Description “Be not afraid of greatness: some are born great, some achieve greatness, and some have greatness thrust upon ‘em.” From Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night

Okay, here comes Round 2. This team’s off to a solid start after taking Ray Allen with its first pick. There are too many good players left to start nit-picking over certain categories. So this pick is like meeting friends for dim sum; there’s enough options for everybody, you might have to look at something before you buy it, and it’s hard to screw up the good time everyone is having. Could it be that a 30 ppg scorer is somehow still on the board? Consider me sold.

Round 2, Pick 1: Allen Iverson

Description

Fantasy Football Drafts are in full swing now with only two weeks remaining until the season kicks off.

Here are my top 10 fantasy football recievers for 2006:

  1. Chad Johnson: You know he is going to have yet another big year as this offense will get better and better with Carson Palmer’s maturity.
  2. Steve Smith: He was huge last year, and is bound to catch more balls with a servicable number 2 reciever lining up on the other side.
  3. Larry Fitzgerald: He’s young and as long as Kurt Warner can stay upright, he is sure to get in the end zone upwards of 10 times.
  4. Marvin Harrison: I dont care if he’s getting up there in years, no one is more consistent.  The Colts are going to be throwing even more this year.
  5. Tory Holt: The other Mr. Consistency. He’ll put up good to great numbers year in and year out.
  6. Terell Owens: He’d be worth the risk at this point in time.  Drew Bledsoe is bound to have a career year with all of his options and if Terell gets fully healthy he is as good as anyone.
  7. Reggie Wayne: Another Colt? Peyton is going to spread it to both of these guys again this year.
  8. Randy Moss: He was the best once up a time.  Now he is just above average.
  9. Chris Chambers: Again, this guys stats depend on his quarterback.  It remains to be seen how much partying Dante will be doing on South Beach this fall.
  10. Santana Moss: he is flat out dangerous and should get plenty of single coverage this year.

DescriptionRound 1, Pick 12: Ray Allen

On the plus side…

Like the players taken before him, Jesus Shuttlesworth’s game sells itself. Last year he finished 10th in scoring (25.1 ppg), 3rd in free throw percentage (90.3%), and first in three-pointers made per game (3.5). He has a nice all-around game, by being able to couple his point production with about 4 rebounds and 4 assists per game for his career. Throughout his career he has been good for just under 1.5 steals a game. It is not the sexy two-plus swipes a game that the Matrix, AK-47 or Chris Paul can deliver, but it was good enough to place him inside the top 20 in steals last year.

Yao Ming taking it to the rack!Yao Ming, C, Houston Rockets

Scott brought up some good points with his 10th overall pick of Chris Paul.  In particular how he was thinking about drafting Yao Ming, but was worried about his health.  Well, while I can understand Scott’s feelings, I gotta go with mine and take Yao here at 11, especially considering that this is a league where we have to start dos grande hombres.  That is to say, a pair of centers.

As far as Yao’s health concerns, let’s take a look at it.

Description If anything, this pick shows how much debate can be had about the 10th pick in the first round.  After the top tier guys are taken, owners that land this draft slot can either take a Risk/Reward approach, or make a slight reach on a safer selection.  My decision came down to, do I think Andrei Kirilenko will play more than 60 games this year?  Is Yao Ming going to be 100%?  Can Allen Iverson keep up his warrior-type play, and still be there for me come playoffs?

If any of these questions were answered with “maybe,” it isn’t something I’m willing to tag a first round draft pick on.  Since this is pretty much the case for all three of the aforementioned players, I’m going with talent, upside, and pure “studliness.”

Round 1, Pick 10: Chris Paul (PG-NO)

Round 1 Pick 9: Chris Bosh

C@*k blocked or CB’ed. According to Urban Dictionary, the definition of c@*k block – n. one who prevents another from scoring sexually. In real life, if you get CB 4 in one night that is not a good thing.  However, in fantasy basketball if you get CB 4 it is a great thing for your fantasy squad. Of course, we are referring to Chris Bosh who wears # 4 for the Toronto Raptors.

CLEVELAND INDIANS

Ryan Garko has started the last six games at first base, four of which were against right-handed pitchers.  The early returns look good, 3 home runs, 12 RBIs, and a .326 average in his first 46 AB.  With regular playing time, he can be used in AL-only leagues for a power boost.  Just be aware that he had an 82% contact rate and a .247 batting average in 364 Triple-A AB, so there can be some serious batting average downside.  When Casey Blake returns, it should also cut into his playing time.

If the Indians closer situation wasn’t confused enough, Thomas Mastny pitched 2 innings for the Indians only successful save conversion of the week.  Mastny earned a promotion to the big leagues with a 2.61 ERA and a 10.9 K/9 in 38 Triple-A innings.  Since coming to the Indians, he has 8 K’s, 2 BB’s and I ER in 6.1 innings.  With no one else stepping up in the bullpen, he might be worth taking a flyer on if you are desperate for saves.

In just his second full season, 24-year old Grady Sizemore has shown improvement across the board.  He is four home runs away from matching last year’s total of 22, has already hit four more doubles than last year and has 9 triples.  As his power matures some of the 41 doubles that he has this year will turn into home runs, which gives him 30+ home-run potential.  After going 22 of 32 in steals last year, he has improved to 18 of 21 so far this season.  His batting eye of .54 is also up from last year’s 39.  That number is also a bit deceptive because with an 11% BB rate, he is working counts well.  His batting eye would be higher if he made better contact.  Sizemore is a 30/30 potential player and a candidate to be a top fantasy performer in the coming years.

DescriptionImagine a round of golf with your friends that has been fun and competitive thus far. No one usually does anything too crazy when starting off a round. But heading towards the 8th tee, some of them are going to want to take out their driver and try to hit the ball right at the flag. So what, they say, if the hole is set up as a dog leg right, and that their short-cut is protected by trees, a valley and a lake of water. Did I mention that the green is also protected by a series of bunkers and that the wind is blowing in your faces? Let these “expert” friends of yours take this sucker shot. You are going to be like Tiger Woods and play it safer but smart. Leave the big dog to eat another day, take out your 3-wood and launch it a country mile right down the fairway.
