John Corbett Returns to the Small Screen
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Comedy, Cable, Cable/Satellite,
If you loved John Corbett in Northern Exposure and Sex and the City and love to see him light up the big screen as well, you’ll be happy to hear that Corbett has joined the cast of Manchild. Based on a BBC series, the Showtime pilot is a comedy about four friends who are suffering through their midlife crises. Seems like a perfect vehicle for Corbett, who seems to bring humility to every role he plays. He is the essence of a nice guy, with that friendly smile… boy, do I miss Northern Exposure! On Manchild, Corbett is a former Deadhead who can’t seem to get his worklife or social life off of the ground. He replaces Paul Hipp, who was originally cast. Corbett will grace the big screen again in the film, The Messenger and goes the Lifetime original movie route with Nora Roberts’ Montana Sky.

Colbert Portrait to Grace Restaurant Wall
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Comedy, Cable, Cable/Satellite, Internet,
A portrait of The Colbert Report‘s Stephen Colbert was recently auctioned on e-Bay for charity. Turns out the highest bidder was Chad Walldorf’s chain of barbecue restaurants—bidding $50,605 for the painting which once hung above the fireplace on the set of Colbert’s show. Kooky lil’ painting, showing Colbert standing in front of a portrait of himself—so when he stands in front of it in reality, it’s Colbert standing in front of Colbert… standing in front of Colbert. Colbert announced Walldorf and his business partners as the winning bidder on Tuesday’s show. The partners, who oversee 17 Sticky Fingers restaurants, plan to put the painting in their Charleston, S.C. restaurant. An homage to Colbert, who calls Charleston his hometown.
“We don’t know much about art, but figured any time you can get two portraits for the price of one, then it must be a great deal,” Walldorf told The Associated Press. Proceeds for the sale will go to Save the Children.

Tyra Banks Dresses as a Dude
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Talk Shows, Cable, Syndication, Cable/Satellite,
Oh Tyra, what are you up to this time around? You may recall last season on her show, Tyra Banks dressed as a 350-pound woman to experience what it was like to be an overweight person. And now, she’s going to see what it’s like to be a guy—going undercover as a member of rapper Chingy’s entourage. The 32-year-old model has already donned the makeup and filmed her experience for an episode of The Tyra Banks Show scheduled to air on November 13th. Banks endured five hours of makeup and prep to become a man, saying, “I actually had a suit thing that went over me that made me have pecs and, like, a six-pack. And I was so muscular that it covered all of that breast tissue underneath it. We had to give me like, a heavier brow bone and a man’s chin and bone structure.” Tune in for Tyra’s transformation and see how people perceived her as a dude. And know that underneath, she’s gorgeous—no fair.

VH1 Plans Six New Reality Series
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Music, Reality, Cable, Cable/Satellite,
There can never be enough celebreality, at least not to music station VH1. The network will bring six new reality series, collectively known as VH1’s Wild Life. The focus on this group of series is music—hey, great idea for a music station! Brian Graden, MTV Networks Music Group President said of the new shows, “The breadth of this slate of music-based series illustrates, once again, that VH-1 is the only place for adults to go to see the kinds of music and storytelling that speaks only to them.”
The new shows include: Rags to Riches, Bridging the Gap, Ego Trip’s White Rapper Show, Man Band, and the Irv Gotti Project. No word yet on when the shows will air. Sigh. All of this reality show programming has me longing for the “good ole days” of MTV and VH1—you know, when they actually aired music videos.

The Learning Channel’s Little People, Big World has become an unexpected reality show hit. Following the lives of the Roloff family—with parents and one son who are dwarfs and two children of normal size—people took notice of their story and tuned in to see their challenges. Their 9-year-old son, Jacob Roloff, was seriously injured Saturday from a pumpkin launcher on the Roloff farm. The Associated Press reports that Jacob was hit in the face when the catapult inadvertently triggered. Monday morning, he was listed in serious condition at Legacy Emanuel Hospital in Portland, Oregon. A family friend was also involved in the accident and is in serious condition. Matt Roloff, Jacob’s father, posted on the TLC message boards that both his son and the family friend would require surgery but are expected to make a full recovery.

Nicole Richie—Too Thin?
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Reality, Cable, Cable/Satellite, Rumors,
Finally, Nicole Richie is doing something about her shrinking size. The ultra-skinny co-star of The Simple Life is now looking for help—her publicist told E! News that Richie has gone to a facility “to undergo diagnostic treatment to determine why she’s not been putting on any weight.” The rep further said, “She is working with a team of doctors and specialists whose focus is nutrition. It is important to Nicole that she achieve this goal in a healthy way, [but] this is not a treatment for an eating disorder.” For now, production of The Simple Life is on hold. Her weight has been of question lately—her response was that it was due to the stress of her breakup with Adam “DJ AM” Goldstein.
Last month, Richie responded to a CNN report that she was seeking treatment for anorexia, saying “Contrary to CNN’s false accusations, I did not check myself into an eating disorder rehab… I do not have an eating disorder, and I don’t know how many times I have to say it.” She also spoke out on the Tyra Banks Show, once again denying any eating disorder.

