I’d Much Rather Have Donte Stallworth In The NFL Than Michael Vick

Cleveland Browns WR Donte Stallworth was suspended indefinitely by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell pending a meeting between the commissioner and Stallworth’s representatives. Stallworth pleaded guilty to a DUI manslaughter charge for killing Mario Reyes on March 14 after a night of drinking in Miami Beach, FL. Stallworth has started serving a 30-day sentence in jail, which will be followed by two years of house arrest, provisions for which Stallworth will be allowed to play football, and then eight years of probation.
Considering the indefinite suspension leveled on former NFL superstar QB Michael Vick for dogfighting and killing dogs, Goodell had to come down harshly on Stallworth who actually took a human life, however, by accident. Stallworth acted stupidly and he knew it and knows it now. There has been nothing but remorse on Stallworth’s part, even agreeing quickly with the deceased’s family on financial compensation, although, all the money in the world cannot replace Mr. Reyes. From the beginning, Stallworth has been cooperative with law enforcement. On the other hand, Vick tried to keep his illegal doings on the down low and has shown remorse only insomuch as to be able to get back on the football field.
Yes, what Stallworth did was incredibly stupid, incredibly dumb, and incredibly irresponsible. However, there was no maliciousness in his action (and I pray for Mr. Reyes’ family), however, you cannot say the same for Vick. I’m hoping Goodell allows Stallworth to take the field a lot sooner than he does Vick because despite being a Vick fan before all of this dogfighting mess and still believing he has useful talent in the tank left, I wouldn’t miss having an NFL without Michael Vick. It’s been just fine without him. What the NFL needs are more Stallworths that take responsibility for their actions no matter how stupid they were.

Los Angeles Lakers Win The NBA Championship
![](http://assets.gearlive.com/images/member_photos/photo_6615.jpg)
Posted by Dennis Velasco Categories: Championship, Editorial, Kudos, NBA, Playoffs,
The Los Angeles Lakers beat the Orlando Magic four games to one in the NBA Finals, earning the team’s 15th NBA title. Put in a historical perspective, they are now 15-15 in NBA Finals match-ups and are second only to the Boston Celtics and their 17 NBA titles for most championships by a franchise. Phil Jackson also moved ahead of Red Auerbach for the most titles by a head coach, winning his 10th NBA title, the fourth with the Lakers. His other six came with the Michael Jordan-led Chicago Bulls. Perhaps, most importantly, Kobe Bryant won a title with Shaquille O’Neal… okay, it’s only important to all those that hated on Kobe and said he couldn’t win a title without Shaq (this group includes Shaq himself), well, in your face!
Bryant was a symbol of will and determination and getting the job done. In fact, such ferocity and competitiveness hadn’t been seen since Jordan took the court. And now, the monkey is off his back and if the Lakers can somehow sign both Trevor Ariza and Lamar Odom, the Lakers could win a few more championships. Pau Gasol and Andrew Bynum are locked in and provide great interior presences, Derek Fisher looks as if he can still play for a few years and it looks like Jordan Farmar will be ready to take up the PG mantle. Contractually, Jackson only has one more season left, but if the core group of players can stay intact, don’t be surprised if he signs another extension. This season, Jackson seemed less stressed because of team chemsitry and the lack of two alpha males (Kobe and Shaq) going at it.
Congratulations to the Lakers and their fans. And to all the Kobe haters, bite it!

PIttsburgh Penguins Win The Stanley Cup
![](http://assets.gearlive.com/images/member_photos/photo_6615.jpg)
Posted by Dennis Velasco Categories: Pittsburgh Penguins, Detroit Red Wings, Post Season,
The PIttsburgh Penguins won an improbably Game Seven on the road versus the Detroit Red Wings. Beforehand, there has been a 38-year-old road jjnx Game Sevens of the Stanley Cup Finals. Yet, the Pens did it and they did it with their two best scorers, Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin, hitting the net for a goal in the past three games, as well as overcoming series deficits of 2-0 and 3-2. This was a rematch of last year’s Cup when the Red Wings took it all and added to their championship pedigree. This year, however, was different and Crosby, the wunderkind and iconic torchbearer in the mold of Wayne Gretzky and Pens’ owner Mario Lemieux, has tasted his first title as the youngest captain to ever lead a Pens’ team to a championship. Before that the record was held by Lemieux. The postseason couldn’t have gone more according to fate than last night.

