On Gear Live: Samsung S95C: The OLED TV You Can’t Afford (to Ignore!)

Oprah Winfrey When I first read that an audience member at one of Oprah‘s tapings was going to sue Winfrey, it immediately brought to mind those Saturday Night Live sketches where the women are going crazy and fainting because of Oprah’s giveaways. Seems the reason for this lawsuit is that the woman allegedly was injured during the stampede that occurred while trying to find a seat for the show’s taping.

Tayna Milner’s lawsuit says that the studio did not control the crowd properly, resulting in Milner being pushed down the stairs and suffering injuries on April 11th. She is seeking more than $50,000 in damages from Oprah Winfrey’s Harpo Studios.

Megan Mullally I feel really bad about this cancellation. I loved Megan Mullally on Will & Grace, and when I heard she would have her own show, I thought it would be a really good fit. Unfortunately, I don’t have a lot of spare time to watch daytime talk shows, but what little I saw of The Megan Mullally Show, I wasn’t thrilled. Some of it was interesting, but I think Mullally’s interviewing could have had a little more zip.

I guess I’m not the only one who was expecting more—after less than five months, the syndicated show has been canceled. The show wasn’t even given the green light to finish out the season, so you know things must have been bad. Production was halted immediately, and the remaining episodes will be shown through January. “I am extremely proud of the show we created and am thankful for the passion and tireless efforts of (executive producer) Corin Nelson and the entire staff,” Mullally said in a statement Wednesday. Not to fear, I’m sure we’ll be seeing more of Mullally in some format (stage, TV, movies) in the future.

Rosie O'Donnell Is Rosie O’Donnell more than Barbara Walters can handle? First there was the big stink O’Donnell made over Kelly Ripa’s conflict with Clay Aiken when he co-hosted Live With Regis and Kelly. Now come O’Donnell’s remarks that have offended the Asian-American community. In response to the Danny DeVito drunken appearance, O’Donnell said, “The fact is that it’s news all over the world. That you know, you can imagine in China it’s like: ‘Ching chong. Danny DeVito, ching chong, chong, chong, chong. Drunk. The View. Ching chong.’ ” Ugh. Can you imagine why people are offended? Of course, she is quick to smooth the waters, posting on her web site, “It was not my intent to mock.” She also said that it was “comedy” and that she does “many accents and probably will continue to.”

New York City councilman John C. Liu sent a letter to View executive producer Barbara Walters and told FOXNews.com, “The ‘ching-chong’ bit is not a trivial matter. It really hits a raw nerve for many people in the community – many like myself, who grew up with these kinds of taunts. We all know that it never ends at the taunts.”

The group UNITY: Journalists of Color, issued the following statement: “By allowing O’Donnell’s cheap jab at Chinese Americans to go unchecked, the network is essentially condoning racial and ethnic slurs. It’s a practice that should not be tolerated in today’s diverse society. That’s our view.”

Rosie O'DonnellRosie O’Donnell has only been on The View three months, and rumors are already swirling that she may be leaving the gabfest. This speculation came after she mentioned that she would like to work on Nip/Tuck in response to an audience member’s question at the commercial break. On Thursday’s show, she set the record straight, saying “Don’t anybody worry where Rosie’s going. She’s right here.” And the ladies of The View should be lucky that she’s sticking around—the show has seen an increase in viewership since Star Jones left and O’Donnell came on board. The show enjoyed its best numbers in its history for November, with viewership up 15 percent over last year.

Danny DeVitoDanny DeVito appeared on The View yesterday, noticeably drunk after a night out with George Clooney. Rambling on and appearing to be suffering from lack of sleep (hey, who wants to sleep when they’re partying with Clooney?), the It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia co-star managed to get through his interview. He was there to promote his upcoming Christmas film, Deck the Halls, also starring Matthew Broderick. Highlights of the interview included a never-ending blabberfest about the White House, with some comments about President Bush needing to be bleeped out. He even sat on Rosie O’Donnell’s lap. Yikes. Walters appeared uncomfortable during the interview and the co-hosts tried their best to steer him back on track. On Thursday’s show, Joy Behar commented that “He was drunk as a skunk.”

Following the appearance, DeVito left a message for Walters to apologize. Said Walters of the incident, “We love him, we’ll have him on again.”

