On Gear Live: 2024 Nissan Z Nismo Review

In case you didn’t see them last night, check out the finalists tapping into their inner Guitar Hero.

While I’m admittedly in the David Cook camp, the David Archuleta commercial felt quite awkward and wrong. Is it just me, or does his couch moment look like a bratty kid who just came in second?

As frequently as I use my Tivo, there always seems to be a ad or two that somehow manages to get past me.  And much to husband’s dismay, I’ll can easily find myself singing the commercial tune all day long.  These are the ones that have been driving me (and probably millions of others) delightfully batty over the past few weeks:

iPod NanoCommercial:  iPod Nano commercial
Description:  You catch glimpses of a video on different colored iPods.
Song lyrics:  One Two Three Four/ Tell me that you love me more/ Sleepless long nights/ That is what my youth was for/ Old teenage hopes are alive at your door/ Left you with nothing but they want some more/ Oh, you’re changing your heart/ Oh, You know who you are
Song name:  ‘1234’
Performer:  Feist

Commercial:  JCPenney commercial (“Magic”)
Description:  Strange, magical things surround women wearing JCPenney clothing.
Song lyrics:  Life inside the music box aint easy/ The malots hit the gears are always turning/ and everyone inside the mechanism/ is yearning to get out.
Song name:  ‘Music Box’
Performer:  Regina Spektor

Commercial:  Journey Diamond Jewelry commercial (“Sleeping Beauty”)
Description: Man gives his wife a diamond necklace while she’s sleeping.
Song lyrics:  How can I tell you that I love you, I love you/ I long to tell you that I’m always thinking of you/ But I can’t think of right words to say.
Song name:  ‘How Can I Tell You’
Performer:  Cat Stevens was the song’s original performer, but the 30-second cover for the commercial was done by Chan Marshall (who also performs under the name Cat Power).  Unfortunately, her version is not currently available for purchase…she only recorded a snippet of the full song.

Commercial:  Old Navy commercial (“Sweaters”)
Description:  Woman getting through her day with different sweaters.
Song lyrics:  If you are chilly, here take my sweater/ Cuz I love the way you call me baby/ And you take me the way I am.
Song name:  ‘The Way I Am’
Performer:  Ingrid Michaelson

DescriptionThe Herve (Her-vay) Report will take a look at the television industry and anything Kimberly Stewart tookis juicy in that all-consuming world of entertainment.  And just like its namesake, the underrated and undersized Herve Villechaize, the report will be short and sweet, tackling a couple of topics and hitting you harder than a headbutt from Mr. Villechaize to the, well, we’ll call them the “crazies.”

Mark

Your Calendars!

Regis Philbin, the constant professional, will be making his return to HIS show (get out of the way, pretty boy Consuelos), “Live With Regis and Kelly” on April 26th after having triple bypass surgery about a month ago.  The 75-year-old Philbin is most definitely a badass for wanting to come back to the daily grind and match wits with co-host, Kelly Ripa.  So, give your props to the O.G.

The Men of Miami Will Feel the Heat

Okay, read Wendy Michaels’ post on what I call, “Menudo’s Back (And I Don’t Mean ...Side).”  Want to know what I think?  HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!  Can’t we just leave it alone?  Do we really need to find the next Menudo?  What boy band from back in the day will be revisited with a lame reality show?  Please don’t let it be “Newer Edition.”  Please!  Okay, wait, if Bobby Brown could host it and he’s really messed up, and by this I mean “high,” then okay I can go for it - only hilarity can ensue.

Wait, is Brown even NOT incarcerated to do this?

Aw, Shhhhhhh… It’s The Sopranos

Last night’s episode kicked butt!  Thank goodness the violence is back!!!  Okay, the ubiquitous SPOILER ALERT… seriously turn back before it’s too late.  The New York mob is just a straight up mess, especially now that Johnny Sack died of the cancer while doing his bid in the big house.  I loved the cameo of Sydney Pollack, but I was half-expecting him to critique Vince Curatola’s way of acting ala Pollack’s Cingular commercial you see in movie theatres.  Anyway, who DOESN’T think that Christopher is going to go for Tony’s seat of power?  Anyone?  Anyone?  Bueller?

