On Gear Live: Apple’s HUGE Siri Apple Intelligence Fumble w/ John Gruber - Geared Up 205

Ryan Seacrest Am I the only one who thinks that Ryan Seacrest and Simon Cowell should just can it on the insults already? I mean, how long have they been exchanging stupid digs now? If you watched last night, you got the latest gay-innuendo-themed exchange. Ryan questioned contestant Melinda Doolittle about the hardest part of the competition, to which she answered the dresses and high heels. Seacrest took the opportunity to get a dig in to Simon, asking if he had “any advice on the high heels.” Back and forth they go from there…

  • Simon: “You should know, Ryan.”
  • Ryan: “Stay out of my closet, Simon.”
  • Simon: “Well, come out.”
  • Ryan: “This is about the Top 12, okay? Not your wishes.”

I guess it’s an attempt to interject some humor into the sweat-inducing competition, but it’s getting really old. Really fast.

Regis Philbin One of the hardest working guys in showbiz is going to have to take it easy for a little while. Regis Philbin, 75 (can you believe that?), has scheduled open-heart surgery for later this week. Philbin made the announcement today on Live with Regis and Kelly, saying, “There’s some plaque in some arteries and I got to get it cleaned out.” Huh, sounds a bit oversimplified, but Philbin said that chest pains and shortness of breath led his doctors to this decision. He also expressed his concern, saying “Darn it, I don’t want to do it. Nobody wants to do it, I guess.” Friend of Philbin, David Letterman underwent a quadruple bypass back in 2000. His recovery is expected to take five weeks and perky co-host Ripa commented that she would dress as a nurse and give him a sponge bath during recovery. In the meantime, look for a cavalcade of guest hosts to fill the void on the chatfest.

Mark Burnett Mark Burnett, the creator of Rock Star: INXS and Rock Star: Supernova, is being sued by a writer and producer who believes that he stole her idea. According to TMZ.com, Sharlene Sullivan is suing Burnett and CBS for more than $2 million. Her proposal: “lead vocalists for rock bands would compete and would be judged by well known musicians/rock stars” was registered with the Writers Guild of America in March 2003. Her idea started to see the light of day when she met with a director who was interested in developing the series, but eventually the director dropped out due to lack of interest. Interestingly enough, said director worked on the seventh and eighth season finales of Survivor and worked on The Apprentice—two Mark Burnett shows. She claims that Burnett used her “key ideas.” INXS claims that they conceived the idea in 1999, well before Sullivan’s synopsis was submitted in 2003.

Description American Idol and scandal have been friends for a long time. The second season of the show alone was rife with media stories, from Studdard’s law suits to Abdul’s affair, to one contestant’s cups that ranneth over. Plenty of Idol fans still remember the day Frenchie Davis was unceremoniously booted from the show because of topless photos. After leaving reality TV, Frenchie went on to find Broadway success. But she hasn’t forgotten her brush with TV fame and shame.

A recent article from the Associated Press brought Frenchie back into the television limelight, when the Broadway star stated that she would like to receive a public apology from American Idol. But that’s not all she wants, according to the article. Frenchie stated that she was humiliated by the show, and thinks that an apology would be “a great start.” The reason all of this is surfacing again, four years later? Her name is Antonella Barba, and despite performances that have been routinely called “pitchy” and photos some might think of as “porn,” she keeps hanging around the Idol contestant pool.

Anna Nicole Smith kisses son Daniel Medical Examiner Joshua Perper, of Broward County, signed Anna Nicole Smith’s cause of death as “pending” on her official death certificate last Wednesday. Yesterday, one week after the certificate was signed, Perper announced that a cause of death has been officially determined. Smith, 39, was found unconscious and unresponsive in her Florida hotel room on February 8, 2007. Hours later, Smith was pronounced dead by medical personnel at the Memorial Regional Hospital. One month later, at least one man finally knows some of the answers to the many questions Anna’s untimely death has raised.

But he isn’t going to tell, at least not yet. In fact, it could take weeks for the cause of death of Anna Nicole Smith to be made public, according to Perper. For now, the Medical Examiner’s office is waiting until the official police investigation is over before those results are released. The Florida police are out in full force investigating the details of the case, but reports say it could still take several more weeks before anything conclusive is determined. Until then, the cause of Anna’s death will remain a mystery to the rest of us.

Lane Garrison Well, here’s one actor that’s certain to have an E! Boulevard of Broken Dreams special. Lane Garrison, who had a glimpse of the spotlight when he played Tweener on Prison Break, has been charged with manslaughter, driving under the influence, and providing alcohol to a minor. In this case, life is imitating art, since Garrison has already played the make-believe role of inmate. Garrison was involved in a car crash that injured two 15-year-old girls and killed a 17-year-old boy in December. Today, Garrison was charged with vehicular manslaughter. If convicted, Garrison could have over six years of prison time ahead of him. According to his lawyer, Garrison was invited to a party by the teenagers and crashed his car into a tree on the way to there. His blood-alcohol level was more than twice the legal limit for California.

Kellie Pickler If you caught Kellie Pickler on Thursday night’s American Idol results show, you may have noticed that she looked a little more va-va-va-voom in the breast department. Me, I just thought she was wearing a really tight dress that showed off her ... ahem… assets. After her appearance, the web was swirling with rumors that the singer had gotten breast implants. Quick, someone call Tyra Banks. Season 5 Idol contestant Katharine McPhee just went on Banks’ show to declare that she’s all-natural. Pickler is remaining mum for now.

Many thought that Ryan Seacrest’s question to Pickler that night was a nudge-nudge moment: “Have you spent your money on anything since you left us?” he asked. You could hear the comment flying over her head as she giddily commented on her shoes. Access Hollywood wasn’t quite as subtle when they ran a segment called “Pickler’s New Pair?” Ugh. Anyhoo, Pickler is giving the “no comment” comment when it comes to matters of her enhanced cleavage.

Jerry Springer Ever the busy man, Regis Philbin has decided to pass the hosting duties of America’s Got Talent to fellow daytime talk icon Jerry Springer. Springer, fresh from his stint on Dancing With the Stars, will certainly have his hands full with the popular talent competition. Craig Plestis, from NBC, said in an announcement that Springer will be “the perfect ringmaster” for the show. He commented, “To say the least, he is known for presiding over an unpredictable show where the unexpected is the typical order of each day.” Springer commented on the new hosting gig, saying, “I’ve been around some of America’s most talented individuals on my talk show, so I’ll feel right at home hosting America’s Got Talent.” Philbin cited the “heavy travel schedule” as the cause for stepping down. We wonder if he’s just trying to keep his distance from David Hasselhoff (a.k.a. The Hoff).

Rob and AmberFrom the moment they first met on the set of Survivor, Rob and Amber (Romber) have been making reality waves all over television. They met, they fell in love…they outlasted all their island competitors. Then, in a bit of reality TV magic, Rob got down on one knee to propose to the lovely Amber – before Survivor’s million-dollar prize was even given away to one of them (Amber ended up the winner - by a single vote). From Survivor, they merrily raced to another CBS show, the Amazing Race 7. Fans will recall that the reality power couple was narrowly beaten out of another million-dollar prize by fellow Racers Uchenna and Joyce. All these seasons later, Romber has been cast again into competition with the one team that beat them.
