There are two shows on these lists that I absolutely adore. That’s right, I adore them. I love them like newborn puppies. The first is Chuck. Not only is this spy-comedy well written but it is excellently cast as well–-the perfect storm of a good show. Zachary Levi is hilarious and just so likable as the title character and Yvonne Strzechowski is that bite-your-bottom-lip-till-it-bleeds type of sexy–-she looks like she can legitimately kick ass but is just so enchanting that you can’t help but love her. The supporting cast such as Joshua Gomez as Chuck’s best friend Morgan, Sarah Lancaster as Chuck’s sister Ellie, and Adam Baldwin as the hard-nosed NSA agent Casey, are all talented and each bring qualities that let them shine beyond their supporting roles.
I also really enjoy Bionic Woman. The first episode was hard to get into and the show really dragged. But the subsequent episodes have been really engaging–-full of action, subtle comedy, and just tiny hints of heart here and there via Miss Bionic’s relationship with her sister. The action in this show really rivals that of a lot of so-called “action movies” and although it is hard to believe that little Jamie Sommers could ever whip a grown mans butt, it only further sells her bionic enhancements. I can’t get over how much actress Michelle Ryan (who plays Sommers) reminds me of Alicia Silverstone.
I have not seen full episodes of Reaper but everything I see looks good. You can’t really go wrong with anything produced and directed by Kevin Smith. Though some would argue that statement by pointing to Jersey Girl, I still say that it wasn’t that bad. What I can’t understand is what these critics see in Dirty Sexy Money, Aliens In America, and Back To You. Nothing about these series interests me and having heard audio of Back To You’s first episode, I couldn’t help but wonder if this show was written for “amateur night on network TV.” It is hack comedy at its best.
If I wanted to watch a show like Dirty Sexy Money I’d watch Entourage. And if I wanted to hear funny jokes about terrorists, a la Aliens In America, I’ll watch any late night talk show; because there certainly wasn’t any “funny” to be found on this show. Whether any of the picks will live to see a second season (or even a full first season) is yet to be seen, but as always, you’ll have to stay tuned to find out.
