On Gear Live: Apple’s HUGE Siri Apple Intelligence Fumble w/ John Gruber - Geared Up 205

American Idol When the sixth season of American Idol began, it seemed the males were going to outshine the ladies hands down. They came, they sang, they conquered. Group night impressed audiences, and surprise contenders on the male side seemed ready to prove that they had definitely earned their honor to compete. And then…Hollywood round ended, and it was time to perform. One by one, the men filled the stage. One by one, Simon Cowell shot them down. Most of the males didn’t seem at all ready for the big stage, the big crowd, and the big TV cameras. Even Paula had trouble finding positive remarks to make -–a rare enough occasion for American Idol. The very next night, the female contestants blew judges (and audiences) away with powerful pipes.

American Idol logo As if American Idol needs any more fuel for the already astronomical ratings, the producers have announced some very special guest stars. If you tuned in last night for the first eliminations, you saw former American Idol Fantasia Barrino perform. But wait—there’s more! Ryan Seacrest also announced last night that there would be many big name stars showing up as special guests this season. Jennifer Lopez, Gwen Stefani, Jon Bon Jovi, Martina McBride, Diana Ross, Barry Gibb and Lulu and Peter Noone. It’s unclear what the theme will be for each show these performers contribute to, but the star wattage is impressive. Other fun tidbits from Thursday’s program include the announcement that Fantasia will star in The Color Purple on Broadway (with a quick glimpse of producer Quincy Jones), as well as the use of Chris Daughtry’s (another former Idol) song “Home” for the send-off of the eliminated contestants. Another former finalist will show up next Thursday—Kellie Pickler will be on hand to perform her single “I Wonder.”

Marcia Cross Marcia Cross, of Desperate Housewives, welcomed twin girls into the world on Tuesday. Her rep told People magazine that “Mother and babies are all doing well.” Cross and husband, stockbroker Tom Mahoney, named the girls Eden and Savannah. These are the first children for both Cross and Mahoney. You may recall that Cross was put on bed rest in January, which caused but a mere wrinkle in production of the hit ABC drama. Producers for the show just brought cast and crew to Cross’s home to shoot her remaining episodes before maternity leave. The set folks transformed Cross’s bedroom into Bree Van De Kamp’s room and I don’t think viewers were any wiser about it. At the time, bed rest was recommended as a “precautionary measure,” a typical procedure for women carrying twins. No doubt her kids will be just as beautiful as their mama. I mean, she has the most amazing skin and beautiful eyes, don’t you think? At any rate, congratulations to Cross and company!

Britney Spears In my quest to find worthy TV news fit for blogging today, it seems that Britney Spears’ shaving her head is top news. There’s no room for anything else interesting in the entertainment world. Between her and the circus that’s unfolding following Anna Nicole Smith’s death, there’s not much left for us to talk about. Anna Nicole, I can understand. There are so many unanswered questions, including the custody of her baby, that I see why the entertainment media has a lot of ground to cover. A pop star shaving her head and getting a tattoo? I don’t get it. It’s strange, yes. But, is it so newsworthy that the media has to keep covering the story? I would prefer seeing less of her shaved head until they actually have some news about why she did it. Perhaps we’ll never know. Here’s the thing—it will grow back. And when it does, that will be the top entertainment story of the day!

Cheryl BurkeCheryl Burke, who is a two-time winner on the hit Dancing With the Stars, has found a romantic partner in Matthew Lawrence. Lawrence is the brother of Joey Lawrence, who appeared on the third season of the dance competition. People magazine is reporting the love connection, with a pal of Burke’s saying, “They are definitely together. Cheryl is very happy.” The super talented 22-year-old and Lawrence were together at the Dancing With the Stars wrap party on Monday night, dancing in the VIP area. An insider also reported that she had a birthday cake for Matt, who turned 27 on February 11th, delivered to her suite at Borgata Hotel Casino and Spa in Atlantic City, where the wrap party was held. Lawrence’s rep had no comment on the pairing—hey, wouldn’t it be cute if he showed up on an upcoming season of Dancing With the Stars? And when did this kid turn 27? Man, I feel old.

Donald Trump Donald Trump has bet his famous hairdo for a wrestling event. He and World Wrestling Entertainment chairman Vince McMahon both bet their hair for the WrestleMania 23 event on April 1st. A recent taping of Raw, to air on February 15th on the USA Network, shows Trump challenging McMahon to a match. The challenge was brought on after McMahon wanted Trump in his “dubious Mr. McMahon Kiss My Ass Club,” as well as the accusation that Trump stole “You’re Fired!” from McMahon. Trump had some fightin’ words for McMahon, which will air on the February 15th show, saying, “I am here to challenge you to a match at WrestleMania. And I am going to kick your ass!” Of course, these guys can’t actually get into a ring (although that might be interesting), so each will have a representative wrestle for them. Trump’s ultimate challenge? “If my guy loses, you can shave my head. But if your guy loses, I’m going to shave your head!”

Stephen Colbert It’s official. Stephen Colbert will have an ice cream flavor named in his honor. Internet rumors have been swirling about the possibility of a Colbert-themed flavor from Ben & Jerry’s. You know you’ve hit the big time when you become a flavor, and it seems Colbert is as likely an honoree as anyone. The flavor will be called “Stephen Colbert’s Americone Dream,” a vanilla base with fudge-covered waffle cone pieces and caramel. The folks at Ben & Jerry’s describe it as “The sweet taste of liberty in your mouth.” Hmmm, that seems like a peculiar description. Since when do waffle cones and caramel taste like liberty, and why does that personify Colbert? Colbert, ever the quick-wit, responded to the new flavor by saying, “I’m not afraid to say it. Dessert has a well-known liberal agenda. What I hope to do with this ice cream is bring some balance back to the freezer case.” All in good fun though—Colbert will donate proceeds to charity via his Stephen Colbert Americone Dream Fund.

Kellie Pickler Remember cutie American Idol finalist Kellie Pickler? Seems her dad is the one making headlines now, given his latest arrest. Clyde Raymond Pickler Jr. was arrested on February 7 for assault. The arrest occurred in Albemarle, North Carolina, and he allegedly assaulted someone with a steak knife. He had several misdemeanor charges, including assault with a deadly weapon, assault on a female, and communicating threats. During her time on Idol, Kellie recounted how her dad had done jail time, including a stint for stabbing his neighbor in 2003. Seems his days of crime are not behind him. Kellie is doing well, despite the family trouble. Her debut album, Small Town Girl, sold 500,000 copies. She is also scheduled to appear in a sitcom pilot in the fall.

Robyn TroupAnyone who knows me has probably heard me rail on the “parade of mediocrity” that is the audition process for American Idol. I’m just the kind of guy that thinks that to get your fifteen minutes of fame, you must be able to do something significant to contribute to ... something. Looking like a jackass and not being able to sing don’t count.

But that’s neither here nor there. Tomorrow starts the first round of hopefuls that were talented enough to get to the Hollywood stage of the competition, and this is normally where I start paying attention to the show. Idol has the ability to make stars out of even non-winners, and in fact, not winning could end up being a major opportunity for you. Kelly Clarkson notwithstanding, some of the biggest names to come out of Idol are Jennifer Hudson and her meteoric rise to capture a Golden Globe and probably an Oscar, and Season 5 finalist Chris Daughtry who’s debut album just went platinum (and is a great rock album).

Which led me to have an interesting conversation with my wife last night. How is it that the audience has been getting it so wrong, since they are the ones making this decision? The voting should be roughly analogous to how sales should go, right? And yet, winner Ruben Studdard falters while Clay Aiken makes out like a bandit. What’s going on?
