NFC North Week 14 Predictions

Let’s get the easy pick out of the way. The Minnesota Vikings travel to Ford Field to take on the Detroit “0-16 here we come” Lions. The Lions have more holes in their squad than the 7th Cavalry had at Little Big Horn. The Vikes, fresh off a huge win over the Chicago Bears will easily roll over the hapless Lions by a hefty margin. Look for Gus Frerotte and Company to strike early and often. Minnesota improves their record to 8-5 while the Lions drop to 0-13. Vikings by 17.
The Jacksonville Jaguars visit Soldier Field to take on the Chicago Bears. Still smarting from their 34-14 loss to the Vikings last week, the Bears will be out for blood. They also need a win to keep pace with the Vikings. Kyle Orton is due for a big game and Matt Forte will run roughshod through the Jags porous defense. Bears by 10.
The Green Bay Packers host the Houston Texans at home. Tough one to call. The Packers stayed close to the high flying Carolina Panthers for the entire game, but again came up on the short end of a 35-31 tally. Houston isn’t a playoff caliber team yet, but they’re headed in that direction. Their Monday night 30-17 win over the Jags was pretty much a one-sided affair. The Texans jumped out to an early 16-3 lead at the half and played dead even ball in the second half, as each team traded off touchdowns like kids playing two hand touch. Even though the Packers still have a mathematical chance at winning the NFC North, they need to peel off four wins in a row while the Bears and Vikings need to completely tank their last four. Long odds by any standard. The one plus in the Green Bay column is that they’re playing at home — they just can’t seem to buy a road win this season. The Texans are an up-and-coming team who improves every year. Texans by 10.

Javier Vazquez Traded to Braves

Javier Vazquez was traded from the Chicago White Sox to the Atlanta Braves today and the balance of power shifted in the National League East.
Okay, nothing quite so impressive happened. And the reports differ on who the Braves gave up - was it Tyler Flowers, the brawny powerful catcher with great on-base ability that was the cornerstone of the deal? Or was it Jo-Jo Reyes, the mercurial lefty with poor results so far in the major leagues? The reports agree that speedy infielder Brent Lillibridge is in the deal either way, but Lillibridge doesn’t sting too much, as he’s struggled to reclaim his former top prospect status since hitting the high minors. And the remaining players will surely be long-shots from the low minors.
In order to really get at whether or not this trade was worth it, let’s assume the more expensive trade, the one with Flowers, is the real trade. Was it worth giving up a top offensive catcher prospect for two years of Javier Vazquez?

After missing a dozen games with an ankle injury, Hawks forward and all-around fantasy stud Josh Smith will be back in uniform for tonight’s game against Memphis. Though, if you have him on your roster and have other options given all of tonight’s games, you may want to think twice about starting him.
“That’s the big emphasis right now is to try not to overdo it because I’m so excited to be back,” Smith said. “That’s just a part of listening to your body and knowing how many minutes your body can take the first night back. And I won’t lie, my body will have to tell me because in my mind, I want it all back right now.”

Sean Avery has always been known to be a pesky, perhaps even annoying, presence in the NHL. However, after making a snide, backhanded remark to the press on Tuesday, Avery may find himself in deeper trouble than he’s been in at any point in his career. Avery was meant to discuss his earlier remarks about Jarome Iginla with the press (in which Avery said, “nobody cares about Jarome Iginla.”), when he instead said, “I’m just going to say one thing. I’m really happy to be back in Calgary; I love Canada, I just want to comment on how it’s become like a common thing in the NHL for guys to fall in love with my (former girlfriends). I don’t know what that’s about, but enjoy the game tonight.”

There’s a Monta Ellis sighting in the free agent pick-ups this week. Ron Chow grabbed him for our main league, which is a 12-team daily transaction head-to-head league. Meanwhile Ron and I continue to lead the way in the experts league. This week we take on Dennis Velasco, though I say “take on” to be polite. His roster still includes Stephon Marbury, for goodness sake.

