90210

Years have passed since the show rocketed to success (and was subsequently canceled), and yet is still dominating entertainment news. If you’re longing to see some familiar faces on the fall spin-off of the popular teen series, you won’t be disappointed. If you’re hoping to see Luke Perry on the new show, you will be.

“It’s that 90210 time of year,” Perry laughed with reporters as he answered questions about the spin-off (though he was actually promoting an unrelated project with the Hallmark Channel). Luke Perry has already stated that he will not - that’s right, will not - become Dylan again on camera. According to his own comments, Perry does not really wish to do the series without mastermind Aaron Spelling, famed TV producer (and sire of Tori Spelling) who passed away in 2006.

And what about Perry’s longtime on-screen love Brenda Walsh, portrayed by . Amid much gossip of on-the-set problems, Doherty left the show after four short seasons (and cemented her behind-the-scenes persona as extremely intractable). “I think if Shannen wants to work, that’s a good place for her,” Perry said of Doherty’s return to the 90210 set.

Shannen Doherty will return as Brenda Walsh, though the terms of her contract and the number of episodes she will appear in remains uncertain. Tori Spelling will appear as Donna Martin, but not in the first few episodes of the series. Spelling recently gave birth, and told the press that for the time being she is going to “focus on recuperating,” and that her family is her “first priority.” Jennie Garth will also re-appear as Kelly Taylor. For years, rumors have persisted that Doherty and Garth do not get along and some suggest this is part of the reason the former left the show.

The new series, titled simply 90210, will begin on much the same note as the original. The show will track the lives of a family, originally from Kansas, who move to hip ‘burb after the family matriarch suffers from alcohol abuse. In the original Beverly Hills: 90210, the Walsh family (comprised of Jason Priestley’s Brandon, Doherty’s Brenda and parents Jim and Cindy) moved to the zip code from Minneapolis. Lori Loughlin is under contract to be a part of the show’s regular cast.

As in the original, the show will revolve around a brother and sister (Dixon and Annie Mills, played by Tristan Wilds and Shenae Grimes, respectively) who begin attending West Beverly Hills High School (actually a fictional institution). These two teens will face not only the trouble of a new ‘hood and a new school, but will suffer the compounded problem that their father is the new school principal. Annie, much like the Brenda Walsh character, loves the theater.

will premiere on the CW in the fall 2008 season. No official date has been announced by the network.
