The reign for TV’s longest-running drama will soon come to a end. On September 18, Guiding Light will air its final hour.

Today, the execs at CBS officially made its announcement about the 72-year-old sudser. It was news that came as no surprise to anyone watching or involved. GL‘s ratings had been ranking at or near the bottom of daytime broadcasts.

The serial, which got its start on radio back in 1937, found its way onto the small screen in 1952. Approximately 15,700 episodes have aired in total.

“Being on the air for more than seven decades is truly remarkable, and it will be difficult for all of us at the show to say goodbye,” Executive Producer Ellen Wheeler said in a statement to Soap Opera Digest. “I’m proud of everything we’ve been able to do, including outstanding storytelling, our community service around the country with Find Your Light and the launch of our new production model. This show has such a rich history, wonderful fans, and I’m honored to have been a part of the GL legacy.”

There’s be no decision yet as to what will eventually replace the program. Guiding Light‘s departure leaves only 7 soap operas left to choose from—3 on ABC, 3 on CBS and 1 on NBC.
