Barker’s Last Sign-Off
Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Daytime, Games, Reality, CBS, Talent, Ratings, Rumors,
Well, it’s over. This week, Bob Barker taped his very last episode of the CBS daytime hit The Price is Right. The bittersweet final episode will air on June 15, the last chance for fans to view Barker in all his hosting glory. Five decades, and no more daytime TV for Bob Barker. For the last thirty-five years, Barker has been a mainstay of both CBS and The Price is Right. But, the original Price didn’t start out with either Barker or the strength of CBS behind it. The show originally ran for eleven years (1956 to 1965) on NBC and ABC and was hosted by longtime TV personality Bob Cullen. It wasn’t until September 1972 that Price premiered on CBS, this time with Barker at the helm. Barker was already well-known on TV at the time as the host of popular game show Truth or Consequences (which gained such a big following, a town in New Mexico is named after it). The show ran from 1956 to 1975, but Barker found truly lasting fame with his coveted Price is Right gig. For as long as the show has been on CBS (and it’s the second-longest running game show in television history, being beat out by a Spanish show that does not run in the States), Bob Barker has been there. Until, of course, June 15, when TV viewing audiences will witness Barker’s last sign off.

The Top 5 ‘Price is Right’ Games
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Daytime, Games, CBS, Features,
As most of you know, Bob Barker has just officially retired as host of The Price is Right. After 35 years, today was his last day of taping.
Having lived through the 80’s, I remember a time when I privately wanted to be on any game show. From Scrabble to Password, I loved them all. Unfortunately, game show appearances (like the ones on GSN today) don’t carry the same cachet they once did….but I still think of those dreams fondly. (And for the record, I would totally suck at Jeopardy...and Wheel of Fortune is just too blah for me).
While I didn’t get many chances to watch Price during recent years, I still know which games I wished I’d played. For those of you who expecting me to mention Plinko—you’re wrong. I never really liked those games of chance:
5) Range Game: The board always reminded me of a thermometer with its dashes and red ‘screen’. The concept was very easy but I always seemed to get a thrill when someone guessed a price just outside the guessed ‘range’.
4) Punch-A-Bunch: Okay, so this would be a considered a game of chance. But I like punching people…and things…especially when I could earn money for doing it.
3) Safe Crackers: One of the fanciest sets to come off that show! I so wanted to crack that combination so that I could roll in the fantasized dough waiting for me on the other side.
2) Cliff Hangers: Weirdly enough, I was always a bit scared that the mountain climber would fall off the mountain. I didn’t like to seeing him plunge to his death. But the yodeling proved to be the best—and most nervewracking—supporting music ever.
1) Clock Game: Why did I love this game? Because it took smarts and more importantly…logic. It always angered me when someone took too long to guess the right price. When Bob said ‘higher’, you simply needed to guess higher. When he said ‘lower’, you went lower. And you did it fast. Why some people could never grasp that concept—or give a good variety of guesses—I will never know.
To freshen up on your own memories—or to simply see which games I chose—click on the link below! In the meantime, schedule a date for Bob’s farewell when his last show airs on June 15th.

Bob’s Last Spectacular
Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Daytime, Games, Prime Time, Reality, CBS, Gossip,
Bob Barker’s career has been long and illustrious. From early Truth or Consequences days to daytime immortality with the Price is Right, Bob Barker has been on television for half a century. Tonight marks his final appearance on the prime time edition of his popular game show, the Price is Right Million Dollar Spectacular. It airs tonight on CBS at 8pm ET, and gives fans one last chance to see Bob before his big summer send-off. The Spectacular will be followed on Thursday night by a CBS tribute celebrating Bob Barker’s life in front of the camera.
Born December 12, 1923, Bob Barker has won seventeen Emmys since he began his tenure on the Price is Right in 1972. The CBS show is the longest-running daytime game show in the history of television. After many years of putting, playing, and watching the wheel spin, Bob is going to give his hosting duties a rest and enjoy retirement. His last episode of the Price is Right is set to air June 15, 2007. Ever since Barker’s announcement, speculation has been hot and heavy as to who will fill his sizeable hosting shoes.

Charla and Mirna: They Just Can’t Win, Can They?
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Games, Reality, CBS, Amazing Race, The, Editorial, Features,
This is the chorus that I and many other Amazing Race fans have been singing this week ever since Charla & Mirna made their way into the finals of the Race, knocking off fan-favorites Danny and Oswald, who, let’s face it, have run a few pretty bad last legs. Still, it wasn’t supposed to be like this. There were supposed to be super-accomplished teams that would make sure that the finale would be stocked with strong competitors. But instead, the Race producers chose people like Dave & Mary, who couldn’t finish a leg of the race without the help of, like, six other teams, and ONLY ONE WINNING TEAM, the winners who had to beg people on the streets of Miami for money so they could barely pay a cab driver to get them to the finish line.
So this is what it’s come to: Charla and Mirna with a 1 in 3 shot to win a million dollars. My fear isn’t just that they’ll win, but that the producers of the Race will think that this is what all of the fans of the show will want. That this will be a glorious conclusion to a so-so season. Here’s the thing, though: from my sample size of about two dozen of my friends and family who watch the Race, exactly ZERO PEOPLE WANT CHARLA AND MIRNA TO WIN. We will hate it if they win; we will riot. Some of us have even threatened not to watch the show ever again (that would be the some of us who are married to the some of me).

