On Gear Live: Apple’s HUGE Siri Apple Intelligence Fumble w/ John Gruber - Geared Up 205

Steven Spielbergreality TV success, FOX is taking their viewers On the Lot right after everyone tunes in to watch the two remaining American Idols belt out tunes before a live audience. The last time FOX debuted a brand-new show behind Idol, Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader, the game show became an overnight success. Will the same ploy work with On The Lot, a reality competition that features would-be filmmakers? If you’ve already got the biggest audience of reality watchers in the palm of your hand, why not keep them there, right?

Twelve thousand video submissions flooded TheLot.com, each one made by an aspiring filmmaker hoping to break into one of the toughest industries around: film entertainment. Of these submissions, fifty have been chosen to go head-to-head On The Lot. The show, created by well-known TV producer Mark Burnett, famous film director Steven Spielberg, and DreamWorks Television studios, will begin with two “audition rounds” on Tuesday, May 22 (right after Idol) and Thursday, May 24 at 9:30 ET. The semi-finalists will get to visit a Hollywood set (though more than half of the submissions received for On The Lot came from LA anyway) and be sent off “Hollywood Boot Camp” that will entail rough-and-tumble movie making at its finest.

Jordin Sparks and Blake Lewis, youngest contestant ever to gain the title American Idol, is the newly-named winner of season 6. The Arizona native sang, danced, and smiled her way through last night’s two-hour season finale spectacular, a stage show filled with live acts that included a simulcast of Gwen Stefani on her current tour. The event, as always, was filled with somewhat tongue-in-cheek awards that were doled out to would-be contestants seen in the very early weeks of this season. Coupled with the big-name performers on stage (including Aerosmith’s Joe Perry, Smokey Robinson, Gladys Knight, Green Day and Bette Midler, not to mention the bevy of returning Idols that also filled the stage), the show was (as always) a spectacular success. It all culminated in a Beatles-based musical montage that featured past Idol winners Carrie Underwood, Kelly Clarkson, Reuben Studdard, and Taylor Hicks, performances that were followed immediately by the long-anticipated results. After more than seventy million votes (an astronomical amount, considering voter turnout in the last two major elections), Jordin was named this year’s one and only Idol.

Yes, even more thoughts I’ve had about TV for the past few days, laid out for you in easy-to-read paragraph format.

MOLLY SHANNON ANNOYS & DELIGHTS came back with a new episode recently starring Molly Shannon (she’s ostensibly there to promote her movie “Year of the Dog,” but I really think SNL looks for any excuse to have it’s former cast members return) and it was … pretty much what I thought it was going to be.  I used to remark when Ms. Shannon was on the show that she didn’t have many characters, just the same character in different outfits and wigs.  That character comes out, goes through her catch phrases and/or crazy falls, and then the sketch is over.  That’s Mary Katharine Gallagher, that’s Sally O’Malley (the I’m 50! Lady), that’s Ann Miller (from “Leg Up”).

And she did those first two characters when she hosted and it was annoying and really not funny.  The laughter always felt more like a reflex from the audience than an actual “this is funny” laugh.

But what Molly Shannon also can do (and I heard Mike White, the writer/director of “Year of the Dog,” mention this in an interview) is be really funny when she’s quiet and not so over-the-top.  Like the Delicious Dish sketch (aka Schwetty Balls) and her typical 80’s mulleted stand-up comedienne.

She did the stand-up comedienne character on Weekend Update and that was great, and she played a quieter part in a very good presidential debate sketch.  So, it was a mixed bag: nothing great, but nothing too awful.

JordinBlakeThis proud Seattleite must first take an admittedly selfish moment to stick her tongue out at Randy, Simon and Paula.  For all the nasty comments they made about our city (even when many of the auditioners weren’t even from here)—knowing that both finalists came from the Seattle lot is worth bragging about.  So there!  Thank you for letting me vent…

It was a battle of style (Blake) vs. skill (Jordin) tonight…and once again, each contestant had to perform three songs:  something old (a season favorite), something new, something borrowed (a song written by the winners of the songwriting contest) but nothing blue.  Having won the coin toss, Blake decided to go first.  Was he smart to kick-off the show—or should he have chosen to end it?  Read on!

