VIDEO: Adam Lambert Brings Controversy to American Music Awards

I’m guessing this wasn’t the kind of “entertainment” ABC was hoping to see from Adam Lambert.
At tonight’s American Music Awards, the American Idol finalist raised eyebrows higher than his own hairstyle. During an S&M-laced performance of “For Your Entertainment,” Lambert leads a male dancer around the stage with a leash, simulates oral sex and then later kisses a male keyboardist—all on live TV. (Just in case you hadn’t already heard—he’s gay.)
Although it’s unclear which portions ABC was prepared for, E!‘s Marc Malkin said the kiss was not the cards. “Very good source tells me that ABC and producers did NOT know adam lambert was going to makout w/keyboardist…” Malkin tweeted.

Meanwhile, an interview Lambert conducted backstage with Rolling Stone makes it seem as if his actions weren’t entirely approved beforehand. He said a possible West Coast edit of the number would be a of discrimination on ABC’s part.
“It’s a shame because I think that there’s a double standard going on in the entertainment community right now,” Lambert stated. “Female performers have been doing this for years — pushing the envelope about sexuality — and the minute a man does it, everybody freaks out. We’re in 2009; it’s time to take risks, be a little more brave, time to open people’s eyes and if it offends them, then maybe I’m not for them. My goal was not to piss people off, it was to promote freedom of expression and artistic freedom.”
He then added: “In a roundabout way it’s a form of discrimination because it is a double standard. They didn’t censor Britney and Madonna macking onstage did they? But yet two men kissing they’ll censor?”
Well, Adam - in Britney and Madonna’s case, that kiss did initially air on a cable channel (MTV). I also think the simulated sex is way more of an issue than the kiss.
JUST FOR THE RECORD: Although the West Coast version did NOT show the oral sex segment of the song, the kiss WAS shown.
So what do you think of the whole thing? Do you think Lambert pushed it just a bit too far? Or do you feel like it was not a big deal at all?

I can’t see why anything is shocking these days, considering we’ve already seen Janet Jackson’s boob.
True. But one came with intent, the other didn’t. 😊