Three in Line for “Price is Right”
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Games, Reality, Cable, CBS, Syndication,
The hunt for the next Bob Barker is underway, with three finalists vying for the coveted Price is Right hosting gig. Wouldn’t it be funny if one of the choices were Sanjaya Malakar? I kid. Really though, the three contenders are Mark Steines from Entertainment Tonight, Todd Newton of E!, and uber-tan guy George Hamilton. Other reports are saying that John O’Hurley, of Dancing with the Stars, is also in the running. The search has been going on for quite some time, but the buzz is that CBS will announce the new host in mid-May. Bob Barker is taping his last Price Is Right show in June, after 35 years on the job. It makes me wonder if they’ll do a whole overhaul on the show, with new games and sets. Personally, I think the cheesy stuff should continue because that’s what made Price is Right such a game show institution. I mean, can you imagine this show without Plinko?

Great American Dream Gets Canned
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Games, Prime Time, Reality, ABC, Cancellations, Ratings,
Well, that was fast. The Great American Dream Vote started on Tuesday, aired again Wednesday, and got the axe on Thursday. ABC is wasting no time on this waste of TV time, pulling the show from the schedule immediately and putting it “on hiatus.” We all know that’s the kiss of death. Sad when not even the “great” Donny Osmond can keep a crummy show afloat. Well, I say great loosely, but there are plenty of Osmond fans out there. If you were among the droves of viewers repelled by the show, the concept was that the audience would vote to make someone’s dream come true. Ratings were an absolute disaster, which is remarkable for a show that could have held on to the 18 million viewers from the Dancing with the Stars lead-in. Nope, just 5.9 million tuned in on Tuesday, and on Wednesday, that dropped to 4.56 million. Great American Dream—we hardly knew ya.

This one is puzzling—a possible reunion of the 70s singing group The Osmonds. For some reason, it doesn’t seem like there would be a big demand to reunite Donny and his five brothers, but hey, stranger things have had people tuning in. Donny sang with his brothers during the 70s, then did a little solo work—and now has his 55th album, “Love Songs of the 70s,” on the British charts. Fear not, it will be released soon in America. He also had that variety show with sister Marie (remember “I’m a little bit country, I’m a little bit rock n’ roll”? No?). “The family has been talking,” Osmond said. “I haven’t done a show with my brothers for 25 years or so. We are talking about doing a TV special, and maybe something with Marie, but nothing is locked in yet.” So, it’s not a done deal, but they’re talking. For now, you’ll have to get your dose of Donny when he begins hosting duties for The Great American Dream Vote, beginning on March 27th.

Who knew Jeopardy could be so exciting, right? Three contestants all finished with the exact same dollar amount after the Final Jeopardy question on Friday’s show—$16,000. The tie marks a first for the long-running game show, and Alex Trebek’s glee over the event could barely be contained. The category was “Women of the 1930s” and all three contestants answered Bonnie Parker. “We’ve had a lot of crazy things happen on Jeopardy! but in 23 years I’ve never seen anything like this before,” Trebek said. To prove just how crazy this occurrence is, Jeopardy contacted a mathematician and discovered that the chances of a three-way tie is one in 25 million. Since all three men tied, they were all announced as winners and competed again on the show, which will air today.

‘5th Grader’ Game Show a Huge Ratings Hit
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Games, Music, Prime Time, Reality, FOX, American Idol, Ratings,
Apparently lots of people tuned in to find out if they are indeed smarter than a fifth grader. Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?, hosted by Jeff Foxworthy and created by Mark Burnett, proved the silly concept can translate into superb ratings. It did so well, in fact, that it was the highest-rated series premiere on any network in nine years. That’s kind of crazy, if you think about it, especially for a game show. I suppose it doesn’t hurt to have uber-popular American Idol as your lead-in either. Idol has been bringing consistently high numbers and you’ve got to think that a majority of them will stick around for the next show. Overall Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? grabbed 26.6 million viewers. Idol led the night with 30.4 million viewers. Interestingly, it bested the previous winner for best series premiere—Jesse on NBC, which debuted in 1998. Remember that show? Nah, me neither.

Switcheroo for ‘Deal’ and ‘Crossing Jordan’
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Drama, Games, Music, Prime Time, Reality, FOX, NBC, American Idol, Apprentice, The - Donald, Medium, Ratings,
Here’s one of those things that totally confuses viewers—moving a show to another day and time. The latest is the switch in days between Deal or No Deal and Crossing Jordan. So, the Wednesday night edition of Deal will move to Sundays, and Crossing Jordan will get the bump to Wednesdays at 9 p.m. The change will make Sundays a bit different, with Grease: You’re the One That I Want at 8:00, Deal or No Deal at 9:00, and The Apprentice at 10:00. Whether or not the move will increase ratings, we’ll just have to see. Jordan will now be in good company with the other Wednesday dramas: Friday Night Lights and Medium. Of course, that also puts Jordan in competition with American Idol, which is currently the ratings king.
