Trent Green, the two time Pro Bowl quarterback the Kansas City Chiefs recently traded to the Miami Dolphins, has apparently taken a cut in pay to play for the Dolphins, resulting in a contract worth $10 million less than what he received from Kansas City.
Even though the base pay is significantly less than he would have received had he stayed with KC (and had they decided to actually keep him rather than go young), the bonuses and incentives in his Miami ink can help make up for that. In 2007, Green will have a base salary of $1.5 million, with a signing bonus of $1 million and a workout bonus of $100,000. If Green can remain active for the entire season, he’ll net a nice $200,000 a week for an active status. If Green manages to stay healthy all year, that’s a bonus of $3.5 million just for not being hurt.
Assuming Green has a good year (including a decent playoff run [snicker]), he’ll be able to earn up to $2.5 million in bonuses. In 2008, Green’s base pay will be $2.8 million with $600,000 in bonuses, and 2009 will net Green $3.5 million in base pay with another $600,000 in bonuses. Even with bonuses his final two seasons on his contract are far below what he would have earned with Kansas City, but that doesn’t really matter, as there’s no way Kansas would have kept him on long enough to pay for those two years.

Happy Father’s Day to all the dads and grandfathers out there. Here’s a picture of players from my dad’s time, Wilt the Stilt and Bill Russell, two of the all-time greats.Enjoy the day surrounded by your loved ones as they spend about 40% of what they did last month for Mother’s Day! Dropping Dimes is giving props to each and every one of you, including LeBron James and Bruce Bowen, who received new additions to their families during the NBA Finals. The second round in our one-on-one tourney kicks off today, but first we look back on the four players that headlined the past week, and ask them, “Who’s your daddy?”

If you’re a big Raiders fan like I am, you’ll just love this: the NFLPA canceled the final week of their offseason training program due to complaints that it was too hard. “The union has complained about the high level of intensity, player aggressiveness and fast pace of our practices and, as a result, has taken away the final week of our offseason program,” said Lane Kiffin, the Raiders new coach and the youngest head coach in the NFL.
So what exactly were the Raiders doing that was so dangerous the NFLPA had to step in? Were they running 40s in a mine field? Maybe they brought Romo back in for some “special counseling” of younger players.

Kobe wants to be traded…again
Posted by Brendon Lindsey Categories: Athletes, Front Office, NBA, Trades,
Kobe Bryant met with Lakers owner Jerry Buss in Barcelona, and guess what? He wants to be traded again. Within the past month Kobe has demanded to be traded, changed his mind and claimed he would never leave L.A., and then demanded to be traded again. Can we officially change Kobe’s name to Sybil yet?

D’Backs place Randy Johnson on DL
Posted by Brendon Lindsey Categories: Athletes, Injuries, MLB,
The Diamondbacks have placed starting pitcher Randy Johnson on the 15-day disabled list, citing “muscle tightness in back” as the issue. If it were something that minor, would he even be placed on the DL in the first place? Me thinks Arizona is hiding something.
So far this season Johnson has started 9 games for a record of 4-2. This year he has an ERA of 3.52, which is his lowest since 2004. Unfortunately, he’s also on pace for the least games he’s played since 1996, when he pitched in only 14 games for the Mariners. Edgar Gonzalez will take Randy’s spot against the Orioles, and Enrique Gonzalez (no relation) has been called up to join the Diamondback’s bullpen until the Big Unit makes his Big Recovery.

According to ESPN, Larry Brown is looking to get back into coaching, perhaps with the Sacramento Kings. After a horrible year going 23-59 with the Knicks, Brown doesn’t “...want to end my career at 23-59. I feel I can do better.” Recently Brown was linked to the Bobcats and Grizzlies, but as those vacancies have been filled Sacramento may be his final choice this season, assuming Cleveland fans don’t run Mike Brown out of town.
Brown, 66, has coached 11 teams in the NBA, ABA and NCAA, including two championship teams—one for the NBA Detroit Pistons, and one for the NCAA Champion Kansas Jayhawks (1988).

Grant Hill not ready to voluntarily retire just yet
Posted by Brendon Lindsey Categories: Athletes, NBA, News, Rumors,
Seems like Grant Hill doesn’t want to hang up his orthopedic shoes just quite yet, after all. Working as an analyst at the NBA Finals seemed to cement Grant’s desire to return to the NBA next season, rather than fuel his desire to leave and begin his broadcasting career.
“I love it here at the finals. It makes me want to play in the finals. Being in this situation is what you should play for,” he said. “It’s a real motivating factor right now. It’s the goal of every player to reach this point. That’s what I want.”

Rockies win; Beckett suffers first loss
Posted by Brendon Lindsey Categories: Athletes, MLB, Scoreboard,
Garrett Atkins and Kaz Matsui both go 3-5 from the plate as the Rockies beat the Red Sox 7-1, giving Josh Beckett his first loss since September 27, 2006. Atkins hit a grand slam in the third inning, which gave the Rockies a 5-0 lead and Atkins his fifth homer on the season; he also had a single and a double.
Last season, Atkins hit .329 with 29 homeruns. So far this year, he’s been struggling, and Rockies fans have been questioning whether or not Atkins was worth playing. So far in June, however, Atkins has had a resurgence, batting .342 (13-for-38) and knocking out two home runs, five doubles, and nine RBIs in 11 games, bringing his season average to .242.

Culpepper rear-ended—Miami and Vike fans laugh at irony
Posted by Brendon Lindsey Categories: Athletes, Injuries, NFL,
As many of you know, it’s not officially Summer until Daunte Culpepper pops out of his hole and sees his shadow; or until he gets hurt. I’m not sure if he saw his shadow yet, but guess what? Daunte is hurt! Again! How unexpected!
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, Mr. Culpepper was involved in a rear-ending on a Florida freeway last night, not terribly unlike the rear-ending he has given Miami Dolphin fans for the past season. Initial reports have stated he has bruised and possibly torn something in his hand. They’ve listed it as his non-throwing hand, but given his recent performances, that could very well be either one.

Blogging our way through Game 4 of the NBA Finals
Posted by Brendon Lindsey Categories: Championship, NBA,
Game 4 of the NBA Finals begins shortly, and it shouldn’t surprise anyone that the San Antonio Spurs are on the cusp of eliminating the Cleveland Cavaliers. The Spurs winning 4-0 would be fitting, given the great lengths the NBA has gone through to try and tie in the new Fantastic Four movie. (We get it, Duncan, LeBron, Manu, and Parker are like the Fantastic Four, but without superpowers, without saving the world, and competing against one another.)
So far this series, Duncan and Parker have been absolutely trashing the Cavs, while Manu has been fairly sporadic in his playing, like normal. Can the Cavs manage to win one at home in their first Finals in the Age of LeBron? Will the Spurs continue to make basketball boring for the casual fan? How many times will we be reminded about Robert Horry’s accomplishments, and will we be treated to several more on-screen appearances by Brent Barry? Most likely: no, yes, seventeen, and yes.
Stick around EndScore and refresh this page every now and then, as I’ll be constantly blogging my thoughts while watching the game unfold—unless I fall asleep, that is.
