Rosie O’Donnell Leaving The View

The rumblings about Rosie O’Donnell leaving The View finally became a reality this morning when she announced the news on the daytime talk show. The outspoken co-host will be leaving the show in June, just one year after she blew in to fill Star Jones’ vacant seat. According to O’Donnell, she and ABC could not come to a contract agreement—they wanted her to remain on the show for three years, but she only wanted to stick around for one more. Fear not, she will show up from time to time during the next season, at least for an autism special, if not on other occasions. O’Donnell said, “It just didn’t work, and that’s show biz. But it’s not sad because I loved it here and I love you guys and I’m not going away.” While I’m sure Barbara Walters, Joy and Elisabeth are letting out a collective sigh—since O’Donnell turned things upside with her penchant for speaking her mind—it’s unclear how this will impact ratings. When Rosie came on board, ratings took a major upswing. With her departure, who knows? Walters commented, “We have had, to say the least, an interesting year.”

‘Tudors’ Star Breaks for Rehab

Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Drama, Cable, Showtime, Cable/Satellite, Gossip, Rumors,
Rehab seems to be the way of many young stars these days. At least they’re getting help, but it seems almost “the thing to do.” The latest to hit the rehab circuit is The Tudors star Jonathan Rhys Meyers. His rep, Meredith O’Sullivan, said of Meyers decision to enter rehab, “After a non-stop succession of filming, Jonathan Rhys Meyers has entered an alcohol-treatment program. He felt a break was needed to maintain his recovery.” Indeed, he’s been busy—playing Henry VIII on Showtime’s The Tudors, as well as the miniseries Elvis. You may have also caught his pouty lips in Bend it Like Beckham, Match Point, and Mission: Impossible III. Meyers will be back filming The Tudors once he has finished his rehab program.

Sharon Osbourne Judging ‘Talent’

Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Prime Time, Reality, NBC, Gossip, Rumors,
It’s official… Sharon Osbourne will be taking over judging duties for Brandy on America’s Got Talent. She’ll be joined by David Hasselhoff and Piers Morgan for the second season of the hit talent competition. According to NBC executive vice president Craig Plestis, “Sharon Osbourne is show business personified and she has seen and done it all. She will make an excellent fit with David and Piers, who we’re delighted to have back for another great season.” Yawn. How about the real reason for replacing Brandy this season? If you recall, Brandy was the cause of a Los Angeles car accident that involved four cars and ultimately killed one motorist. She is currently facing wrongful death lawsuits and may be charged with misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter. Brandy’s rep said, “Brandy has enjoyed her association with [America’s Got Talent]. However, she felt she couldn’t give the new season the attention and commitment it deserved.” I’m not sure what Osbourne can bring to the table, but this show is already so kooky, what’s one more nutty lady? And don’t forget, Jerry Springer is taking over as host. The show will begin May 29 at 9 p.m.

Alec Baldwin’s Disgraceful Voicemail

Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Comedy, Prime Time, NBC, Gossip, Internet, Rumors,
Oh, Alec. You’ve really let me down. After I’ve posted numerous blogs about your genius on 30 Rock… after watching yet another brilliant episode last night and wondering why people dislike you… I wake up this morning to read the news about the voicemail message you left for your daughter. Bad, bad Baldwin. If you haven’t heard yet, TMZ.com posted a voicemail message that Baldwin left for his 11-year-old daughter, Ireland. Apparently she missed their scheduled phone call and he went on a rant that included calling her a “rude little pig” and saying “You have humiliated me for the last time.” Oh, my heart just sank—I thought it must be some kind of joke. But, afraid not. Baldwin’s rep quickly made a statement that he “acknowledges that he should have used different language in parenting his child” but that “everyone who knows him privately knows what he has been put through for the past six years.” Uh, I don’t know—yes, he’s been through a lot fighting for custody of Ireland for three years (and the public will never really know the scope of his feud with Kim Basinger), but that’s no reason for speaking that way to your child. I’ve been over at the 30 Rock section of the NBC. com website and there are plenty of comments that people will not watch the show any longer and that Baldwin should be fired.

So Long, Sanjaya

Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Music, Prime Time, Reality, FOX, American Idol, Gossip, News,
It was fun while it lasted. Sanjaya Malakar, young American Idol contestant, was great for a laugh and gave us all “Something to Talk About” even before his Tuesday night performance fell flat with judges. But, for many weeks now, the consensus opinion has been that the young singer overstayed his Idol welcome. Despite the combined efforts of the Vote for the Worst web site and radio shock jock Howard Stern’s pro-Sanjaya-for-Idol campaign, the most popular contestant to ever grace the Idol stage finally fell from grace during last night’s Wednesday results show. The news was met with smiles from Simon Cowell, who went far enough to say in an interview that he would quit his judging job if Malakar won the title of American Idol. An obviously fed up Cowell soundly and roundly bashed Malakar’s rendition of the Bonnie Raitt hit earlier this week, saying it was “horrendous” and as bad a performance as the ones they see at the very beginning of each new season of Idol. In his usual concise fashion, Simon Cowell addressed America and more or less told them to cut it out. “It was funny for a while, but enough is enough,” was the gist of Cowell’s comments. After this word on high from everyone’s favorite judge, Malakar’s votes considerably dropped…and Sanjaya was dropped out of the competition as a result. During his tearful good-bye, Sanjaya changed the lyrics of his song, beseeching fans and critics alike to talk of something other than hair. Okay…how about bad singing?

