As Ray Allen dribbles out the clock on his days in Seattle before making the trek east (cue the Ray Allen/Allan Ray jokes already), he has to make a pit stop and play in the second round of our tourney. The schedule had Allen slotted in for the final match-up of the round, but with the draft day trade, it makes sense to move him and his dancing partner up a week. So who does Ray go toe to toe with? Read on to find out.
The past edition of our tourney updates received a record amount of page views for its first week, which means the ratio between reader votes and lurkers is insanely low. So hopefully these new match-ups more than meet your fancy, and you can shed the shy guy persona and make yourself heard!
Happy Canada Day!

With a new live-action/CGI movie coming out in mere weeks, it makes sense to reminisce about Optimus Prime locking horns with Megatron. Pound for pound they stand very evenly matched in a classic showdown between good and evil. Our second round continues to transform and roll out as we review the match-ups from last week and serve up two more confrontations to ponder. So take a break from your football cheat sheets for a few minutes, and flip it back to hoops!

Cardinals Acquire Maroth

Former Detroit Tigers pitcher Mike Maroth was acquired by the St. Louis Cardinals on Friday, after many rumors that he would be dealt to another team. With the return of Kenny Rogers to the Tigers pitching staff, Mike Maroth did not have a place on the Tigers starting rotation. Whom the Tigers received in return for Maroth has not been disclosed yet.
Don’t yet count out the Cardinals. Yes its a long shot that they’d win their division, but they have many crucial players on the DL who could help them have a 2007 playoff run. The Cards have shown that they are not ready to go down this season, acquiring both Tomo Ohka and Mike Maroth. They also are said to be interested in Chicago white Sox ace Mark Buehlre. If the Red Birds can keep their heads above water just long enough until Jim Edmonds, David Eckstein, Braden Looper, Yadier Molina, Preston Wilson, Mark Mulder and ace Chris Carpenter return from the DL, then they could be the scrappy team to beat that they were last year.
On Friday the Pittsburgh Pirates claimed First Baseman/Catcher Josh Phelps from waivers. In 36 games this year with the New York Yankees Josh hit .262 with two home runs and 12 rbi’s. Phelps was getting his playing time in New York playing first base, but with the emergence of Miguel Cairo the Bronx Bombers did not have a place on their team for Phelps. He is known for his power (He hit 20 home runs in 2003 with the Toronto Blue Jays), and hits very well against left handed pitching (A career .289 average against left handed pitchers). With Adam Laroche not living up to standards at first base, this is a nice pickup for a Pirates team in need of more offense.
Michael Barrett’s dugout and clubhouse fight with Ace Chicago Cubs pitcher Carlos Zambrano would be his last. It was heavily rumored that either Zambrano or Barrett would be moved soon, and today it was reported that Barrett had been traded to the San Diego Padres for catcher Rob Bowen. Barrett has nine home runs and 56 rbi’s at this point in the season. Bowen has a .268 average with two home runs and 11 rbi’s.

Over the last few months Andrei Kirilenko has complained about playing time, his teammates, his coaches, and his team’s playoff struggles. Despite that, coach Jerry Sloan is adamant he wants the Russian to stick it out with Utah.
“We’re gonna keep him, as far as I’m concerned,” coach Jerry Sloan said Monday. Sloan has a history of disliking trading his star players or letting them go without a fight (until they lose the other player that made them good in the first place, and then want out to “win” a championship before they retire and hope people remember them for the good they did, not the greed they showed at the end of their career), but he did admit that “...we’ve got to do what’s best for the franchise, always.”
Will Andrei stay in Utah? Who knows. He’s the Jazz’s highest paid player, and three years ago their best by far. Recently he’s been playing horribly for the Jazz, partly due to the fact new players have forced him into a forward role he’s not comfortable with. If the Jazz want Kirilenko to return to form, they need to give him more freedom on offense. The days of Stockton and Malone are over, Jerry. Let the Russian guy do things his own way.

Hoosiers coach Terry Hoeppner dies due to tumor
Posted by Brendon Lindsey Categories: Front Office, Kudos, News, College Football,
Normally I’ll make jokes and poke fun at what’s going on, but a few stories deserve to be handled with respect and dignity, and this is one of those.
Earlier today, Indiana football coach Terry Hoeppner died due to complications from a brain tumor. He was 59. Coach Hoeppner didn’t have a stellar career at Indiana (9-14), and since he was hired in 2004 as the new coach for the Hoosiers after a successful six years as the head coach at Miami (Ohio) (57-39), many fans were upset at what appeared to be a true lack of progress for the program. Over the past 18 months, however, Coach Hoeppner had begun treatment to battle a tumor found in his brain.

Former NBA player and one-time “possible next great forward” Vin Baker was charged with drunk driving earlier this morning while leaving a casino. Baker, 35, was a four-time NBA All Star, and in 2000 was a member of the gold medal USA Basketball team. During his later years with the Bucks, Baker was a solid 20-10 player, and part of a trade which saw him sent to Seattle and Shawn Kemp sent to Milwaukee. (At the time, both teams thought they were dumping a player in rapid decline for a more reliable one they could build a franchise around—whoops!)
Baker was pulled over for erratic driving and failed the sobriety test, which is something I’m sure he’s used to by this point. Police spokesman Lt. J. Paul Vance cited Baker as being very cooperative. I obviously wasn’t there, but I’d like to pretend Vin’s statement read, “It feels good to be mentioned again so close to the NBA Finals.”

It seems that the NBA Finals ended almost quickly as they started, but for all of us NBA draftniks whose teams were not the Spurs or Cavs it’s time to more concretely look forward to next season - it’s NBA Draft time. However, NBA general managers and scouts aren’t the only ones that need to keep an eye out for prospects to draft. Every
fantasy basketball manager would be wise to stay on top of the incoming rooks. Using my NBA Mock Draft over at About.com as a guide, here are the potential fantasy values for ten of the more noteworthy players that you should keep tabs on.

Today against the Cleveland Indians, Atlanta Braves 3B Chipper Jones got his 2,000th career hit with a single against Fausto Carmona in the second inning. With three more doubles, Chipper will join Eddie Murray and Chili Davis as the only switch-hitters with 2,000 hits, 400 doubles, and 350 home runs. With 369 career homers heading into today’s game, Chipper trails Dale Murphy by only 2 dingers.
On September 14, 1993 Chipper got his first hit in the MLB; on August 18, 2000 Chipper reached the 1,000 milestone. His jump from 1,000 to 2,000 was slightly faster than from 1-1,000, so maybe Chipper isn’t slowing down, after all.
So far this season, Jones is batting .316 (.015 above his career average) with 12 HR and 27 RBIs.
