My Top Five: Ugly (Yet Funny) Men
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Comedy, Games, Prime Time, CBS, NBC, Scrubs,
Last night I stumbled upon an episode of the Power of Ten and found myself sucked in by the thought-provoking topics. For those who have not seen the CBS game show yet, the concept is fairly simple. The contestants have to guess (within a certain range) how a sampling of Americans answered a particular question. For example: “What percentage of Americans think Elvis is still really alive?”
Okay, I actually made that last example up. But one real question from last night had me thinking: “What percentage of women said that they would date an ugly guy because they found him funny?” (Or something like that). Unfortunately, I don’t remember the actual answer because my mind started trailing off. I quietly wondered:
‘Which ‘ugly’ actors could I see dating simply because they made me laugh?’

Joey Fatone Takes on the Red Carpet
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Award Shows, Games, Music, Cable, Cable/Satellite,
Take that, Justin Timberlake! Well, sort of… Joey Fatone, former boy-bander from NSync, has just been tapped to host the red carpet events for TV Guide Network with former Dancing with the Stars Alum, Lisa Rinna. Fatone has made a major comeback since his appearance on Dancing with the Stars, most recently taking on hosting duties for The Singing Bee. While he hasn’t exactly been standing on the unemployment line since he left his boy band days behind—he was seen in the musical Rent, for one thing—his sudden emergence back into the mainstream is a big deal. He starts his red carpet coverage at the Emmys on September 16th and will continue his red carpet reporting through 2008. Of course, this means Rinna and Fatone take over for Joan and Melissa Rivers—and quite honestly, I don’t care who replaces the Rivers, but I’m so glad to see them gone! Fatone remarked, “I am looking forward to making the Red Carpet experience entertaining, spontaneous, and most of all fun—not only for those walking the Red Carpet, but also for the fans watching at home.”

Foxworthy Back for Another FOX Season
Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Games, Prime Time, Reality, FOX, Renewals,
Jeff Foxworthy, famously rednecked comedian, will return to FOX for new episodes of Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader beginning August 30. Though some of the first-season kids were actors, including Back to You’s Laura Marano, Foxworthy says none of the kids were coached for questions. For the upcoming second season, all the kids will be non-actors. On the show, each question comes directly from a school textbook, though the new season will feature A Classroom Club question that lets every day kids submit their own quiz items. When a child’s question is used, the show will donate a computer lab to the kid’s school.

Drew Carey To Host The Price is Right
Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Daytime, Games, Reality, CBS, Talent, News,
Drew Carey is officially the new host of the Price is Right, the must-coveted gig vacated earlier this summer by Bob Barker. Carey announced his new role to David Letterman during Monday’s Late Show taping. Carey will also be hosting another CBS game show next month, the Power of 10. Promotional advertisements for the show have been running most of the summer. Carey will begin on Power of 10 August 7, though it has not yet been announced when he will start on Price. Rosie O’Donnell’s name was attached to Price earlier, but the comedienne refused the job when she found she’d have to move to L.A. It’s Drew Carey, former ABC fixture, for sure this time, leaving only one question to linger: will he be able to fill Barker’s sizable shoes and hold that famous skinny mike?

Call me crazy, but I don’t know what all the “buzz” about The Singing Bee is. Get it? Buzz? Lame, right? Well, almost as lame as my joke, is the actual show, which I caught about half of last night. It’s mediocre at best and not even happy-go-lucky N’ Sync-er Joey Fatone can inject excitement into it. Still, I suppose it beats that Bingo show that was on awhile ago. So lame was that, the name completely escapes me. The Singing Bee, on NBC, is a game show that combines karaoke and Name That Tune as contestants compete for the grand money prize. The first episode drew 13 million people, so I guess it’s not all bad. Then again, with the summer slim pickins, what else is there to watch? Oh, and the dancing Honey Bees may be an extra draw, but I’m not seein’ it. Over on Fox, the similarly themed game show Don’t Forget the Lyrics (hosted by Wayne Brady) didn’t fare quite so well in ratings, earning 8.4 million viewers. Will either of these shows have any longevity beyond the summer months? And will I cave like a deck of cards and start watching Singing Bee because there’s nothing better to watch? Given my glimpse at it last night, not likely… although those uber-peppy contestants are a hoot to watch.

