Rachael RayFor better or for worse, Rachael Ray will debut as talk show host in mid-September. If you’ve never caught her Food Network Shows, she is the self-proclaimed 30-minute meal guru. What started with a cooking show on the Food Network, soon snowballed into other programs on the network, then her own magazine, and now—naturally—her own talk show. I, for one, have a hard time listening to her talk (and I’ve seen the same complaint on bulletin boards), so it’s interesting that she’ll be chatting it up on The Rachael Ray Show. Of course, she does have appeal. For the complaining I do about her goofy little expressions (yummo! or EVOO to abbreviate Extra Virgin Olive Oil), I still watch her cooking shows and my kids absolutely love it. I even have one of her cookbooks and have thumbed through an issue or two of her magazine. The Rachael Ray Show premieres September 18th, with Oprah Winfrey among the guests slated for the first week. Initially surprising that such a high-profile guest as Oprah would appear—then again, the show is co-produced by King World and Winfrey’s Harpo production company.

Ellen DeGeneresThe Ellen DeGeneres Show has been picked up for three more seasons by NBC stations in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and seven other big cities. This takes the show through the 2009-2010 season in these markets. Great news for the dance-aholic whose show earned three Daytime Emmy awards for outstanding talk show, and who herself won two for outstanding talk show host. Jim Paratore, an executive with Warner Bros., said DeGeneres “connects with the upscale, suburban soccer-moms that advertisers pay a premium to reach.” Um,... ok. I think DeGeneres is herself—easy-going and fun-spirited—and that makes her show so relatable to so many people. If that includes upscale suburban soccer-moms, then so be it. I am neither upscale, nor a soccer mom, but I try to catch Ellen’s show whenever I can. I have been a longtime fan of her stand-up, loved her sitcom, and can’t enough of her in Finding Nemo—her transition to daytime talk show host was a natural progression. Dance on, Ellen!

General Hospital In the next few weeks, ABC will softly launch special video podcasts for its daytime viewers.  Fans of General Hospital, All My Children and One Life to Live will have the opportunity to watch weekly promotional features about their favorite soaps.  In addition to storyline teases, the videos will include behind-the-scenes material and interviews with the sudsy actors and actresses.  The podcasts, very similar to those already available for Lost can be accessed via ABC’s website and iTunes.

The View Whether you’ll be watching as interested fan or a catty voyeur, the September 5th edition of The View could be a day to note.  Not only will Rosie O’Donnell be taking over Meredith Viera’s seat that day, but her first guest will be Jessica Simpson.  Rosie’s history with Simpson goes way back to her original talk show days.  Long before Simpson was a household name, Rosie gave her a chance when no one else cared.  Apparently, Jessica’s appearance is her way of paying back.  That, and it gives her an opportunity to plug her upcoming album.

While I really have no interest in either celebrity, the show will definitely be on my Tivo.  Any Joy/Rosie remarks about Star Jones would definitely outweigh any nauseating fawn-over-Jessica moments.  Besides, that’s what the fast-forward is for.

Debbie MatenopoulosIs The View thumbing their nose at Star Jones? The show announced that one of the original co-hosts (and first to be fired), Debbie Matenopoulos, will be guest hosting on July 25th. Debbie was a co-host in 1997, then was fired in 1999. For those following her career –- I for one have tried to avoid her, but somehow she keeps popping up –- she worked on the TV Guide Channel, then Good Day Live, and is now one of three hosts on The Daily 10 on E!. According to The View‘s spokesperson, Debbie has had a “long and wonderful history with The View.” So, apparently, she left on good terms with the show -– or at least good enough to give her one day to make an appearance. The View also confirms that upcoming guest co-hosts will include Shannen Doherty, Robin Givens, and Mo’Nique.

Soap ActorShocking news to the fans of As The World Turns.  Actor Benjamin Hendrickson, 55, was found dead in his New York home over the weekend after an apparent suicide.  The Emmy-award winner played the role of Chief Hal Munson on the soap for over 20 years.  He had reportedly been distraught since the death of his mother three years ago.  Hendrickson’s last air date on CBS will be July 12.

Shannen DohertyAfter the loss of Meredith Viera and the “gain” of losing Star Jones Reynolds, The View will feature a series of guest hosts for the next few weeks.

Some of the upcoming guests will include American Idol finalist Katharine McPhee (July 19), and Carrie Ann Inaba of Dancing with the Stars (July 10). All My Children‘s Susan Lucci appeared yesterday, while singer-actress Brandy (of Moesha and America’s Got Talent) guest hosted today and Wednesday July 5.

Perhaps the most highly anticipated appearance - in my humble opinion only, I’m sure - is that of Shannen Doherty. Doherty, known for her starring roles in (and allegedly bitter departures from) Beverly Hills 90210 and Charmed, is sheduled to guest host July 31 and August 1.

The actress, infamous as being “trouble” due to rumors of stormy relationships with cast members and a shortlived marriage to Ashley Hamilton, is unlikely to be considered as a permanent replacement though. Her new reality show Breaking Up With Shannen Doherty, in which she will help people get out of toxic relationships, premieres August 1 on Oxygen.

The View won’t be making a permanent replacement until after Rosie O’Donnell’s debut on September 5. (The show will be on a month-long hiatus before that starting August 4).

Meanwhile, no one is quite sure what Reynolds is up to. She posted details on how to contact Barbara Walters, the president of ABC Daytime, and an executive producer of The View on her website recently.  However, as of this Thursday the information was down.

Debbie Matenopoulos, who was fired from The View in 1999, appeared on Fox’s Good Day LA last week and had this message for Reynolds: “It’s called ‘show business.’”

It seems like I just talked about this show—oh wait, I did.But there’s more news! Former pop star Brandy may be tapped to replace Star Jones on ABC’s The View. Brandy, the former star of Moesha, is scheduled to replace Star on Wednesday and Friday of next week (Renee Goldsberry is scheduled to guest host the shows airing today and Monday). Some speculate that Brandy may be a permanent replacement.

The View castEarlier reports that Star Jones Reynolds quit The View have now been revealed to be untrue.  According to a report on People‘s website, Jones Reynolds claims she was asked not to return to her next day of work on the popular talk show, and ABC confirms this report.  Apparently, the final split was the product of a period of hostility between Jones Reynolds and the show.  “What you don’t know is that my contract was not renewed for the tenth season,” she states. “I feel like I was fired.”  She tells People that she got the news about her contract right after the show announced that Rosie O’Donnell, who openly dislikes Jones Reynolds, would be joining the show.  I’m no fan of Star’s, but that’s a pretty shabby way to treat someone whose been with your show from the beginning, even if she is pretty obnoxious.  Jones Reynolds made the announcement on the show on Tuesday, which was two days earlier than planned, by breaking into a segment on air conditioning.

Star JoneAccording to Access Hollywood reports, Star Jones is leaving her hosting gig on The View.  Her last day is set for sometime in July, just two months before Rosie O’Donnell is set to claim the seat at the table recently vacated by Meredith Viera who’s in turn claiming Katie Couric’s Today show mug.  Am I the only one getting dizzy?  Apparently Star will announce her departure on the show this week.  She’s been an original cast member since the show’s debut in August 1997.