Another Week, Another Idol Dream Shattered

Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Music, Prime Time, Reality, FOX, American Idol, Editorial, Features, Gossip,
When it comes to the singers on American Idol, everyone is an armchair judge. Though even the most avid fans will admit that sometimes Simon Cowell is a little cruel and unusual with contestants, he is also usually right in what he says. Last week’s elimination round saw the end to long-legged Haley Scarnato, whom Simon said during the first weeks of competition was “forgettable.” During her last few weeks on the show, it wasn’t Hayley’s voice that got notice from judges and fans alike – it was what she had going on (or off) below the waist. Fans weren’t the only ones noticing how skimpy Hayley’s outfits became – even Simon Cowell said it was a good idea for her to show off those legs. Hayley spoke about Simon’s comments and her own wardrobe choices to Ryan Seacrest during his radio show: “It’s just a costume, I would never wear that out on the street or anything…If my dad can handle it and my fiancé can handle it, then I’m not overstepping anything.” But it is interesting to note that Hayley, whether intentionally or otherwise, took the advice of the trio who host TVGuide Channel’s Idol Chat. On the air, hosts stated that Hayley’s got great legs – “she should show them off.” The very next week, Hayley was doing just that. Could be a coincidence. What’s not coincidental was Hayley’s elimination, which occurred after her rendition of “Turn the Beat Around” last week. Her departure has led to all sorts of conjecture on which Idol will be the next to get the boot.

Simon Cowell’s Controversial Eye Rolling

Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Music, Prime Time, Reality, FOX, American Idol, Gossip, Internet, Rumors,
I guess I must have missed it during American Idol last night, but Simon Cowell rolled his eyes during the critique of Chris Richardson. Nothing unusual there, however, it happened right after Chris sent out a prayer to Virginia Tech. This morning, the Internet was buzzing with Cowell’s inappropriate behavior. In his defense, Simon said he was responding to the comment that Richardson said about singing nasal-y. He was discussing it with Paula and rolling his eyes, but the camera caught Simon in mid-eye roll when Richardson mentioned Virginia Tech. It begs the question: is Simon Cowell really that cold-hearted of a person? On Ryan Seacrest’s radio show, Seacrest said, “We’ve got to clear this up. There are these people on the Internet trying to make something of this story, and let’s just be honest, no human being would be that disrespectful to anybody involved in that awful tragedy.” Cowell responded, “No, of course not… The truth was that I had switched off at that point. I was ... saying to Paula, ‘What does he mean he was singing nasal-y on purpose?’ I didn’t understand what he was saying.” I’m willing to give Simon the benefit here—while he plays a meanie on TV, I don’t think he is that hard hearted.

Rock Star Supernova on the Rocks?

Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Music, Prime Time, Reality, CBS, Rock Star, Gossip, Rumors,
The second edition of Rock Star seemed destined for crappiness as soon as they crowned Lukas Rossi their lead singer. The search for the lead singer of a new band, Supernova, started last year, and by the end of the show there were promises for a big tour kicking off on New Year’s eve. An entertainment news program reported that guitarist Gilby Clarke left the group, but Clarke says “I have not left Rock Star Supernova. We just finished the tour. I don’t know where they got that from. I did an interview with ET Canada, and we talked about the future of the band, but I never said I’ve left the band.” Whether the band will make it, well, weak concert sales and bad reviews for their debut album don’t bode well. Add to that the name issue, although Rossi said, “There will be a name change… the best is yet to come.” My bet is the breakup is yet to come. I’m telling you, they should have chosen Toby.

Simon Cowell Names His Five Idol Faves

Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Music, Prime Time, Reality, FOX, American Idol, Gossip,
No, Simon isn’t picking out his “myFaves” for T Mobile, but he is naming the singers he thinks are the top five in this year’s American Idol cast. The judge everyone loves to hate says this year’s Idols are “not a great cast,” and “not the best bunch of kids we’ve ever had,” but one of them is still going to win – whatever Cowell thinks. He says the race is very close this season, however, and names his top five favorites as Blake, Chris R., Jordin, LaKisha, and Melinda. These singers are often among the top vote-grabbers every week. But is Simon wrong this time? While Cowell has rarely predicted the winner, Bill Tancer from Hitwise has, according to the Boston Globe. Last year he used search engine data from sites like Google to predict the winner, and this year has named Sanjaya as the front runner in the contest – by more than 2 to 1. It’s true the young contestant has garnered more media attention than most, and is searched online more often than any other Idol on this current season or any other, even past American Idol winners.

Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Comedy, Drama, Prime Time, Reality, Sci-Fi/Horror, Bravo, Cable, FOX, NBC, Hell’s Kitchen, Editorial, Features, Gossip, News, Renewals,
It’s April, and that can only mean one thing: winter seasons are winding down so that new summer shows can blaze their way onto TV screens. But this year’s shows might not have enough spark to create a blaze…or even much warmth. This year’s summer shows from most major networks and cable channels center around new reality plots, as the summer season is always rife with new reality. Looking forward to summer renewals like Hell’s Kitchen, The Simple Life, and Kyle XY? Most summer favorites will be back for another run at big ratings, including Ghost Hunters (Sci-Fi Network), The Closer (TNT), and America’s Got Talent (NBC). But most networks are banking on brand-new shows to grab viewer attention, not old favorites. What’s fresh, new, and exciting about the summer season this year? If intense drama and reality melodrama appeal to you, then you’re all set for some great TV watching. Check out early previews on some of summer’s new, highly hyped, series.