Janice Dickinson Gets Another Year on Oxygen
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Reality, Cable, Cable/Satellite, Ratings, Renewals,
Wow, that headline sounds funny, doesn’t it? What I’m getting at is that the Oxygen Network is giving Janice Dickinson’s show, The Janice Dickinson Modeling Agency, a second season. Dickinson, the self-proclaimed “world’s first supermodel” made her mark on Oxygen over the summer with the most successful original series in the network’s history. Season one included 10 episodes, but the second season will only be eight episodes, plus a holiday special. Never fear though—there may be fewer episodes, but each will be one hour long, versus 30 minutes last season. Debby Beece, head of programming and marketing at Oxygen said of Dickinson, “Janice’s first season was a big hit. She is a one-of-a-kind personality and our audience couldn’t get enough of her. Expanding the second season’s format will give viewers the chance to get to know Janice even better.” Dickinson’s say-what-you-think, no-holds barred disposition certainly made for entertaining television, so it’ll be interesting to see what Janice has in store for the agency and models this go-around. The new season will debut in January.

Scrubs’ Star Takes on Lifetime Movie
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Comedy, Prime Time, Cable, NBC, Scrubs,
Sarah Chalke, who stars as Elliot Reid on Scrubs, is taking on a decidedly different role. Why I Wore Lipstick to My Mastectomy tells the story of a woman who has discovered she has breast cancer and how she copes with it. Here’s the twist—it’s a comedy. The story is about Geralyn Lucas, now the director of public relations for Lifetime Networks, who documented her battle with breast cancer and survival in the book of the same name. Now adapted for a Lifetime movie, the story is a humorous look at how one woman coped with something that most can’t wrap their brains around. I’m looking forward to seeing Chalke bring her gift of comedy to this film—so far, I’ve read good reviews of her performance. Jay Harrington (Coupling, Desperate Housewives) plays Lucas’ husband—a doctor who is trying to understand what his wife is going through. According to Geralyn Lucas’ bio on the Lifetime web site, her cancer diagnosis was 11 years ago. The movie premieres on Monday, October 23rd at 9 p.m on Lifetime—a fitting film for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Project Runway Finale Breaks Records for Bravo
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Prime Time, Reality, Bravo, Cable, Cable/Satellite, Internet, Ratings,
The finale of Project Runway on Wednesday drew record-breaking numbers for cable network Bravo. I can see why—there was a marathon of the third season this past weekend, and since I was sick, I was able to finally see what all of the hype was about. And I was hooked. Sadly, I forgot about the season finale, but that didn’t stop 5.4 million other viewers from tuning in Wednesday at 10 p.m. Not only did that break records for Bravo viewership, but it also made Project Runway the top-rated show on cable for that night. Even the Bravo web site saw a healthy bump in numbers, thanks to the series. The site saw an increase in traffic of 267% over the previous season for the Project Runway section. In the end, Jeffrey Sebelia was named the winner of the clothing design competition.

Flavor of Love 2 Big Ratings Winner for VH1
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Reality, Cable, Ratings,
I actually had to read the article twice about Flavor of Love 2—as in, did I just read that Flavor Flav’s finale show has earned the biggest audience ever for VH1? It’s true. Unbelievably true. I’m not sure if anyone reading this has ever seen this show, but to me, it’s just terrible. Maybe the ratings come from that “can’t take my eyes off of this trainwreck” feeling. I can only imagine that’s what it is. I can tolerate a lot of reality shows, but this one is unbearable to me. I’ve flipped past it a couple of times and lingered for about two minutes, including last night’s finale where he made his ultimate choice. Wow. I don’t want to offend anyone, but I can actually feel IQ points dropping when I watch it. So I watched about five minutes of it last night and those are five minutes of my life that I can never get back. But enough about me.
Flavor of Love 2 had 7.5 million viewers. I know… it’s not a typo. That makes it the most watched program ever on VH1 and the number one cable show for the evening. Among the 18-49 set, Flavor of Love was the top-rated non-sports show on cable for 2006. Seems Flav has found his niche—after appearing on The Surreal Life, Strange Love (with Brigitte Nielsen) and two runs of Flavor of Love—he is the darling of VH1. Go figure.
Oh, and by the way, he picked “Deelishis” in the final episode.
