Pretty Little Liars: Pretty Chilling Season Finale
At the end of season one, Pretty Little Liars is down one villain… er, we think. And, we definitely solved Alison’s murder. We think. Well, at least we’ve ruled out one suspect on our list of possible “A” candidates -- we think.
Okay, so here’s what we know: the Pretty Little Liars season finale was awesome. But it left us with lots and lots of questions, just a few tantalizing answers and plenty of reasons to look forward to season 2 -- not the least of which is the return of Caleb (Tyler Blackburn).
At first, Hanna’s locker scene with Lucas (Brendan Robinson) felt totally random. She was cautious, he was cold, and they’re both suffering from broken hearts. But the picture got a little clearer when Lucas happened to overhear Mona (Janel Parrish) on the phone with Caleb, banishing him from Hanna’s life. She finally showed some of her sinister spots when she tried to work out a deal with Lucas -- keep her secret, and she’ll help him score Hanna (Ashley Benson) for himself.
Instead, Lucas apparently drove to find Caleb and bring him back to Rosewood, because “Hanna deserves to be happy.” Now, we remember why we loved Lucas in the first place.
Speaking of romance, Aria’s is not going well. Ezra Fitz (Ian Harding) is transferring to a new school, and for about a minute that seemed like a great idea. But then we found out that his mysterious ex-fiancee is a teacher at the new school -- and Aria (Lucy Hale) is hopping mad. The two had an argument, as yet unresolved, and their future is completely up in the air.
Meanwhile, Spencer (Troian Bellisario) and Toby (Keegan Allen) are growing closer and their relationship seems rock-solid.
But, love’s the least of it. The big issue of the episode was the home movies. The Pretty Little Liars discovered that someone -- presumably Ian (Ryan Merriman) -- has been recording them for years, capturing very private moments. And not just them; there were also videos of the Cavanaugh household. One particularly dicey bit shows Jenna (Tammin Sursok) blackmailing Toby.
This prompted the girls to confront Jenna at school. She told them a story about Alison (Sasha Pieterse), who threatened Jenna with the videotape while visiting her at the hospital (“the guy I like likes to make movies”). She used the video to blackmail Jenna -- “I’m going to keep this under lock and key. And, if you keep our secret, it’ll stay there.” Don’t forget, Alison is the reason Jenna is blind. If she’s blind.
And sometimes, we just aren’t so sure she is. Turns out, Jenna’s fingerprints are all over everything…including cop Garrett Reynolds (Yani Gellman). The two are heavily romantically involved, if their passionate kissing scene is any indication. Jenna is also working with Ian -- she called him after the confrontation to let him know that “they found the video. And they’ve seen it.”
All of it pales in comparison to what happened next. Spencer’s sister Melissa (Torrey DeVitto) called to say she needed a ride -- she went to the church to plan the baby’s christening, but husband Ian never showed up. The two were in a car crash as they were heading back to the church to retrieve Melissa’s forgotten cell phone. Neither was seriously injured, but the baby’s life hangs in the balance. Whether it will survive or not is anyone’s guess.
Spencer went back to the church anyway, to look for the phone and for Ian. An ugly confrontation played out between the two, and Ian admitted to killing Alison. That all makes things nice and neat, doesn’t it? Ian is Ali’s killer, Ian must also be A. Ian recorded the videos. Ian even showed that he’s truly crazy by trying to kill Spencer in the church bell tower. The only problem: Ian’s exact words were “I didn’t mean to hurt Alison. It was an accident. I pushed her, she fell.” But, Alison suffocated to death.
Ian’s plan to kill Spencer by throwing her down the bell tower didn’t succeed… because A stopped him. When the hooded figure we associate with A appeared, Ian had just enough time to ask “What are you doing here?” before he was pushed into the ropes. Notice he didn’t say “Who are you?” to the shadowy figure. Clearly, Ian knows A.
When the other girls showed up, Spencer was a quivering wreck… and Ian was swinging in the ropes under the church bell, one of the cords wrapped around his neck. By the time the police arrived, however, his body was gone and the building was empty.
We’re still not sure what it means. Did A move the body… or did “the body” move on its own? In any case, A is still alive and well. A parting shot, sent via text as usual, let us know that A hasn’t finished toying with the Liars yet: “It’s not over until I say it is. Sleep tight while you still can, bitches. -A.”
The series returns to ABC Family in June on Tuesday nights.
