Consuelos Gets His Own Piece of the Spotlight

NBC LogoThough he’s probably more famously known as Mr. Ripa, plenty of fans will still recognize Mark Consuelos from ABC’s All My Children. The former daytime star will be in the spotlight as the host NBC’s new reality dating drama, Age of Love. Though the concept sounds frighteningly similar to the bevy of other love-related shows out there, Age of Love puts at least one twist on an age-old reality setup. Imagine one 30-year-old hunk (Australian tennis star Mark Philippoussis) and a group of women all vying for his affection. Now imagine that the women are separated into two distinct categories: 20-somethings and 40-somethings. Now, that might be something.

Consuelos and Philippoussis alone offer enough exotic hotness for any female viewers, who will no doubt root for their favorite women based on their own age demographic, but the rather stale dating set up (pick the one you want to date) may not push the envelope enough for viewers. The worst part about the show, which premieres tonight at 9pm ET, is that NBC is seriously calling it “the cougars against the kittens.” I’m offended for all of these women, and I’m not even going to watch the show.

On Age of Love, Ripa’s husband will serve as “wingman” for Philippoussis (his word – not mine) while narrating scenes for viewers. He will also “referee” the eliminations. According to Consuelos and NBC, Philippoussis (who has a history of dating young women) had no idea what he was getting into when he signed on for the dating show. Other than the age thing (cougars, kittens, however you want to say it), the show is very much like The Bachelor and any number of related shows that have come before. Will NBC score a hit, or have they already hurt themselves with the extremely annoying tagline that compares women to felines?
