will soon star in a new comedy series on NBC. The show, Andy Barker, P.I., has Richter playing an accountant who can’t get any work. When he takes over the office of a former private investigator and starts getting phone calls meant for the former tenant, Andy embarks on a new career…as a P.I., of course. The talented Conan O’Brien is helping to produce and write the new sitcom, which is a positive sign of potential success.
