Showtime Cancels Huff

After two low-rated but critically acclaimed seasons, Showtime has pulled the plug on its drama Huff, according to a report in Variety yesterday. The cast of the show, that focuses on a psychiatrist played by Hank Azaria and his family, was apparently notified earlier in the week. The show was noted for a huge Emmy campaign after its first low-rated season, resulting in an Emmy for Blythe Danner. A second season only aired, however, because Showtime exec Robert Greenblatt had been so impressed by the show that he green-lit a second season before the first even aired. The second season still failed to increase its numbers, so the season finale on Sunday night will also be its series finale. Huff also stars Oliver Platt, and Season One is available on DVD.

Rescue Me’s Disturbing Sex Scene

Posted by Auburn Scallon Categories: Drama, Cable, Editorial, Gossip,
Okay, so I’ve previously accepted that Rescue Me has succumbed to soap opera antics in order to maintain ratings this season. They’re no longer a gritty real-life fire fighter drama. They took things a step too far this week, and I’m not referring to the homosexual blow jobs (I actually applaud them for taking on that story line). Tommy Gavin, after a ridiculous amount of emotional trauma in his life, goes to discuss his divorce settlement with his ex-wife, and in the heat of the moment, throws her down on the couch to prove his manhood. She struggles, fights back, and after accepting that she is currently being raped, sits back, enjoys it and orgasms? What kind of message is this sending?! It’s one thing to portray sex with an ex, but this was a huge step backward in our attitudes about domestic violence. Did this bother anyone else? Let me know your thoughts…

New Cast Members Appear on Fox’s Vanished
Posted by Eric Chaloux Categories: Drama, Prime Time, FOX, Talent, News,
Penelope Ann Miller and Esai Morales are the two latest members to sign on for Fox’s new drama Vanished. It’s a show based around the strange circumstances surrounding the disappearance of the wife of a prominent Senator and the search for her whereabouts. Miller (Carlito’s Way) will play the Senator’s first wife, while Morales of NYPD Blue fame will keep his badge and play the leader of the FBI team that will head up the case. You’ll also find Joanne Kelly, John Allen Nelson, Gale Harold and Ming-Na on the cast of Vanished. If you like CSI: Crime Scene Investigation you’ll probably like Vanished because it’s created by the same man Josh Berman. Fox plans to air Vanished Monday nights at 9 PM ET this fall.

Cable Scrambling To Close In On TNT’s The Closer
Posted by Eric Chaloux Categories: Drama, Cable, TNT-HD, Nip/Tuck, The Sopranos, News, Ratings,
The Closer, starring Kyra Sedgwick, has made a big splash kicking off the summer television season. First, its second-season premiere was commercial free. Second, it was a good show. And third, it blew away the competition with 8.3 million viewers, the most-watched scripted series ever on basic cable. Historically, “the only thing that’s owned by broadcast is scripted series,” says TBS and TNT’s chief operating officer Steve Koonin to USA Today. “Now, with The Closer, Nip/Tuck and Monk, that’s not true anymore.” Just to put into perspective just how many viewers watch The Closer try this on for size: the show had an audience that matched HBO’s biggest series, The Sopranos.
Joining TNT, USA, and FX in the scripted game are Spike!, ABC Family, E! and TBS. All four have several scripted dramas shows that could hit your TV as early as this fall.

Desperate Housewife

It isn’t a secret to
fans that the mothers of Wisteria Lane have such dramatic struggles when it comes to raising their kids. From Bree’s traumatic experiences with her son Andrew, to Lynette’s constant failed attempts to control her three boys, these “housewives” are constantly battling to obtain the perfect home and family.
When it comes to Bree, many have found it disheartening to see her kids act so inconsiderately. Bree has been the ultimate Wisteria Lane homemaker who presents zero competition for any neighbor working towards a picture-perfect suburban life. From gardening to cooking, care and attention to detail are top priorities for this “housewife.” Many Sunday nights I sat by my television wanting to knock some sense in to Andrew, Bree’s rebellious son. His ungrateful attitude really isn’t very attractive. From the result of the season finale, it’s very likely that Danielle, Bree’s daughter will begin to resolve her issues with her mother. Although this might seem uplifting, unlike Danielle, Andrew may never discover the reason behind Bree’s uptight way of life.

Rescue Me began as a poignant, honest look inside the life of a post 9-11 NYC firefighter, but those days have gone up in smoke. Denis Leary’s pet project has officially become a prime-time guilty pleasure soap opera. This season is already full of incestuous romantic relationships- Tommy Gavin’s co-worker is dating his sister, his wife is sleeping with his brother, not to mention his ongoing relationship with his “sister-in-law”- that leave us wondering if there is anyone in New York City that Tommy Gavin is not related to. This season also tackles the seriously overdone storyline of female school teacher seducing young male student (anyone remember the first season of Dawson’s Creek?), but they complicate the situation by adding his uncle as a competitor for attention from the hot young teacher.
The show has already begun introducing big name guest stars. Tommy’s sister is played by the delightfully trashy Tatum O’Neal, and this season adds timeless sex-symbol Susan Sarandon as Franco’s new love interest, and upcoming appearances by Marisa Tomei. Combined with the millionaire uncle in jail for murder, the best friend left destitute by a scheming porn star, and hints that “probee” will be coming out of the closet this season, and you start to wonder how the boys of Ladder 62 will ever find time to even rescue a cat out of a tree.

Degrassi: High Fidelity - Part Two

Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Drama, Kids, Cable, Degrassi, Features,

Part Two of the season finale starts with Marco and Spinner still working on the upcoming variety show. Marco praises Spin for the touching ceremony with Darcy he had just witnessed the night before, only to be surprised by the news of their breakup. Even more shocking was hearing Spinner admit to kissing someone else that same night. At that precise moment, Paige walks into the room causing Spinner to get all flustered and stumble onto the floor. Marco easily figures out that Paige was Spin’s mystery woman. Cue Darcy (having a Sandy from Grease moment) to walk into the gym and see her ex still lying on the ground. Instead of kicking him while he is down, she actually begs him to take her back—right before she plants a passionate kiss on him in public. She apologizes for being a freak and asks him to consider her.

Yesterday the second season of House started their reruns helping viewers stay connected to the show and draw in the crowd that misses the show during the season. The back-to-back episodes that will be on every Tuesday night really give House-lovers something to get excited over this summer. With the suspenseful ending to the second season it’s no wonder why the Fox network wants to keep viewers up to date. The real question is, what will happen to Dr. House next season? Will the team get to save him just like they saved Dr. Foreman earlier on? There is a lot up in the air right now. Another interesting situation is going to be if Dr. Cuddy asks House to father a child with her. She almost asked another doctor at the hospital, but since she and House have gradually gotten closer maybe he’s her next pick.
Personally, I don’t see House as the fatherly type, and he would need to be more then just a sperm donor because he and Dr. Cuddy work together. Talk about an awkward situation! It kind of makes you wonder what his answer would be if she actually did decide to ask him.

As another school year winds down at Degrassi, the students are forced to face their upcoming summers—and their futures together.
Part One of the season finale begins with Darcy sitting outside The Dot waiting for Spinner. When he finishes his shift, Darcy tells him about her new summer counselor position. She then jokes that Spinner will probably be hanging out with other girls while she is gone. Spinner tries to reassure Darcy of his devotion and kisses her aggressively. She backs off reminding him that they vowed to remain virgins until marriage.
