Two down, one to go. That’s the only thing going through the minds of the Los Angeles Angels. Two games into their ALDS series against the Boston Red Sox, the Angels are up two wins to zero, and can clinch a ride to the League Championship Series with a third win on Sunday afternoon. However, as has been said time and time again, the hardest game to win is the last one, and you can be sure that the Red Sox will not go down without a fight.
Fate is working both for and against the Angels in this series. It is working for them in the fact that since the Divisional Series’ were introduced in 1995, only four teams have ever come back to win a series after being down 2-0. Two of those were the 1995 Seattle Mariners who beat the New York Yankees, and the other was the 2001 Yankees, who took down the Oakland Athletics. However, fate is working against the 2009 Angels, because those other two teams that came back from 2-0 down were the 1999 and 2003 versions of the Boston Red Sox.

True Predictions: Falcons, 49ers, Broncos, Bengals, and Headaches

I went 3-2 over the past weekend (10–6 for the season). The Baltimore Ravens, even with questionable calls favoring the New England Patriots, came close to potentially taking a big step to the “next level.” However, a dropped pass by Mark Clayton ended that opportunity. New York Jets QB Mark Sanchez looked like the rookie he is in the game against the New Orleans Saints. Meanwhile the Pittsburgh Steelers and Denver Broncos took games that would not have surprised us if they went the other way. Minnesota Vikings QB Brett Favre continued to wow the masses with another impressive showing against his old team, the Green Bay Packers. If the Packers don’t improve that offensive line they’re not going to beat Brett and the Vikings when he makes his “homecoming” visit later in the season.

With the Minnesota Twins and Detroit Tigers extra-inning division game nail-biter in the books, we now know the eight playoff teams. With that, here’s a Gear Live exclusive detailing exactly what is going to happen in each respective league in the 2009 MLB playoffs. Some may shock you, but it’s all true, so pay attention.
In the National League, the St. Louis Cardinals and their best three-man rotation in baseball, led of course by Chris Carpenter and his near-unanimous “Comeback Player of the Year” award; will make short work of the Los Angeles Dodgers lineup. The St. Louis starters will each flirt with perfection, but L.A. will manage to score three measly runs in the three game series; one per game. Each run will be come via a solo blast by Manny Ramirez, still trying to show the baseball world that he can ruin anything special that baseball has to offer. The other series will be much the same, with the Philadelphia Phillies starting Cliff Lee in three games against the Colorado Rockies, just to see if he can finally prove that he actually is better than Roy Halladay. He’ll win two, but it will take a group effort for Philadelphia to clinch the divisional series.

A great addition to Yahoo fantasy basketball has been the mock draft feature. At any time, you can join a mock draft with real live folks like yourself and prep for your real league together. Different size leagues and different types of leagues are available. In the chat section during a mock draft I participated in earlier this week, someone remarked that his or her first three picks last year were Elton Brand, Al Jefferson and Jose Calderon. Despite that injury-riddled trio, this person apparently still cruised to his league title. It is hard to tell how much kudos he/she deserves, as it seems quite probable that the league this person participated in was weak. A good fantasy GM dominating a bad league should find a better league.
On the other hand, fantasy hoopsters know there is absolutely nothing wrong with a good player suiting up for a bad team. A lot of fantasy goodness can be head with these types of situations, as this next player illustrates.

Roy Halladay; 2009 Cy Young Winner

Roy Halladay of the Toronto Blue Jays may not have been the best pitcher this year. His August certainly saw to that (2-4, 4.71 ERA), but he is still one of the best pitchers, and he certainly deserves to win the American League Cy Young award. Some argue that the “Roy Halladay Sweepstakes” at the trade deadline threw him off his game enough to inflate his August numbers. Fourteen of his last 18 starts came against the New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox, or Tampa Bay Rays. That’s some pretty stiff competition. The sad part is that when the writers vote for the Cy Young winner, few of them will probably look deeper than his 17-10 record with a 2.79 ERA.
However, if there was a Cy Young award for the decade, Halladay certainly would be the American League’s top runner. Since 2000, Halladay has 139 wins to 69 losses for a ridiculous .668 win percentage, with a 3.40 ERA. Go ahead and try to find a pitcher who has been better over the last ten years. Here’s the thing – you won’t. He also has 47 complete games in 267 starts. Roy Halladay isn’t normal.

Last year Ron Chow and I were lucky enough to land the number one pick in the Dropping Dimes Expert League. Rewind to one year ago and LeBron James had major free-throw issues, issues I would find a way to deal with, but with the #1 pick, we went with Chris Paul. That league had two slots for centers, and as we watched our tier of big men empty out before the draft snaked its way back to us, we realized the draft forced us to go in another direction. Thus, we matched Paul with the best multi-faceted guards on our draft board. One of them was this next pick.

Round 2, Pick 9: Andre Iguodala, SG/SF, Philadelphia 76ers
Andre Iguodala has not taken that next step up the NBA ladder. Possessing freakish athleticism and a complete toolbox of skill, “Iggy” has the chops to be a perennial All-Star. A steady performer in the fantasy game, he lacks the big-game potential to garner a higher draft pick. However, with Kobe Bryant picked to lead this squad in round one, a do-everything stat-stuffer in the second round will fit in just fine.

True Predictions: Vikings, Jets, Ravens, and Sea Monsters

I went 4-2 this past weekend and 7-4 for the season. The Atlanta Falcons cannot make a statement and lose to the New England Patriots. You tell me if the San Francisco 49ers last second loss to Brett Favre and Minnesota Vikings equals “ugly” as I predicted. I think it counts more as “heart-breaking.” While it was a magical NFL moment to see Favre hoist that ball and to see Greg Lewis snatch it, I am of the mind that Favre will break down at some point during the season. I will either be right on this call or we may be seeing a John-Elway-like end to his career.

This player might best exemplify the difference between drafting for a roto league and a head-to-head league. Although picking players who shoot well ranks importantly across the board, shooting percentages will fluctuate week to week. Thus, a high percentage, but low volume shooter like this lead guard who plays north of the border may not be quite as valuable in a head-to-head league. Yet, in mock drafts that I have seen so far, he continues to be confidently targeted by prospective fantasy GMs. Let us put his game under the microscope as training camp opens this week.

How much would an opinion change, in regards to a career, if you could review the complete production all at once? Take a band like U2. Will people born in the future enjoy their more recent albums more because they are not saddled with expectation from their prior albums? Or will songs like “Sunday Bloody Sunday” and albums like “War” and “The Joshua Tree” always still stand out?
This next player has been recording seasons to the tune of 21 points, 11 rebounds and 2 blocks for 12 years now. Future NBA enthusiasts may wonder why he was not appreciated more in the fantasy realm as they, unlike us, hold the advantage of not being saddled by expectation and the need to be entertained.