Paula Abdul  American Idol’s dewy-eyed judge, morale coach, and former songstress can add at least one more credential to her resume: accident survivor. Paula Abdul discovered just how dangerous house pets can be this week, even when enjoying a relaxing day at home. Abdul was walking around her pad and trying to avoid stepping on Tulip, her pet Chihuahua, when she fell (apparently, on her face). The most inane Idol judge of them all suffered a broken nose from the incident, but reports say she is recovering nicely. The nose shouldn’t be enough to keep Paula away from her sideline position by the Idol stage this week, however. Paula, along with Simon and Randy, will judge the final performances by the two remaining American Idol competitors, then watch as only one is crowned the sixth American Idol of the land. Everything should be fine as long as there are no tiny dogs in sight…or, underfoot.

Kiefer Sutherland Fear not, loyal 24 fans, the Emmy-winning show will be around for a couple more seasons. In the land of 24, however, that’s really only two days. 24 has been a ratings winner for Fox for the past six seasons (somehow I can’t believe it’s been on that long) and this season’s finale will air May 21st. Star Kiefer Sutherland has a contract through 2008-09, when the series is expected to wrap. So, at least fans can be assured that Jack Bauer will ride out the series until the very end. What’s in store for season number seven? Well, producers say that some big changes will be in the works—only you’ll have to tune in to find out. Or read recaps, I suppose.

Rashida JonesGet ready for the finale of The Office tonight—strangely enough, they filmed four separate endings of the finale and now it’s a little more clear why. As you may recall from last week’s episode, Tim, Michael and Karen were all hopefuls for a big job at corporate. Rashida Jones, who plays Karen, just got word this morning that her Fox pilot has been picked up. Putting two and two together, it seems likely that Karen will get the corporate job over Michael and Jim, so that she can be written off the show. Her new comedy, The Rules for Starting Over also stars Craig Bierko and is the brainchild of the Farrelly brothers. So long Karen, hello Pam/Jim sexual tension. And speaking of Pam… sweetie Jenna Fischer slipped and fell down a staircase on Monday and got pretty banged up. She’s fractured her back in four places, with a recovery time of four to six weeks. Doesn’t sound like a very fun summer for Fischer.

AI Final 3No sleep for the remaining weary tonight.  We finally made it to the semi-finals, so it was three-for-three this evening:  three songs for each of the final three contestants.

One song was chosen by a judge, another by the producers and the final tune was up to the singer’s discretion.  Who brought their game faces tonight and who cracked under the increasing pressure?  Read on!

Randy JacksonIt was only a matter of time before American Idol‘s Randy Jackson jumped on the reality show bandwagon. After all, Simon Cowell and Paula Abdul are both in the reality programming zone, why not Jackson? His new show, World Moves, will feature dance teams competing for an international touring contract. NBC has already picked up the series, to air in 2007/2008. Not quite the same as So You Think You Can Dance, given the team competition, but still a very familiar reality premise. Since Jackson doesn’t have dancing expertise, he’ll team up with the World Hip Hop Championship. Auditions should be underway soon, with teams of five to seven dancers around the world showing their moves. Those that make the cut, go to Los Angeles to dance off for the finals. Yada, yada, yada, viewers vote and one team is axed each week until the final team is left standing. Be on the lookout for this series sometime in late fall.

American Idol Judges Randy, Paula, and Simon Just when viewers thought that Wednesday night results shows couldn’t get any more exciting, FOX’s American Idol came up with another shocker: the spinoff. No, it’s not another So You Think You Can Dance – this time, it’s about bands. Idol has found lots of undiscovered singers over the years, many of whom are now enjoying highly successful careers. When Ryan Seacrest announced FOX’s intent to produce an Idol-esque battle of the bands, the news was actually big enough to trump even a startling elimination: LaKisha Jones. Today’s speculation is not on who will win Idol, it’s what this new show will be like. And…when is it going to be on the air?
