The Game Show Network will sponsor the first-ever game show awards, an event that will celebrate everything the cable channel loves about televising gaming. Howie Mandel will emcee the event, which airs June 6 at 8pm ET on GSN.
“I want the game show awards to be unlike any awards show on television,” Mandel said in a recent statement. “We’ll see what happens.” Mandel’s comedic career enjoyed renewed success with the launch of Deal or No Deal, which became a hit for NBC. Mandel was nominated for an Emmy in 2008 by virtue of his work on the show.
The comedian will pull double duty at the awards event, as he’s one of the nominees for Best Game Show Host. The other nominees in the category are Ben Bailey (Cash Cab), Wayne Brady (Don’t Forget the Lyrics!), Drew Carey (The Price is Right), Jeff Foxworthy (Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader?), Richard Karn (Bingo America), Regis Philbin (Million Dollar Password), Alex Trebek (Jeopardy!) and Meredith Vieira (Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?). Pat Sajak and Vanna White (Wheel of Fortune) have been jointly nominated. Most of these game shows have also been nominated in the Best Game Show category.
Other award categories include Best Reality Competition (American Idol and The Amazing Race are among the nominees), Favorite Classic Game Show (Let’s Make a Deal and Match Game are both in this category), Favorite Dating or Relationship Show, Favorite Celebrity Player and Favorite Celebrity Team. Award categories for Favorite Game Show Catch Phrase, Favorite Price is Right Game, Most Outrageous Game Show Contestant and Funniest Game Show Moment provide a little something different for the ceremony, which is scheduled to run for 2 and one-half hours.
Despite the staggering number of nominees and awards categories, the event will still take the time to celebrate some of the best and brightest in the genre. GSN will pay tribute to Bob Barker, Mark Goodson and Monty Hall during the broadcast.
Before the show airs, game show fans can log onto the GSN site to vote for the nominees they like best.