An Interview with “Without Prejudice” Host Dr. Robi Ludwig
Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Games, Prime Time, Reality, Cable, Features,
Famed psychotherapist Dr. Robi Ludwig is part host, part counselor, and part mediator in her role on GSN’s Without Prejudice, an intriguing new show I had the opportunity to watch recently. The show is scheduled to premiere on GSN this Tuesday at 9pm ET, and it’s an event you won’t want to miss.. In this interesting twist on the standard reality TV show format, five strangers will compete for the chance to win $25,000. They will be judged, on looks and personality alone, by a panel of five judges – also strangers. Round by round, more information is revealed about each of the contestants, as they are slowly whittled down to only two. Dr. Ludwig guides the footage, and the discussion that results among the judges, often listening quietly until her expertise is needed. Without Prejudice explores the political topics that cause debate among world leaders and legislatures today, and asks a question that many wouldn’t dare: can we judge each other, Without Prejudice? Judges are treated to camera interviews of each contestant, as well as some hidden camera footage that sheds new light on those vying for the $25,000 prize. After watching the compelling first episode, I got the chance to speak with Dr. Ludwig via phone for a one-on-one interview.

There are a lot of different game shows out there, which creates a lot of game show winners. But some of these winning stars blaze brighter – and longer – than others. GSN’s Grand Slam will pit these winners together in a battle royale of wits, to see which big winner is the true champion above all others. Hosted by Dennis Miller and Amanda Byram (the Swan), Grand Slam will pit past winners against each other in a head-to-head contest that will determine once and for all which winner boasts the most brain power. Grand Slam contestants will include Jeopardy winners Ken Jennings and Brad Rutter, and Millionaire winners Kenvin Olmstead and John Carpenter, to name a few.

Test Trivia Knowledge with VH1
Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Games, Prime Time, Reality, Cable, Renewals,
VH1 is bringing back the World Series of Pop Culture for a second season this summer, promising more obscure trivia, more teams of three, and more money to give away. Though VH1 has been known for coming up with some real bombs in the past (what exactly is the deal with Charm School?), the World Series of Pop Culture last year offered a bevy of interesting trivia and quite a few teams that were almost impossible to root for. Will this year’s competitors hold more appeal?

Roger Lodge to Host GSN’s Camouflage
Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Games, Prime Time, Cable, News,
The Game Show Network is bringing another original game show to cable this summer with Camouflage, a hidden word game show that’s a mixture of trivia and word puzzles. GSN has had mixed success with their original programming, enjoying hits like Lingo and Chain Reaction, while suffering through failures like Starface and That’s the Question. Now, Roger Lodge will try his hosting hand on the network for games.
Lodge is recognizable from his hosting duties on Blind Date, though he’s also hosted a live stage version of The Price is Right in Atlantic City and Trivial Pursuit on ESPN. After seven years, Lodge’s Blind Date duties are over, making him ripe to join other hosts who have tried their hands at GSN games. Camouflage is scheduled to premiere July 2 at 7:30pm.

Rosie Taking on Price is Right?
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Daytime, Games, CBS, Gossip, Rumors,
Well, it’s been rumored that Rosie O’Donnell may take over for Bob Barker on The Price is Right, but Bob himself confirmed during Friday’s Daytime Emmy awards that a meeting is in the works. Bob said, “I believe they’re going to have a meeting with Rosie. She knows the show. There’s no doubt in my mind she could do the show.” Wow, what about the other Price hopefuls, Todd Newton, George Hamilton and Mark Steines? The search landed these three in the finals, but seems CBS is dragging its heels and O’Donnell is coming in as a late entry. Question is, will she win the coveted game show hosting gig? Given her loud mouth and strong views (no pun intended for The View, but hey, it works), you’d think she wouldn’t be a very popular choice. Then again, what better job to keep her quiet than a game show? She has to stick to the job at hand, with no opportunity for political discussions or room to view her opinions. It may just be the perfect job for her. Will viewers tune in? Given Barker’s departure, it seems that any replacement is going to take some getting used to. Stay tuned to see how Rosie’s “meeting” went. Given that Bob’s last show just aired, CBS had better get things in gear and find a new host.
