In a month where Kanye West further distinguished himself with his antics and Serena Williams suggesting she could overcome laws of physics and anatomy by shoving a tennis ball down a line judge’s throat, perhaps what set the sports blogosphere the most ablaze was the Hall of Fame speech from his Airness, Michael Jordan. Something tells me that when this next pick, a two-time MVP, steps up to the podium, he will be nothing but gracious as he reflects on the good life that this game of basketball has given him.
Some might argue against his credentials for being a Hall-of-Famer, but I for one believe it is a no-brainer. Him, Amar’e Stoudemire and the rest of the “7 Seconds or Less” Phoenix Suns brought back fast-break fun to the league.

The Yankees’ Homegrown Solutions to Expensive Problems

There is a perception that the New York Yankees’ success is the direct result of a $200+ million payroll year after year. It seems that each offseason, the Yankees will just go out and fill their holes with cash, which was highlighted this past offseason with the acquisitions of CC Sabathia, A.J. Burnett, and Mark Teixeira. However, if you look a little deeper, you’ll see that the Yankees also have a healthy mix of homegrown talent on the field day after day.
There’s the obvious “face of the franchise” in Derek Jeter, whose Hall of Fame bat and classy off-the-field demeanor is famous nationwide; and there’s the scariest closer in baseball in Mariano Rivera, who can make even the most dangerous batters look like A-ball rookies in the box. But the Yankee scouts have been hard at work for the last few years, trying to find cheaper solutions to the on-field problems. Let’s face it, while the Yankee ownership doesn’t have trouble with the stratospheric payroll, why wouldn’t they want to cut back some costs if there are cheaper options available?

True Predictions: Jets, Patriots, Tony Romo, NFL in L.A.

Last week I went 3–2 with my predictions: The New York Jets have arrived early for both me and the New England Patriots. The Manning Brothers, Eli and Peyton, proved true to the pedigree with both leading great fourth quarter drives (I didn’t pick the New York Giants, but did pick the Indianapolis Colts) for the win.The Chicago Bears beat the Pittsburgh Steelers on a fourth quarter victory drive; I figured they’d want/need this one more. Yes, I predicted that the Baltimore Ravens would beat the San Diego Chargers. Gotta love Norv Turner’s decision-making. USC head coach Pete Carroll would love San Diego, wouldn’t he? And he’s seen the old Teflon take some hits at USC, right?

Here’s a fact you probably don’t know: Joel Pineiro is the third-best pitcher in baseball. Sitting behind dual-aces Adam Wainwright and Chris Carpenter on the St. Louis Cardinals’ starting pitcher depth chart, Pineiro has racked up a career year, worthy of top spot in the rotation on many other teams throughout baseball.
To this point in the season, Pineiro has a 15-11 record with a 3.24 ERA over an amazing 203 innings pitched. The only disappointing thing for those numbers is how they stack up against Wainwright and Carpenter, who each have more wins with a lower ERA. Now while his numbers do make him look like one of the best the National League has to offer, the journey for Pineiro hasn’t been easy.

True Predictions: New England Patriots, Brett Favre, Dallas Cowboys, Jay Leno

The new season has begun and it’s time to look at how things will shape up in Week Two. Remember, it’s a long season, so get comfy and let’s take a look at the big news coming out of the NFL.
Carolina Panthers’ QB Jake Delhomme’s confidence is shot and his ace receiver, Steve Smith, doesn’t believe in him either. Bill Cowher, meet your new team.
Super Bowl 2009 participants, the Arizona Cardinals, lose Game One to the San Francisco 49ers. Ouch, what’s the percentage of teams losing the first game of the season and winning the Super Bowl? Not good. What’s the percentage of losing Super Bowl teams tanking the next season? Sometimes history is a cruel thing.
Yesterday, the Tampa Bay Rays dropped their 11th straight game, one of the longest losing streaks for any team in 2009. These are the same Tampa Bay Rays whose bandwagon everybody jumped on after a successful run to the World Series last year. The Rays took those fans for a ride this year, and many thought that the team would be a force to be reckoned with; that their minuscule payroll would be able to match the Boston Red Sox or the New York Yankees. Boy, were those people wrong.
The Rays of ’09 are just another name in the bunch. Sure, the Rays aren’t going to lose 90 games this year like they had every season prior to 2008, but they’re certainly not the same team that they were a year ago. With neighbors like the Red Sox and Yankees in their division, 90 wins will never be good enough, and the Rays certainly aren’t going to win 90 games this year. If they continue at the pace they’ve had for the past month or so, they’ll be lucky to finish with a second .500 season.

So who wins the bronze medal in fantasy point guards heading into this season? Chris Paul gets consideration for first pick overall, so calling him the first point guard to be taken comes across as a big understatement. Deron Williams sits solidly in the #2 position. As you prepare for week 1 of the NFL season, keep in mind that NBA teams will open their training camps in just a few weeks. At least four to five point guard-eligible players will come off the board in between the early second round and the beginning of the third round. I always like a point guard who can score as well as shoot the three, plus of course dish the rock in elite fashion. “Mr. Big Shot” took his trade to his home state team in stride and led them to the conference finals last season.

A sure sign you are starting to lose touch with the pulse of popular culture is when you discover new songs and/or new bands while watching a TV show or a movie. By the time you catch Natalie Portman mentioning that the band name was “The Shins,” two years have passed, the movie has been out on DVD forever, and the band has not put out an album since.
Along the same vein, if the NBA has for whatever reason removed itself from your life for the last couple of years but now you return, it might come as a mild surprise that KG remains available here. After all, as recent as a couple of years ago, he was in the running for the first overall pick. Plus, if anything, his profile increased after the trade to Boston where the Celtics won a championship two seasons ago. Last year the ending was not so happy for the guys in green, as their captain missed the playoffs due to injuries. In mock drafts this summer, it seems folks are confidently calling his name in the early part of the second round. Let us put his fantasy game under the microscope.

John McDonald Cracks Number…Two

John McDonald is on a tear. Last night, he cracked his second home run of the season; a three-run shot that gives him a whopping seven RBI in 2009. The blast brings him within one of tying a season high and he now totals 11 home runs in his 11 year career. Like I said, John McDonald is on a tear.
Realistically, McDonald is a bench player. As the backup shortstop for the Toronto Blue Jays, McDonald has suffered from limited playing time in the last few seasons, but when his name has been scratched into the lineup, he’s wowed fans on a nightly basis with acrobatic defensive stops and highlight-reel plays. The only thing that has kept him out of the everyday lineup is his below-average bat. His under-.240 batting average over his career has been enough of a hindrance to his team to drop him to a utility position with the Jays.
