Okay, so things are not looking so good for this team. Pau Gasol being lost for 3-4 months is a tough pill to swallow. The Memphis Grizzlies will be lucky if he suits up for 50 games this season. Your friendly neighborhood fantasy doctor here thought a nice bigball team was on the way with Elton Brand and Gasol on the same team. So how do I regroup and have this team hoppin’ again?

Round 3, Pick 8: Lamar Odom, SF/PF, Los Angeles Lakers

Joe JohnsonIs it a stretch that Tim Duncan will top 20 ppg again? No. What about 70% from the line? Well that is another story, is it not? It is important to slowly creep that FT% for this team up to a competitive standard.  I also want to address having Arenas as my lead guard, because as hype as he is, he is not a 8-10 per game dime dropper. Plus I want to take advantage of Gilbert’s strength in treys and TD’s dominating boards. Looks like it is time for a player with a mean game but ordinary name.

Round 3, Pick 7: Joe Johnson, PG/SG, Atlanta Hawks

Jason Richardson
Round 3, Pick 6: Jason Richardson, SG, Golden State Warriors

Don Nelson is back as the head coach of the Golden State Warriors and he’ll bring the Run & Gun style that he established with the Dallas Mavericks. There are thoughts (and hopes) that Baron Davis will thrive under Coach Nelson since Davis excels at the transition game, but the big winner will be Jason Richardson. The former back to back (’02-’03) slam dunk champion will thrive in the open court offense and will surely add a few more highlight reel dunks this season.

I’m telling you, J-Rich will set career highs in points this season under Coach Nelson.

NEW YORK YANKEES

With back-to-back doubleheaders against Boston over the weekend and Corey Lidle going to the bullpen due to tendonitis in his right index finger, Jeff Karstens and Darrell Rasner will get starts this week against the Blue Jays.  In 28.2 innings this year, Karstens has a 4.08 ERA, 3.8 K/9, 2.5 BB/9, and a .77 G/F ratio.  Fly ball pitchers with low K/9s are a risky proposition.  It seems like a disaster start is right around the corner for Karstens.  Rasner has put up good numbers in Triple-A this year, a 2.76 ERA, 7.2 K/9, and a 1.7 BB/9.  He has continued the good work since being called up to the Yankees, with 8 K’s and no walks in 11.2 innings.  If you are chasing wins, Rasner could be a good pickup for the week.

Gary Sheffield should also be back by the end of the week.  Mixed leaguers should keep him reserved until there is a good read on how the playing time will shake out.

Mariano Rivera’s next bullpen test will be tomorrow.  If all goes well he could return on Friday.  For those that have both Rivera and Kyle Farnsworth on their teams, reserving Rivera is the better bet.  Even if he returns on Friday, Farnsworth could still see save chances over the weekend, as it is doubtful that Rivera will pitch more than an inning or in back-to-back games.

Alfonso SorianoWashington Nationals 2B Alfonso Soriano joined Jose Canseco (Oakland Athletics, 1988), Barry Bonds (San Francisco Giants, 1996), and Alex Rodriguez (Seattle Mariners, 1998) in the elite 40/40 club, where the four players hit at least 40 home runs and stole 40 bases in a season.  The historic moment happened in the first after Soriano reached base on a single off of Milwaukee Brewers SP Dave Bush and on a 2-0 count to SS Felipe Lopez, stole second uncontested.

Dwight HowardRound 3, Pick 5: Dwight Howard, PF/C, Orlando Magic

By the time the season starts, all you have to know is this - Dwight David Howard will not legally be able to drink alcohol.  Why is this important?  Well it’s important not so much for fantasy basketball owners, but all of those that try to guard or box out Howard.  “Big men of the NBA, after a game of banging and bruising with Dwight Howard, you deserve a drink.”  And since Howard can’t imbibe alcohol, his defenders can have his because they’ll need it to numb the pain!

Entering the league at only 18 years of age had to be a tough challenge, in so many ways for Howard.  However, you can count on one hand the number of “straight from high school” players that have become stars or stars-on-the-cusp after only two seasons and Howard is a finger on that hand.  In fact, make Howard the middle finger because of his length (he’s got wingspan for days), height (6’11”), and the fact that he may just be the next great big man in the middle.

Let’s check the numbers.

Rashard Lewis Stud?  Check!
Center? Check!

With two picks in the bag, I felt that this selection either needed to address notable weaknesses or simply pick the best player available, and hope for the best on the way back.  Though Kevin Garnett is one of the better passing big-men in the league, the assist category is obviously my weakness at this point.  However, with a couple point guards going off of the board with the most recent picks, I decided to steer away from the run, and go with whom I felt was the best guy out there:

Round 3, Pick 4: Rashard Lewis, SF, Seattle Supersonics

Mike Bibby is one happy dude!Round 3, Pick 3: Mike Bibby, PG, Sacramento Kings

Many of you were wondering who I’d team up with Shawn Marion and Ben Wallace, well, wait no more.  I’m going with the second overall pick of the 1998 NBA Draft out of the University of Arizona, PG Mike Bibby.  No wonder Bibby looks so happy in the pic to the right.  He’s joining my team!

In any case, despite getting drafted in a such a high spot, Bibby is basically unknown to the general NBA fan outside of the West (yes, I believe in the East Coast bias), thanks to playing with the Vancouver Grizzlies who at one time thought C Bryant Reeves was a key to their growth as a new franchise, and now with the Kings where he basically took a backseat to players such as PF Chris Webber and SF Peja Stojakovic.  Well, he takes a backseat to no one now, even the super-talented and super-volatile SF Ron Artest.  As much as Artest can make or break the Kings’ success, this is Bibby’s team and you’ll definitely want him on yours.

LOS ANGELES ANGELS

Kendry Morales is back with the team.  He had a fine season in Triple-A with 12 home runs, 52 RBIs, and a .320 batting average in 256 AB.  The same cannot be said for the time spent in the major leagues this year.  In 186 AB, he is hitting a low .237, while not displaying much power.  He remains a prospect, but with the Angels still in the playoff hunt, he will not see much playing time.

Jered Weaver continues his outstanding rookie campaign with a record of 11-2 and a 2.30 ERA.  With a .62 G/F ratio, the right-hander is an extreme fly ball pitcher.  Pitching in Angel Stadium is a good fit for that skill set, as it reduces left-handed batting power by 7%.  His home/road ERA split of 1.38/3.05 plays this out.  There are three American League stadiums that significantly increase left-handed batting power.  They are Ameriquest Field (37%), U.S. Cellular Field (31%), and Safeco Field (19%).  Of the three, Weaver has only pitched in Safeco Field.  In his first outing there, he allowed 1 ER and no home runs in 7 innings.  His second Safeco Field outing is a different story.  In that game, he surrendered 4 home runs in 4.2 innings.  It will be interesting to see how he fares in the other two left-handed batting, homer-happy parks.
