On Gear Live: Apple’s HUGE Siri Apple Intelligence Fumble w/ John Gruber - Geared Up 205

Description American Idol and scandal have been friends for a long time. The second season of the show alone was rife with media stories, from Studdard’s law suits to Abdul’s affair, to one contestant’s cups that ranneth over. Plenty of Idol fans still remember the day Frenchie Davis was unceremoniously booted from the show because of topless photos. After leaving reality TV, Frenchie went on to find Broadway success. But she hasn’t forgotten her brush with TV fame and shame.

A recent article from the Associated Press brought Frenchie back into the television limelight, when the Broadway star stated that she would like to receive a public apology from American Idol. But that’s not all she wants, according to the article. Frenchie stated that she was humiliated by the show, and thinks that an apology would be “a great start.” The reason all of this is surfacing again, four years later? Her name is Antonella Barba, and despite performances that have been routinely called “pitchy” and photos some might think of as “porn,” she keeps hanging around the Idol contestant pool.

Lane Garrison Well, here’s one actor that’s certain to have an E! Boulevard of Broken Dreams special. Lane Garrison, who had a glimpse of the spotlight when he played Tweener on Prison Break, has been charged with manslaughter, driving under the influence, and providing alcohol to a minor. In this case, life is imitating art, since Garrison has already played the make-believe role of inmate. Garrison was involved in a car crash that injured two 15-year-old girls and killed a 17-year-old boy in December. Today, Garrison was charged with vehicular manslaughter. If convicted, Garrison could have over six years of prison time ahead of him. According to his lawyer, Garrison was invited to a party by the teenagers and crashed his car into a tree on the way to there. His blood-alcohol level was more than twice the legal limit for California.

Kellie Pickler If you caught Kellie Pickler on Thursday night’s American Idol results show, you may have noticed that she looked a little more va-va-va-voom in the breast department. Me, I just thought she was wearing a really tight dress that showed off her ... ahem… assets. After her appearance, the web was swirling with rumors that the singer had gotten breast implants. Quick, someone call Tyra Banks. Season 5 Idol contestant Katharine McPhee just went on Banks’ show to declare that she’s all-natural. Pickler is remaining mum for now.

Many thought that Ryan Seacrest’s question to Pickler that night was a nudge-nudge moment: “Have you spent your money on anything since you left us?” he asked. You could hear the comment flying over her head as she giddily commented on her shoes. Access Hollywood wasn’t quite as subtle when they ran a segment called “Pickler’s New Pair?” Ugh. Anyhoo, Pickler is giving the “no comment” comment when it comes to matters of her enhanced cleavage.

Jeff Foxworthy Apparently lots of people tuned in to find out if they are indeed smarter than a fifth grader. Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?, hosted by Jeff Foxworthy and created by Mark Burnett, proved the silly concept can translate into superb ratings. It did so well, in fact, that it was the highest-rated series premiere on any network in nine years. That’s kind of crazy, if you think about it, especially for a game show. I suppose it doesn’t hurt to have uber-popular American Idol as your lead-in either. Idol has been bringing consistently high numbers and you’ve got to think that a majority of them will stick around for the next show. Overall Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? grabbed 26.6 million viewers. Idol led the night with 30.4 million viewers. Interestingly, it bested the previous winner for best series premiere—Jesse on NBC, which debuted in 1998. Remember that show? Nah, me neither.

Antonella BarbaBeautiful, 20-year-old Antonella Barba got camera attention early as one of the two best friends auditioning for American Idol together. Both bombshells drew questions and comments from Simon Cowell (“I bet you two are very popular”) and managed to snag golden tickets to Hollywood. While Barba’s best friend half didn’t make it past Group Night, Antonella managed to survive through Hollywood week and find her way to the big Idol stage. Almost immediately thereafter, questionable photos began to surface of a scantily clad Barba (hem, allegedly of Barba) on the Internet. Antonella hails from Point Pleasant, NJ, a town that carries its own notoriety already – Point Pleasant is the home of the Mothman. There’s no word yet from American Idol execs on whether or not Antonella Barba will be asked to leave the competition, though Playboy founder Hugh Heffner did comment that he might ask her to pose in his famous magazine, when all her Idol business is said and done. Judging by the way Barba sings, he might not have to wait too long.