Bob Gainey poaches Jacques Martin from Panthers
![](http://assets.gearlive.com/images/member_photos/photo_15860.jpg)
Posted by Austin Kent Categories: Montreal Canadiens, Ottawa Senators, Florida Panthers,
It was announced on Monday that the Montreal Canadiens have come to terms on a multi-year coaching contract with Florida Panthers general manager Jacques Martin. Just one year into a four-year deal he signed to manage the Panthers, Martin will replace interim coach (and Habs GM) Bob Gainey on the bench.
Prior to signing with the Florida Panthers, Martin legitimized himself as a significant Canadian hockey figure as the head coach of the Ottawa Senators where a once formidable crop of Daniel Alfredsson, Dany Heatley and Jason Spezza were amongst the league’s best. Credit Martin with helping develop current NHL stars Zdeno Chara and Martin Havlat as well.
Last season, the Canadiens 100th as a franchise, the team disappointed before bowing out in the first round of the playoffs to the upstart Boston Bruins. Martin himself, as coach of the Sens, is no stranger to first-round exits, but his impact on the Ottawa record books (games coached, wins, etc.) speaks to his credibility.

Third annual Winter Classic to be held at Fenway?
![](http://assets.gearlive.com/images/member_photos/photo_15860.jpg)
Posted by Austin Kent Categories: Boston Bruins, Rumors,
Though nothing is official just yet, Boston Bruins owner Jeremy Jacobs is convinced that the third installment of the annual NHL Winter Classic will be held at Boston’s Fenway Park.
“Everything I’ve seen acts like, looks like, smells like it’s going to be in Boston,” Jacobs said in an Associated Press interview. “I don’t know of anybody else that’s gone through all of the search and process” to prepare for the game.
An official announcement is not expected until July. No word has been given as to a possible opponenet for the Bruins who finished last season with their highest win total since winning the Stanley Cup in 1972.
Previously the outdoor game has been held in Buffalo and Chicago at Ralph Wilson Stadium and Wrigley Field respectively.

David Price Makes His 2009 Debut Tonight
![](http://assets.gearlive.com/images/member_photos/photo_19053.jpg)
Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Tampa Bay Devil Rays, Cleveland Indians,
In what can only be seen as a disappointing start to the 2009 season for the reigning American League champion Tampa Bay, a “Ray of light” if you will make his season debut tonight against the Cleveland Indians.
David Price has been called up.
Price was dominant in a short amount of time during the Rays’ 2008 Cinderella season, including a win in Game 2 and a save in Game 7 against the Boston Red Sox in the ALCS.
The lefty was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2007 draft, and has been proving his worth to the Rays and their Triple A affiliate Durham ever since. He’ll be replacing Scott Kazmir on the roster, who went on the disabled list with a right quad injury, joining closer Troy Percival (shoulder) and second baseman Akinori Iwamura (knee). Price’s timing couldn’t be better.
With a 23-23 record, the Rays are fourth in the AL East, behind the always dominant Red Sox, the surprise Blue Jays and surging Yankees. It’s early in the season still, but a repeat of 2008 is already looking doubtful for the Rays. A strong push now may be the only thing that prevents Tampa from returning to form.
Price will face off against Cleveland’s Fausto Carmona, who is 2-4 in 2009 with a 5.74 ERA. Carmona’s last win came against the Rays on May 14 when he allowed four runs on four hits in 5 1/3 innings.
Price’s first pitch is scheduled for 6:05 PM ET, plus the top of the first inning.

Sergei Gonchar will more than likely suit up tonight
![](http://assets.gearlive.com/images/member_photos/photo_15860.jpg)
Posted by Austin Kent Categories: Pittsburgh Penguins,
Don’t look now, but Pittsburgh Penguins defensemen Sergei Gonchar looks poised to suit up for tonight’s Game 1 Eastern Conference Final match up with the Carolina Hurricanes.
After suffering a pretty violent knee-on-knee collision in Game 4, Gonchar sat out Games 5 and 6 before returning to suffer through bits of Game 7. Now, with a few more days rest, Gonchar looks to be pretty optimistic regarding his health for this most recent series.
Gonchar is currently third on the team in playoff scoring despite the injury and will no doubt play a significant role in dictating the Pens’ power play if healthy enough to suit up.
