Madison Square GardenMadison Square Garden. The home of sports in Manhattan. The fourth and current incarnation of the historic arena opened on Feb. 14, 1968, and has been home to the NHL’s Rangers and NBA’s Knicks ever since, as well as several other professional sports teams, as well as countless concerts and events over the years. For those Rangers, the history of MSG and the franchise is thick, having had dozens of Hall of Fame players call the arena home, three Stanley Cup finals, and an All-Star Game take place within its walls.

Josh JohnsonJosh Johnson isn’t going anywhere. The All-Star right-hander will suit up for the Florida Marlins in 2010 after GM Michael Hill told the media that he can say “with certainty” that Johnson will be a Marlin on Opening Day 2010. While the two parties discussed a contract extension without success recently, it seems that Johnson’s immediate future is secure. He is still controllable for the next two seasons, and while Florida tried to restructure towards the postseason, players like Johnson and teammate Hanley Ramirez are the guys to focus on.

Alex OvechkinAlexander Ovechkin is injured. And suspended. On Dec. 1 against the Hurricanes, Ovechkin was the perpetrator in a knee-on-knee hit against defenseman Tim Gleason and was assessed a two-game suspension by the NHL for it. The unexpected consequence of the hit was that Ovechkin injured himself and had to leave the game. He also missed Wednesday night’s game against the Florida Panthers. The Capitals haven’t had to do anything to make the best of a bad situation. The National Hockey League did it for them.

Alex PietrangeloThe 2010 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships are fast approaching. Being hosted by the cities of Saskatoon and Regina in Saskatchewan, Canada, the Canadians have recently begun forming the team that will try to defend five straight gold medal victories. Among them will likely be NHL defenseman-ready Alex Pietrangelo, who is currently a top prospect in the St. Louis Blues organization. For this season and last, Pietrangelo has been with the Blues, getting his feet wet, but the club seems to think that he’s not quite ready for centerstage, which, in today’s rushed world, may be a good idea.

California Golden SealsThe National Hockey League has gone through several eras in its long and storied history. The “Original Six” era is still commonly seen as one of the most important times, but the “Expansion” era from 1967-1992 played a major part in shaping the league we see today. In 1967, six teams were added to the league, doubling the amount of teams and setting the stage for new rivalries. Of those six teams, one in particular stands out. Or doesn’t.

John WallJune is the month for the NBA Draft, when fans and experts alike chart players and teams to determine which future prospect will be taken by which team. The process is both exciting and captivating, as it hints at the future of many NBA ball clubs. Yet, NBA Draft buzz doesn’t start in June. Even though the college basketball season is just underway, murmurings of where players might go in the 2010 NBA Draft have already surfaced. Here’s an early look at how the draft might shape up.

1.  New Jersey Nets select PG John Wall, Kentucky, 6-4, 195lbs
Wall is the consensus top pick at this point. Wall has great size and athleticism for a point guard. After six games, he’s averaging 18.5 ppg, 7.8 apg, 4.0 rpg, 2.5 spg, while shooting 56% from the field and 80% from the line. He somewhat resembles Derrick Rose. Though the Nets have Devin Harris, it’s hard to imagine them passing on a potential superstar like Wall.

LeBron James versus Kobe BryantFan voting is a major folly of the NBA All-Star Game. Each year, NBA fans are allowed to vote to determine which players start in the esteemed game. The problem with this format is that 1) fans on the whole don’t know squat about which players actually deserve the honor, and 2) fans are biased. Since online voting has been allowed, Chinese players, such as Yao Ming, have had an unfair advantage due to their huge popularity in China. This leads to a tainted All-Star Game, where, in all likelihood Yao may be voted in as the starting center for the Western Conference, despite not playing in one single game this season to injury.

With that in mind, here are the players—after considering only the first month of the season—who deserve to start in the 2010 NBA All Star Game in February.

Roberto AlomarRoberto Alomar is generally seen as one of the best defensive second basemen of his era. After breaking into the big leagues in a big way with the San Diego Padres, he was traded to the Toronto Blue Jays with Joe Carter in a blockbuster deal that sent Fred McGriff and Tony Fernandez the other way. This turned out to be a launching point for Alomar’s career. He was an All-Star in every season during the 90’s, and in total 12 times. He won four silver slugger awards and 10 gold gloves, and is now eligible for entry into the Hall of Fame. It’s a no-brainer that he’ll make it, the question is whether or not he’ll do so in his first year of eligibility.
