On Gear Live: Samsung S95C: The OLED TV You Can’t Afford (to Ignore!)

SNL Amy PoehlerIf the Writers Guild of America strikes on Monday as scheduled, you can expect a slate of late-night reruns to put you to bed.  Assuming a last-minute Sunday mediation session doesn’t prevent the 12,000 WGA members from walking out, daily productions ranging from to will immediately go into repeats.  So much for November sweeps.

The impact will not necessarily be limited to evening fare; daytime chatfests like may be affected as well.  Fortunately like my fave, , have stockpiled scripts that should leave them immune for months to come.

Tonight’s with Brian Williams could also be the last production for some time.  But given SNL’s lame tendency to air repeats anyway, who’d even notice?

Ellen DeGeneresPoochgate, doggygate… whatever you want to call it, ’ puppy problems are not quite over. Remember when Ellen sobbed on her show about that poor little dog that she adopted then gave away? Maybe you thought it was all over after the crying and the dog rescue seizing the dog and finding him a new family… or maybe you’ve lost interest in this story and moved on, but another chapter in the drama has surfaced. This time, an email trail documenting an exhange between DeGeneres’ girlfriend (Portia de Rossi), the hairdresser that was given the dog (and then the dog was yanked from) and the rescue, Mutts & Moms, paints a slightly different story than the sobfest that Ellen unleashed. The Smoking Gun posted the emails today, with de Rossi initially beaming about the dog, then later saying “he was just too much energy and time for us in our brand new home with so much going on in our lives.” She explained giving the dog to the hairstylist, to which the Mutts & Moms owner said she was “deeply disturbed” and that it was “in violation of our legally binding contract.” She also called it “a betrayal of my trust.” Even the hairdresser got in on the emal action, saying that Iggy had bonded to the family. Mutts & Moms explained that the dog would need to to be returned according to their process. And then, cue the tears from Ellen. It certainly hasn’t hurt ratings either—the show saw a 10 percent boost last week.

Valerie BertinelliI guess needs some celebrity support on her show—why else is she bringing on actress ? Bertinelli will soon join the chatty talk show host/kitchen diva/magazine queen/cookbook author/insert other ridiculously popular Rachael Ray item here. The former One Day at a Time star is being called a “celebrity content buddy,” which sounds like a really lame title for her. She’ll bring her single mother/working mom sensibility to the show, but it seems a bit unnecessary, really. Ray already has this talk show thing all sewn up with her extreme likeability and charm. What’s Bertinelli going to add to the mix? Don’t get me wrong—I grew up on One Day at a Time, so I’m not hatin’ on Bertinelli at all! I just don’t get it. Bertinelli has recently made a comeback of sorts as the spokeswoman for Jenny Craig. Her first segment on Rach’s show airs tomorrow, October 23rd, and according to Terry Wood, president of creative affairs and development at CBS Television Distribution, the two gals “get along like sisters.” Be on the lookout for twice the bubbly enthusiasm when Bertinelli joins the fold.

Nathaniel MarstonActor , who plays Dr. Michael McBain on ABC’s , was arrested Sunday morning in New York.  Unlike other celebrity scandals which usually involve misdemeanors, Marston is facing at least one felony charge.

The actor, who was reportedly enraged after exiting a cab, used a crate to assault three men; one of his victims suffered a broken leg.  It’s unclear what ignited his attack, though officers believe he was under the influence of a narcotic at the time.  Nathaniel, 32, was arrested for felony assault, reckless endangerment, criminal possession of a weapon and resisting arrest.  He was later transported to a local hospital where he was listed as ‘emotionally disturbed’.  This would not be Marston’s first brush with the law.  Back in 1999, while he was working on CBS’s , he was arrested for taking his rage out on an ATM machine.  (Dude, no money means no money.)

It is unknown what the producers of One Life to Live will do about the situation at this point; Nathaniel is currently involved in a major storyline on the show.  Meanwhile, a rep for told TVGuide.com that they ‘are aware of the incident and are reviewing the details.’  If fired from OLTL, this would be Marston’s second time around.  He was killed off back in 2003 (reportedly due to questionable work habits) but later brought back as a different character due to strong fan reaction.

(You can read a follow-up to this story here.)

Scrubs

MONDAY (10/22)

**No new episode of Ellen today.  She’s still recovering from all the doggy drama**

  • Live With Regis and Kelly (ABC, syndicated):  will be pulling double-duty this week as he fills in for Regis Philbin in NY and tapes his show in LA.  (I’m guessing we’ll still be seeing him on as well.)  If we’re lucky, Guillermo will fill in for Gelman too.
  • Prison Break (FOX, 8pm):  The show returns tonight after being preempted by baseball last week.  What?  You don’t care either?
  • Heroes (NBC, 9pm):  Many fans have been waiting for Kristen Bell’s debut tonight.  Unfortunately, she’s one more new character I’ll have to ignore.

Ellen sobs over IggyWhen I first started writing this, I had every intention of trashing talk show meltdown from earlier this week. My thoughts on the subject have, however, changed somewhat. Despite this, I do still feel that Ellen’s sob story during the opening moments of her daytime talk show were ridiculous. To tell your audience that you can’t be funny and do your show as usual because “things are going so terribly wrong right now” seems to be a little - er - melodramatic. This isn’t the week following September 11, 2001. There hasn’t been some horrible death in your family. You haven’t been stricken with an incurable illness - deal with it. More horrible things have happened.

With that said, I move on with my thoughts.

Drew CareyWhen Bob Barker left CBS’s Price is Right, the network started to scramble to fill his sizable shoes. Rumors abounded, names were tied to CBS, and everyone waited to see what would happen. Rosie O’Donnell turned the gig down, and Drew Carey emerged from obscurity to take the job. He did turn it down first, still tasting the bitter disappointment after his own show left the airwaves. CBS called back to woo Carey, a tactic that worked. Monday, Carey started his duties as the new host of Price.

In a recent interview, Carey stated, “This is a really good fit. I’m really comfortable here…” Well, I made it a point to watch Carey on Monday, and I am of a different opinion. The former Whose Line Is It Anyway? host seemed uncomfortable, nervous, and had difficulty controlling contestants. His jokes were dry, his chitchat vague, and his face bloated. But then, admittedly, I have never been a Drew Carey fan. I don’t think he’s funny…I think he just has a good knack for surrounding himself with terribly funny people.
