On Gear Live: 2024 Nissan Z Nismo Review

Dave ChappellePerhaps no one – not even Dave Chappelle himself – can explain why he up and left the lucrative deal that Comedy Central offered him to continue his show. The first season of Chappelle’s Show is the top-selling TV on DVD release, with over 3.5 million units sold. Season 2’s DVD is the third highest-selling TV on DVD release of all time, with 2.5 million units sold. Not too shabby, but the execs at Comedy Central apparently rubbed Dave the wrong way and wanted to control too much of his show, so he bailed. This left the fans wanting more, and luckily they’ll be able to get more this Sunday, July 9th, when Comedy Central airs Chappelle’s Show: The Lost Episodes. While the episodes are sketches Dave completed prior to leaving the series, they should give fans a taste of what they’ve been missing while whetting their appetite for the release of Chappelle’s Show: The Lost Episodes Uncensored DVD, coming out on Tuesday, July 25.

Charlie Murphy and Donnell Rawlings, both Chappelle’s Show regulars, will do the sketch intros for Sunday’s airing since Chappelle never filmed the intros before his departure.

Fear FactorUniversal Studios Home Entertainment has finally released the first season of Fear Factor on DVD. The show focuses on contestants facing their biggest fears for a cash prize (that is, if their biggest fears included eating gross fare such as worms and beetles).

Other challenges include being catapulted over 100 feet in the air, eating bull testicals, laying down in a snake pit, and “resucing” a fake baby from an underwater car. The winner received a prize of $50,000.

The two-disc collection contains the first nine episodes, as well as a preview of Season Two.

The Book of DanielNBC’s short-lived, controversial series, The Book of Daniel, which starred Aidan Quinn as a Vicodin-popping Episcopalian priest who talks to Jesus, will be coming to DVD in September.  The two-disc set, priced at $29.98, will feature all eight produced episodes of the show; only four episodes aired, though NBC did offer the rest online.  The show had already stopped airing in a few markets, though, due to its controversial treatment of religion.  Despite its being about a priest, the show was a bit soap opera-esque, what with the pill popping, the visits from Jesus, the alcoholic wife, the gay son, and the drug dealing daughter.  Even so, I thought it had its amusing and charming moments, so I’m glad all the episodes will be available. It may not be worth buying, but it can’t hurt to add it to the Netflix queue. Look for the set to hit the street on September 26th.

Futurama Comedy Central has ordered 13 episodes of former Fox animated series Futurama to debut in 2008.  The network bought the rights to the existing 72 episodes of the cult series last year, and talks about bringing the series back began at 20th Century Fox Television with show creators Matt Groening and David X. Cohen.  Voice actors Billy West, Katey Segal, and John DiMaggio are all expected to return to the comedy about a frozen pizza boy who wakes up 1000 years in the future.  The show has done well on DVD,  much like the other cancelled Fox show Family Guy, which was resurrected on that network last year.  Ah, the power of TV-on-DVD!

I’m ashamed to admit this – but I am secretly obsessed with Disney’s TV-movie High School Musical. (It’s true. I use my six-year-old daughter as a front to cover up my love of Disney’s “tween” shows and made-for-TV-movies). High School Musical is basically a modern day rip-off of Grease in which two teens from different cliques fall in love despite the odds. Oh, and there’s singing. Lots of singing. I’ll admit that the plot is contrived and the acting is mediocre at best, but the movie was mesmerizing anyway. The songs, although corny and combined with laughable choreography, are extremely catchy and guaranteed to get stuck in your head. Description

The film follows two teens, Troy (the basketball star) and Gabriella (the shy honor student) as they discover their love for singing and work up the courage to audition for the high school musical. Of course, their prospective cliques do not approve of their newfound interest in singing, nor does the school’s resident brother-and-sister musical star team, Sharpay and Ryan. I won’t give away the ending, but it’s completely predictable so I’m sure you can figure it out.

What makes this movie not just watchable but actually enjoyable is both its absurdity and its simplicity. It has the ingredients for any popular musical or teen movie and somehow manages to succeed at being both simultaneously. Don’t expect the cast to be winning Emmy awards or record contracts anytime soon, but you’ll still fall in love with their adorable characters.

Even if you don’t love this kind of movie, you will likely find it less frustrating to watch than some of the other stuff your kids turn on.

Apparently I’m not alone in my forbidden love. High School Musical, which premiered this January, was the Disney Channel’s most successful movie to date. Ask around and you’re likely to find parents and older siblings furtively buying the DVD or bestselling soundtrack for themselves. I, of course, bought it for my daughter. No really. It was for her. I swear.

SNL CommercialsYou know those sometimes funny, sometimes not, but always overplayed Saturday Night Live commercial spoofs? Turns out that the SNL peeps will be releasing a “Best Of” collection of their funniest commercial spoofs to date on DVD. While a complete track listing has yet to be made available, the blurb on the release states that “Colon Blow” and “Little Chocolate Donuts” will be yours for the taking. WrestleMania The Complete Anthology

Our friends over at World Wrestling Entertainment just sent us the new WrestleMania: The Complete Anthology box set, which will be on store shelves tomorrow. Before hitting you with a full review, we figured we would drop a bunch of images on you so that you can get a look at the work put in to the presentation of the set. For a wrestling fan, it’s easy to see that the WWE chose the artwork carefully. One bummer is that all discs are dual-sided - this means no art on any of the discs themselves. Luckily, the WWE more than made up for that with the inserts and graphical interpretations of some of the more memorable WrestleMania moments from the past 21 years. Check out a host of images after the jump.
