On Gear Live: iPhone 16e Review: Apple Just Killed the Budget iPhone

Tina FeyIf you haven’t checked out any of the NBC First Look clips on the NBC site, take a look at “30 Rock.” The clip has a number of laugh-out-loud moments, and it looks like it will be one you won’t want to miss come Fall. Tina Fey stars with fellow SNL alums Tracy Morgan and Rachel Dratch, with comedy golden boy Alec Baldwin (truly, this guy is good – as any of his SNL appearances prove). The strong cast and solid writing by Fey seem a lock for a sharp new comedy. Now, what about Dratch and Fey’s absence from SNL? Conflicting rumors either say Fey is completely done with SNL – or that she will at least continue to fill the seat for Weekend Update. Time will tell…

Jay LenoOkay, so we all accept that late night television hosts comment on the days headlines, but Jay Leno and Conan O’Brien’s opening monologues last night were so similar, I’m starting to wonder if they share a writing staff. And I’m not just referring to content, but down to wording and structure of the jokes.

Punchlines in common:

  • Referencing George W. Bush excusing himself from a meeting saying he was going to his room to read. Pause… The FBI decides “we’ve got to come up with a better excuse next time”
  • Begin with reports that findings show FEMA reimbursed over a billion dollars spent on drugs, vacations, and pornography….“and the rest of it was wasted!”
  • Reports from the new Superman movie claim that it was shot to have gay appeal…(Insert joke claiming Ryan Seacrest is the star here)

These jokes were literally almost delivered word for word on back-to-back shows. Isn’t the point of comedy the element of surprise?

Gilmore Lately it has been somewhat disappointing watching episode reruns of “The Gilmore Girls” on ABC Family.  The show started out so well until around the end of the fourth season.  Aspects of the show started to go downhill, such as the storyline and character personalities.  Just watching the past seasons on ABC Family can be depressing if you know what happens next.  Conflicts between Lorelai and Rory also began to surface in the later seasons as Rory goes off to Yale and becomes more of an adult.  This didn’t do much for the show since the mother and daughter pair were known for having such an incredible bond.  As this started to happen viewers of the show became increasingly uninvolved.  I guess that is what happens when you have a show on the air for so long.  The audience gets so attached to these characters that any serious changes often result in major disappointment.

ComicLast night, part two of the semi-final competition heated up on Last Comic Standing as the contestants battled it out for the five remaining spots. In part one of the episode, which aired last week, five finalists had been selected. The semi-finals consisted of 40 comics who each performed a 3-minute set for an audience and three judges – Kathy Griffin, Tim Meadows and Garry Marshall.

Last night’s show promised a twist…who doesn’t love a good twist? After the final 5 finalists were selected, host Anthony Clark (anyone else missing Jay Mohr?) announced that 2 additional people would be joining the finals as well. OK, kind of fizzled as a twist, but it did make things slightly more interesting.

The final 12 comics will live aboard the Queen Mary and continue to compete over the weeks for the coveted Last Standing prize. The finalists are: Chris Porter, April Macie, Joey Gay, Roz, Josh Blue, Gabriel Iglesias, Bill Dwyer, Michele Balan, Stella, Ty Barnette, Kristin Key, and Rebecca Corry.

If you visit NBC.com, you can select one of five contestants that didn’t make it to the finals to join the house. So, if one of your favorites didn’t get through, you have some voting power. The winners of the online voting will compete and the viewers will choose two comics to return to a later episode of Last Comic.

Kevin Beekin Comedy Central’s news mockumentary Dog Bites Man is in the doghouse with the law.  Comedy Central is trying to decide what to do with some of the footage from the half scripted, half improv show based on a dysfunctional morning news show in Spokane, Washington.  The show’s in hot water south of the border in the state of Oregon.  The state’s attorney general sent the network its second letter voicing their complaints about the cast filming one show in the state.

The LA Times printed part of the letter from the Oregon AG’s Office to Comedy Central. “We represent the state of Oregon and Portland State University in the dispute involving the fake news crew that visited PSU under false pretenses on May 16, 2006,” wrote Christine A. Chute with the office’s government services and education section. “Please provide me with written assurances that none of the footage filmed at PSU will be aired for any purpose whatsoever.”

The network hasn’t made up their mind on this video tape.  But they’ve already yanked one episode after another college professor caused an uproar of being caught on the “Punk-d” style show.

Entourage

The premiere picks up several months after last season’s finale. Aquaman has already been filmed and the premiere is just days away.  The most important task at hand right now is figuring out which of the lovely ladies out there are premiere-ticket worthy.

Ari, of course, has other matters to worry about.  His new West Hollywood digs don’t come with cleaning staff… or a working elevator… or a parking garage.  His main client, Vince Chase, is coming by for his first visit and Ari is freaking out.  As usual, his small staff of nine bears the brunt of his outbursts.

Although Vince seems perfectly at ease about his upcoming night, Ari is far from calm.  Vince apparently doesn’t recognize the importance of the evening and Ari wants to make sure he rises to the occasion.  This is Vinnie’s opportunity to show the world that is is man not a boy, and his date choice for the evening must reflect his status.  Simply arriving with his usual entourage will not suffice.  Vince still doesn’t seem concerned but decides that the only woman he would want to invite is his mom.  AQUAMOM!.  Vince’s brother, Johnny ‘Drama’, believes he would have to pull off a miracle to get her to LA… especially considering that she has never made an appearance at any of his affairs.  Regardless,  Vince is convinced that he can make it work.

Funny Man John CleeseJohn Cleese, one of the founders of the the comedy troupe Monty Python’s Flying Circus, the star of TV’s Fawlty Towers, and countless other comedic roles has a new one up his sleeve.  Cleese confirmed to The Times of London that he plans to write a history of stage, film, and TV comedy - from silent classics to sitcoms like The Office.

It’s the first time in recent months we’ve heard from Cleese after his character on NBC’s Will and Grace was written off after being Karen’s quickie husband.  Cleese told the Times, “I’m too tired to write new comedy.  I can never do better than the Fawlty Towers whatever I do. No, I very much want to teach young talent some rules of the game.”  No word on where he’ll teach just yet..but we’re sure he’ll have no problem filling up the seats.

It's Always SunnyThe upcoming second season of “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” begins Thursday, June 29th at 10 PM on FX. To give it a boost, the FOX Network will be broadcasting several episodes from the series’ first season, beginning tonight, June 11th at 9:30 PM, following Family Guy. The following two Sundays will feature an episode each night as well. FOX is hoping that this additional exposure will give the series a lift in viewership when it begins airing on FX.

The show centers around four friends who own a bar in (where else?) Philly – and received excellent reviews during the first season as an offbeat comedy that took risks. This season, Danny DeVito joins the cast as well. Definitely worth a look if you missed the first season.

Bill Maher Here’s the one I’ve been waiting for! Amazon goes TV. The perpetual non-profit has taken on the tube to sell books and other goods, and Bill Maher is its host. Is book selling really all that funny? Perhaps in the “Amazon Fishbowl” anything is possible. The late-night landscape will now include interviewing artists and authors. Since these folks can pretty much express themselves as seen fit, Maher’s new TV venture will finally be “politically correct!”
