Sources say that FOX is already shopping around for a new American Idol panelist, someone to replace Simon Cowell when he jumps ship next year to work on his new X-Factor gig. Who could possibly offer enough smooth wit, harsh criticism and a charming smile to fill Cowell’s shoes on the show?

Some seem to think the answer is Howard Stern (which, it goes without saying, would be a monumentally horrible decision). Quoting a mysterious “insider,” an article that appeared Friday morning says that the radio shock jock is FOX’s “top choice” for Simon Cowell’s soon-to-be-vacated position on the panel. The article goes on to say that Stern has already been approached about the series, after he announced during his radio show that his contract with Sirius XM Radio will expire next year.

Will it happen? Absolutely not. American Idol is probably going to be pretty hard-up for ratings next year, but it’s still a family show, people, and on network TV. Stern’s too salty even for basic cable.