Keri RussellKeri Russell is the new face of CoverGirl. This summer, the former star of Felicity will appear in commercials and print ads for CoverGirl’s Outlast Double Lipshine.

Russell, who recently appeared in Mission: Impossible III, describes the commercial - in which she fights a group of ninjas - as a “mini action movie”.

With the exception of promoting her roles on TV and film, this is only the second time, the actress has appeared in a commerical. She got her start on MMC: The All New Mickey Mouse Club in the 80’s and 90’s.  You may have also recently seen her in The Upside of Anger or the mini-series Into the West.

Now Russell, 30, joins the ranks of pretty faces such as Christie Brinkley and Queen Latifah. Up next for Russell are two new films: Waitress and August Rush with Jonathan Rhys Meyers and Terrence Howard.

Meow Mix HouseWhat happens when there are no more fresh ideas for reality programs? Is it time to throw in the reality towel? Never fear – cats are here! Access Hollywood reports that the next reality show to hit the airwaves will feature 10 cats living in a New York house. Don’t panic – this is part of Meow Mix’s latest ad campaign, being broadcast in three-minute segments on Animal Planet, starting June 16th. The cats were selected from animal shelters, so the folks at Meow Mix hope to bring attention to pet adoptions (as well as sell more cat food, of course).

Now for the fun part. Rather than observing the cats milling around for three minutes, each week will feature a competition for the furry houseguests. Viewers vote online for their favorite and the cat with the lowest vote leaves the house… no losers in this game though. Each week, the evicted cat will move to a permanent home and get a year’s supply of Meow Mix.
The grand prize for one lucky cat is a corporate job with Meow Mix. According to the Meow Mix site, the winner will be named Feline Vice President of Research and Development, responsible for taste testing a variety of Meow Mix products.

TV Ads

What are the brains in TV advertising and technology up to now that TiVo reports its users skip 70% of commercials? A Philips patent application begun in 2003 reveals that TV viewers may soon be unable to fast forward or change the channel the moment a TV ad comes on the station. According to the U.S. Patents office, it will be an “apparatus and method for preventing switching from a channel during an advertisement display.”

Rather than rely on technology that forbids viewers the inalienable right to change the channel, it might simply be a matter of putting out vision worthy ads. Oh, they try, but there hasn’t been much marketing genius or else we would be enjoying every minute of the boob tube, including the ads.

KFC BucketThe next time you find yourself watching a recorded episode of your favorite show, don’t be so quick to fast forward through all the commercials. If you take your time to play the latest advertising game, you could win yourself some free food for the effort.  In what’s being touted as the ‘first documented case of hidden messaging in advertising’, KFC is trying to take advantage of the new promotions nemesis:  the DVR.

For those who own a DVR, it should come as no surprise that this new technological gem is the bane of the advertising industry.  Execs are having to come up with new and creative ways to put their products in front of our eyes, since we no longer have the tolerance to stand by and watch their commercials.  Hence—the increase of product placement in the shows that we do watch.

Hoping that they can entice a few intrigued DVR users with their latest marketing ploy, KFC is currently airing a hidden message in their latest commercial for the Buffalo KFC snacker sandwich.  A message that can only be read when screened in slow-motion.  These commercials - airing between Feb. 23 and March 3 - will give viewers a secret code that will instruct viewers on how to redeem a free offer.  Is a free KFC snacker worth all the effort?  Probably not.  But those who love a challenge will probably be compelled to try anyway.

Vince Carter Nike Shox VC V shoeNike recently unveiled the new Vince Carter Nike Shox VC V basketball shoe commercial.  The commercial features some of Carter’s greatest career moments, focusing on his fantastic dunks. What is unique about this commercial use of the song Slam by rap group Onyx played in the background.  The song, which was originally released back in 1994, may now gain exposure to some of the younger basketball fans.  Other Onyx songs ended up being synonymous with street basketball, such as their 1998 hit, Shut ‘Em Down.