NFC Playoff Predictions

The playoffs are looming large for several teams in the NFC. As of this writing, the Arizona Cardinals are the team who seem to have their division wrapped up with a 7-5 record over the second place San Francisco 49ers who are 3-8. The New York Giants are right on the cusp of wrapping up the NFC East with a 10-1 record, two and a half games over the second place Dallas Cowboys who are 8-4. In the NFC North, the Chicago Bears and Minnesota Vikings are knotted with 6-5 records, one game ahead of the Green Bay Packers who are 5-6. In the NFC South, the Carolina Panthers and Tampa Bay Buccaneers are knotted at 8-3 for first place, one game ahead of the Atlanta Falcons who are 7-4 and two games ahead of the 6-5 New Orleans Saints.
What follows is just one writer’s garden theory on who will win their respective divisions and wild card teams.

NFC North Week 13 Predictions

The big showdown in the NFC North is between the Chicago Bears and Minnesota Vikings at the Metrodome. The Bears are fresh off a 27-3 shellacking off the St. Louis Rams while the Vikes posted a convincing 30-12 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars. Minnesota QB Gus Frerotte posted average numbers on 12-of-20 passing for 120 yards and one interception. Force of nature running back Adrian Peterson ran for 80 yards on 17 carries. Bears field general Kyle Orton riddled the Jags’ defense on 17-of-28 passing for 132 yards and one TD while backfield partner Matt Forte punished the Jacksonville defense for 132 yards on 21 carries and two scoring strikes. Even though the game is being played in Minnesota, this contest is something of a toss up. Minnesota is 4-1 at home, but the Bears have been playing .500 ball on the road with a 3-3 record. This is a must-win game for both teams, but not necessarily a knockout blow. Whoever wins will sit alone atop the NFC North but only by one game. Whoever loses this game could be in a tie for second if the Green Bay Packers pull off a win over the Carolina Panthers. The Vikings lost a 48-41 melee at Soldier Field and will be looking to avenge that loss. Minnesota by 3.
While the Bears and the Vikings are butting heads in the frozen north, the Packers will host the Panthers at Lambeau Field. The Packers were decimated by the New Orleans Saints, 51-29, on Monday night while the Panthers were clobbered by the Atlanta Falcons, 45-28. The Falcons reeled off 28 fourth quarter points, making the Panthers defense suspect. Both the Packers and the Panthers are still in the hunt for playoff seeds, but the Packers are fighting for their lives in the NFC North and will be out for blood after losing in the Big Easy. Packers by 7.
The Detroit Lions? They recorded their weekly loss on Thanksgiving Day. This time out it was the Tennessee Titans that handed them a 47-10 pasting. At least the Lions get the weekend to lick their wounds. What else is new?

I Knew There Was a Reason I Liked Russell Westbrook

In one of my deeper leagues, I’m the proud owner of Oklahoma City’s Russell Westbrook. Though I can rarely find a spot for him on my active roster, I’ve been a big fan of what the kid has been able to do thus far. And while he’s not putting up OJ Mayo-like scoring numbers, SLAMOnline gets dirty with the numbers behind the scenes.
Through his first 14 games (this excludes the Thunder most recent game vs. Phoenix), Westbrook has been on the floor for 52 percent of the total minutes Oklahoma City has played. When comparing the team’s production per 100 possessions when the rookie is on the floor as opposed to when he is off the floor, the Thunder scored 10 more points and allowed 16 less points. That means for everyone 100 possessions that Westbrook was on the floor for those games the Thunder were at +25.9 when compared to the time that he was on the bench.
Factor in the point that this team is dreadful and Earl Watson isn’t exactly the point guard of the future, and I think this kid is going to have a huge second half for fantasy owners. We could be looking at about 16/5/6 with about two steals a game. If he can somehow increase those assist numbers even more, you’re looking at a Rajon Rondo with higher scoring. We could all use something like that at the end of our bench.