Simon Cowell If you’re an Internet surfer, chances are you have seen some mention of the American Idol contestant’s scandalous pics—or maybe you’ve even seen them. Racy photos of Antonella Barba have been circulating online, and until now Idol producers have not made a comment about her status in the competition. Producer Nigel Lythgoe is now saying that she will not be disqualified from the show, saying it will be up to voters to determine her fate. On Inside Edition, he said, “It won’t affect anything, Antonella is about her looks and her talent and that’s the only thing that will affect her journey on American Idol.” The other players on American Idol—Ryan, Randy and Simon—are supporting the singer:

  • Simon: “[The photos should] not affect her standing on the show, and if the public wants to keep her in, they’ll keep her in.”
  • Randy: “Nobody’s clean in the entertainment business. “There are definitely some moral things that go on with this show.”
  • Ryan: “If American Idol is a true representation of American youth, we’re going to find imperfections. And it’s OK to be imperfect.”

Jeff FoxworthyLeave it to FOX to ask the question no other network dares: Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? Most adults would say yes, of course. In a new big-budget game show (a deviation for FOX, a network that relies largely upon animated series, intense dramas, and reality TV) college grads will be pit against a class of five fifth graders in an effort to test their general knowledge smarts. There’s only one catch: all of the questions range from first to fifth grade class teachings. The show will run every night this week after FOX’s mega-hit American Idol, in an effort to boost up ratings for the fledging program. Cute little nine, ten, and eleven-year olds, a famous redneck for a host (Jeff Foxworthy), and plenty of money to throw around (the prize for answering only eleven questions? One million dollars) – FOX is banking on a hit. Think you’ve got what it takes to beat fifth graders at school trivia? Then you probably aren’t watching the show.

American Idol When the sixth season of American Idol began, it seemed the males were going to outshine the ladies hands down. They came, they sang, they conquered. Group night impressed audiences, and surprise contenders on the male side seemed ready to prove that they had definitely earned their honor to compete. And then…Hollywood round ended, and it was time to perform. One by one, the men filled the stage. One by one, Simon Cowell shot them down. Most of the males didn’t seem at all ready for the big stage, the big crowd, and the big TV cameras. Even Paula had trouble finding positive remarks to make -–a rare enough occasion for American Idol. The very next night, the female contestants blew judges (and audiences) away with powerful pipes.

American Idol losing ratings? America’s most-watched reality show may be losing some of its appeal – or, at the very least, some of its viewers. Last year’s season of American Idol drew record numbers, some nights bringing in thirty million viewers or more. This year…well, the ratings are a little lower. Idol is still definitely on top even with a paltry seventeen million viewers, but the FOX hit is just barely the most popular show. Coming in at a too-close second is , the runaway CBS hit that has everyone talking and watching. Though American Idol and Grey’s Anatomy air at different times, the scripted drama is slowly overtaking the King of reality shows. Right now, fans can still watch both – but will Grey’s go for a more direct competition next season? And if they do…will Idol still continue to win the ratings war?

Academy AwardJennifer Hudson struggled to gain notice and popularity for the first several episodes of American Idol 3. Today, she is the new hot actress in Hollywood. How did she make this incredible transformation? The young star landed the role of Effie White in 2005 (beating out former Idol Fantasia Barrino) in the movie Dreamgirls, an adaptation of the Broadway play. Hudson’s big voice and on-screen energy helped her finally gain fan approval (for which she battled on AI) and nationwide recognition in the form of the Academy Awards. It’s an honor just to be nominated – but to win is a huge deal. Though Hudson barely gained her seventh-place American Idol finish (she was brought in on a wildcard round), she won first place in the Oscar race. Hudson finally found the singing style that suits her best – and it shows.
