Exchange Center: Week 5

Posted by Alvin Lai Categories: H2H, Site Features, Sleepers, Talent, Trades, Waiver Pick Ups,
Ron Chow and I continue to watch our team roll in our Dropping Dimes experts league. We have held on to our first place ranking with a 28-8 record. As for the other Dime droppers, Dennis Velasco and Brandon Haraway sit in playoff position, 5th and 6th place, respectively. Sarge and his squad have struggled and rank 12th in a 14-team league. Who’s the caboose thus far? Jon Loomer from NBA.com and his “Loomer’s Losers” have been, well, losing. His team has averaged a 6-3 loss in league play thus far.
I have been checking out waiver wire articles from various sites, and more often than not, every player listed was drafted or was picked up many days ago. Hopefully by listing the pick-ups from 10-, 12- and 14-team leagues, you can get the sense of what is happening around the fantasy world, and land some of these blue chip waiver wire players.

Daredevil Plans for Eagles, Browns, and Lions

Posted by Frank Nevarez Categories: Buffalo Bills, New York Jets, Cleveland Browns, Jacksonville Jaguars, Tennessee Titans, San Diego Chargers, Philadelphia Eagles, Detroit Lions, Saint Louis Rams, San Francisco 49ers, Editorials,
The Tennessee Titans’ Jeff Fisher jumped out of an airplane to join the team at practice last week. He was trying to keep it loose for a team that was undefeated at the time. As we now know, it didn’t work. Tennessee lost to the New York Jets, 34-13. While the Titans are winners for 2008, which teams are in vital need for some tricks to pump up their flailing seasons?

Million Dollar Arms Found in India?

Posted by Eno Sarris Categories: Pittsburgh Pirates, Editorials, Minor Leagues, MLB Draft,
Okay, not quite million dollar arms, but a California sports marketing group has found a $100,000 arm. And a $2,500 left-handed arm as well.
Confused? Seems like equal parts Hail Mary and brilliant strategy, but an Indian reality show joined the marketing group in trying to find major league arms in India, a country with no baseball infrastructure whatsoever. The idea was that one man in a country of a billion would own the natural ability to throw a baseball 85 miles per hour (roughly the speed of Greg Maddux’s fastball - last year).
Seems like a reasonable idea, doesn’t it? I mean, the overall talent level in baseball has taken a huge leap forward ever since the doors were opened and talent was cultivated throughout Latin America and South America and Japan. Baseball talent has found its way to the top in countries around the world and slowly crept towards America, and they’ve broken stereotypes along the way. We’ve had all sorts of hitters and pitchers from around the world. The World Baseball Classic is opening further doors around the world. And in a country of 1 billion, you’d think there be all sorts of baseball talent teeming just under the surface in India.

Tennessee Titans Receive First Loss From New York Jets

Posted by Dennis Velasco Categories: New England Patriots, New York Jets, Tennessee Titans, New York Giants,

Sorry, Tennessee Titans, but the undefeated dream season is over as the New York Jets (8-3) shattered the dream with a 34-13 victory over the previously unbeaten Titans (10-1). However, not going undefeated might be a good thing, especially when considering the New England Patriots’ unfortunate fate last season as they lost to the New York Giants in the Super Bowl for the Pats’ first loss. With the win, the Jets are proving that they will be a force to reckon with if they make it into the NFL playoffs, after beating the Titans this week and AFC East division rival Patriots the previous week.
Brett Favre had an efficient game and proved to still have “it” - the ability to pick apart a defense and lead his team to victory. Favre finished the game going 25-for-32, accumulating 224 passing yards, throwing for two touchdowns and one interception. Backup running back Leon Washington ran for two scores, gaining 82 yards on eight carries, including a 61-yard TD run. The Titans dangerous running game with rookie Chris Johnson and LenDale White rushed for only 45 yards on the ground, partly because the Titans were trailing and needed to throw the ball. NFL Comeback Player of the Year candidate Kerry Collins tried to bring the Titans back, but couldn’t, finishing with 243 yards on 21-of-39 passing, and one TD.
The Titans try to get back on the winning track as they head to Motown, visiting the Detroit Lions. The Jets try to continue their winning ways as they host the Denver Broncos next week.

Chase Utley - Out Four To Six Months

Posted by Dennis Velasco Categories: Philadelphia Phillies, Fantasy Baseball, Injuries,
Philadelphia Phillies 2B Chase Utley will rehabilitate from hip surgery for a significant amount of time. How significant will be determined by what the surgeons see this week when Utley undergoes his surgery, but it’s pretty much a given that he will miss the beginning of the 2009 MLB season. If the surgery relieves Utley of pain, a month won’t matter much for, arguably, the Phillies’ best player (with others arguing for former MVPs Ryan Howard and Jimmy Rollins). It’s hard to choose who Philadelphia’s best player is, but considering Utley’s last four season averages (.305 BA; 28.8 HR; 103.5 RBI; 110.3 R; 13.5 SB) at a thin position, you’re not going to find stats like Utley’s, which makes him very valuable. However, the Phils won’t have him to start, but they probably only care that he finishes the season with them… as late as late October 2009.
Fantasy Baseball Impact: Luckily, in fantasy baseball, there is such a thing as the disabled list in real baseball, which Utley will surely go on. So, if you draft Utley, you can stash him on your team’s DL and wait for him to get back on the field and wreck havoc at the plate like he has been the past several seasons. However, the question is, where do you draft Chase Utley? Well, we’ll have to wait and see how long he’ll have to rehab, but depending on the size of your league, you will probably have to “stretch” for him in the second round, especially if he’ll only be out a month of the regular season. If, worst case scenario, Utley doesn’t come back until June, somewhere in the late third/early fourth round sounds about right. Crazy, isn’t it? To grab a guy who could be out three months in the third or fourth round? But, that’s how good Utley is.

NFC North Week 12 Predictions

Posted by Charles Mitri Categories: New York Jets, Jacksonville Jaguars, Tennessee Titans, Chicago Bears, Detroit Lions, Green Bay Packers, Minnesota Vikings, Atlanta Falcons, Carolina Panthers, New Orleans Saints, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Saint Louis Rams, Editorials,
While everyone will be tuned into the New York Jets-Tennessee Titans game to see if Brett Favre & Company can knock off Tennessee, the Chicago Bears, Green Bay Packers and Minnesota Vikings will be slugging it out for top honors in the NFC North. Coming off an humiliating 37-3 trouncing to the Packers, the Bears will travel to the Gateway to the West to take on the woeful St. Louis Rams. Did someone say “massacre in the making”? You betcha. running back Matt Forte will decimate the Rams defense and Kyle Orton will shower the St. Louis secondary with an aerial bombardment. Bears by 14.

Bidding On Burnett

Posted by Charles Mitri Categories: Boston Red Sox, New York Yankees, Toronto Blue Jays, Editorials, Rumors,
The latest news from the owners’ meetings is the bidding war between the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox for Toronto Blue Jays hurler A.J. Burnett. No one needs to be reminded that there’s no love lost between Boston and New York and this is one deal that’s shaping up to be a no-holds barred free-for-all. No word yet on what each team has offered Burnett, but you can bet your bottom dollar that Hank and Hal Steinbrenner will not allow Red Sox General Manager Theo Epstein to outbid them for Burnett’s services.

I went 2 games over .500 and am at 54% for the year. Yes it would be nice to make faster progress, but its all about learning and its all about the accumulation of knowledge for years to come. Unless one of your bets is going to net you enough to retire, you are going to be betting again. Settle in, get comfortable and start paying attention.
