Entourage:  Crash and Burn

EntourageEric is out test-driving a car to replace the Maserati that Vince gave away to those Aquaman fans.  Mid-drive, he gets a call from Ari on his cell.  He discusses the meeting they have later that morning with the Warner Bros. head.  Ari says they’ll need to talk nicely if they really want Medellian.  The studio would need to delay the Aquaman 2 production for 90 days so they can do both shoots.

Eric returns to the car lot only to have Vince spring a surprise on all his boys.  In light of their Aquaman success, they will each be receiving a new car.  All except Turtle, that is.  His surprise will consist of management help.  Vince has worked it out with a local DJ to have Saigon’s track heard.  Any agents interested will then be given Turtle’s personal number.  Although he is excited about the help, Turtle is bummed that he won’t be getting a car as well.  He tries to hide his disappointment though and claims he is happy for the opportunity to make it on his own.  Thankfully, Vince lets him off the hook and tells him it was a joke.  They would all be leaving the lot with Aston Martins.

At the Warner Bros. meeting, the studio head (Alan) tries to show Vince how family is treated by giving him a $1 million ‘allowance’.  Ari, Vince, and Eric alert Alan to the Medellian project and ask for a way to make it work out.  Alan says that he has a large water tank on Stage 5 and can’t have it just sitting around.  As a compromise, he gives them 65 days to get the job done.  Since Paul Haggis originated in TV, the boys are convinced that he’ll be able to master a shortened shooting schedule.  After the meeting, Ari tells Vince that he will do what he can to make him happy.  Vinnie asks Ari to sit down with Turtle about his recording artist…and he agrees.  Later, Ari’s housekeeper gives him unsettling news about his daughter, Sarah.  Apparently Sarah has been keeping up her phone conversations with the actor, Max Ballard, and was recently discussing an upcoming boat trip.  Ari encourages his housekeeper to keep him apprised so she can get a big gift for El Navidad.

At home, Drama admits to Vince that he felt left out of the Ari deal.  Vince promises he’ll try and arrange something but can’t guarantee that Ari will represent him.  The next morning, Vince tells Turtle and Drama they will have to share Ari’s time since his schedule is limited.  Turtle is upset that Drama has now moved in on his meeting.  To make matters worse, Drama tries to call ‘shotgun’ on the talks.  Turtle refuses to let Drama have the first crack at Ari, so they take off in their individual cars and race to lunch.  On his way to meet the boys at Spago, Ari talks to his daughter about a supposed school-related function she wants to go to.  He refuses to believe that they are holding a math meeting on a boat and knows that it is about Max.  Sarah screams ‘You can’t keep us apart forever.  I love him!’ right before she hangs up the phone.

Pulling up at the restaurant, Drama and Turtle bolt out of their cars to jockey for position.  Once inside, Turtle calls ‘shotgun’.  He said Drama wasn’t allowed to call it before they were even there.  When it’s time for him to bat, Turtle is too busy fielding calls to get the ball rolling quickly.  When he eventually gets to his pitch, Turtle tells Ari that he can have a piece of Saigon’s acting career.  All rappers sooner or later end up acting.  For some reason, Ari agrees to help back Turtle up.  Moving on, Drama starts by unloading a really sappy speech.  In an apparent move to shut him up, Ari agrees to rep him too.

Meanwhile, Vince and Eric are meeting with Paul Haggis about the reduced shooting schedule.  Given all the contacts he had to make in Colombia, Haggis says it would be impossible to accomplish it all in 65 days—not unless Vinnie is willing to reduce about 30% of his key scenes.  Eric and Vince try to make him understand their contractual obligations, but Paul is unmoved.  “If I let contracts rule my life, I’d still be working on Facts of Life.”

Ari runs into director Penny Marshall in a parking garage.  She tells him about the Encyclopedia Brown series she’s working on.  When Ari hears that the production will consist of a 24-week shoot in Kazhakstan, he suggests she hire Max Ballard for the role.  Ari then meets up with a worried Vince.  Vince wants Ari to call James Cameron about pushing the start date.  To Vince’s surprise, Cameron is not producing the sequel after all—Michael Bay is.  Just because Vince is committed to a three-picture deal, doesn’t mean James Cameron is.  Ari then gets serious and tells them that Alan was being ‘nice’ when he gave them 65 days.  Vinnie realizes that he can’t get out of his commitment and prepares to cancel with Haggis.

Later that night, Turtle is playing pool back at home with Saigon and his friends.  Saigon is impressed that Turtle has managed to get him a lot of radio exposure and gives him a token of his appreciation:  a cubic-zirconia nameplate necklace.  Meanwhile, Eric is surprised to find Paul Haggis at their doorstep.  Paul is upset about losing Vince and has come over to brainstorm.  After a night of drinks and smokes, it doesn’t seem like much headway has been made.  Then Eric has a moment of brilliance.  Since Haggis wants Vince to gain 70 lbs for the second half of the movie, why don’t they shoot half now and half after the sequel is over?  They agree to the idea and it appears that all has been resolved.

The next day Eric alerts Ari to their master plan.  He then asks to have a dinner meeting set up with Alan so Vince can thank him for being so accommodating.  On a side note, Ari learns from Lloyd that Atlantic Records reps have been calling about Saigon.  Sony and Interscope as well.  Ari delivers the good news to Turtle and tells him (prophetically?) that his life is about to change.  Later, Ari pulls up into his driveway only to see his daughter storm into the house upset.  Apparently, Max has accepted the lengthy Encyclopedia Brown shoot in Kazhakstan.

That evening at the Warner Bros. dinner, Alan admits he is surprised that Vince and Eric figured out the scheduling conflict.  He really didn’t intend to give them the 65-day allowance after all.  Alan only said it because he didn’t think they would succeed.  As it is, he doesn’t want to have his Aquaman franchise associated with cocaine.  It’s business, not personal.  Upset that Alan is not keeping to his word, Vince demands $20 million for the sequel…or he walks.  Nothing personal.