Dave and Mary ConleyWell, Kentucky couple Dave and Mary Conley didn’t go the distance on The Amazing Race, but they did end up with some riches after all. This sweet couple gained a whole lot of love from fans of the 10th installment of The Amazing Race, with their honesty for playing the game. Few on reality shows have played a straighter game than Dave and Mary, and while they didn’t make it to the end, they were handsomely rewarded by The View. They appeared on the chatfest on Tuesday, where Rosie O’Donnell showered them with gifts to show her appreciation, saying they were “so unbelievably kind and giving.” They had previously been offered a cruise from The View, but during this interview received a package of goodies including: $1,000 Carhartt gift certificate, an Apple PowerBook laptop computer, a Canon Rebel digital camera, vacations to San Diego, Disneyland, and the Grand Canyon, and a 2007 Ford Explorer Eddie Bauer edition SUV. As if not enough, Rosie then presented them with a new three-bedroom, two-and-a-half bath home. So Sunday night’s elimination on The Amazing Race had me openly weeping, and the prizes Dave and Mary received on The View left me in a puddle of tears. I can’t take much more!

Kirstie AlleyI love Kirstie Alley—with the exception of Veronica’s Closet, I’ve been a big fan for a long time. And when she gained weight, she took it in stride, even poking fun in the series Fat Actress. Determined to lose the weight, she became a Jenny Craig spokeswoman and participant—showing us her progress every step of the way. And now, she’s making good on a promise she made to Oprah to appear in a bikini on the Oprah Winfrey Show. Last November, Alley told Winfrey she was inspired by a guest who lost 70 pounds and became Miss Bikini America. Alley decided to challenge herself to lose more weight by promising to pose in a bikini for the show. “I’d like to prove to myself and maybe other women my age that there can still be good years ahead of us,” Alley said in June’s People magazine. “Maybe even the best.” The show will air on Monday.

Martha StewartYesterday, reports said that Martha Stewart had fired a co-executive producer—but that didn’t stop the news that her syndicated show has been picked up for a third season.  Mark Burnett, executive producer for The Martha Stewart Show, said of the news, “Thanks to NBC Universal and our station partners for showing such incredible support so early in this, our second season. We look forward to a third year of entertaining content, filled with great storytelling and how-to information that will make a difference in the daily lives of our viewers.”

Is there nothing this woman can’t do? I’m glad to hear she’s getting another season—while I’m not a regular watcher, I do enjoy catching her shows from time to time. It’s always interesting to see her guests try to crack through her icy exterior. She is a domestic robot!

Bob Barker“Come on down!”... to retirement. The news is spreading that Bob Barker will be retiring from The Price is Right come June. Barker turns 83 years old in December and says, “I’ve decided to retire while I’m still young.” Barker has hosted the game show for 35 years, and has spent an amazing 50 years on television. While he’s considered retiring time and again during the last 10 years, this will be Barker’s final year. “I’ve gone on and on and on to this ancient age because I’ve enjoyed it,” he said. “I’ve thoroughly enjoyed it and I’m going to miss it.”

Barker cites the physical and mental rigors of the show as reasons for leaving, saying “I’m just reaching the age where the constant effort to be there and do the show physically is a lot for me. I might be able to do the show another year, but better (to leave) a year too soon than a year too late.”

Barker started in television in 1956, hosting the show Truth or Consequences. The Price is Right featured Barker as host on Sept. 4, 1972 and he has stuck with it for the long haul. Don’t worry though—he’ll still be spreading the word about getting pets spayed or neutered, working with animal-rights causes during his retirement.

Oprah Winfrey Ever the gift-giver, Oprah gave the audience of Monday’s show something a little bit different. Each member of the audience received a $1,000 debit card. But here’s the catch—each person must donate that money in some way to someone else. While it’s not a car or extravagant gift, the debit cards are, as she puts it, the “gift of giving back.” The 300 audience members received the cards, sponsored by Bank of America, to donate to the charity of their choice. “I can honestly say that every gift I’ve ever given has brought at least as much happiness to me as it has to the person I’ve given it to,” Oprah said. “That’s the feeling I want to pass on to you.”

To keep people honest, they are not allowed to give the money to a relative, but they can divide it among several charities. They also received a DVD recorder for taping the experience of donating their money. The stories will air on a future show. Oprah told her audience, “You’re going to open your hearts, you’re going to be really creative, and you’re going to spend it all at once on one stranger or spend a dollar on every person. Imagine the love and kindness you can spread with $1,000.”
