New Leafs shine in debut

Toronto Maple Leafs GM Brian Burke can sleep soundly. His widely publicized trades on Sunday saw his team acquire goalie J.S. Giguere, defenseman Dion Phaneuf, and forward Fredrik Sjostrom. All three players made their Leafs debut on Tuesday night, and each contributed in their own way to a 3-0 Leafs shutout victory against the slumping New Jersey Devils. Fans were excited by the trade announcements, and with introductions out of the way, both on and off the ice, it’s back to business for the Maple Leafs organization.

True Predictions: Colts To Take Super Bowl

Went 2-0 with the Indianapolis Colts-New York Jets and New Orleans Saints-Minnesota Vikings match-ups. Season record hits 51-37. Look for the Indianapolis Colts to defeat the New Orleans Saints at Super Bowl XLIV. The Saints defense wants to punish Peyton Manning and the Colts defense may be without a healthy DE Dwight Freeney.

The first half of the season has brought many surprises and stories. The Lakers stand atop the NBA with a 37-12 record, and there’s a five-way race between Carmelo Anthony, Kevin Durant, LeBron James, Kobe Bryant, and Dwayne Wade for the scoring title. With much of the second half of the season left to play, there’s still a lot of basketball to determine who’s most deserving of the NBA’s prestigious individual awards. However, if the season ended today, here’s how things might shape up.
Most Valuable Player Award
LeBron James, Cleveland Cavaliers - While plenty of arguments can be made for Kobe Bryant, the Cleveland Cavaliers aren’t worth much without King James. While his turnovers could be lower (3.6 per game), he’s averaging 29.5 ppg, 7.1 rbpg and 8.0 apg, while shooting over 50% from the field. He’s also improved his shooting from beyond the arc to a more than respectable 36%.

Negro Leagues Hall of Fame facing financial trouble

The Negro Leagues Hall of Fame is in trouble. Faced with the dwindling economy, the museum is facing the very real threat that they may have to close their doors. Located in Kansas City, the Hall opened its doors in 1990, and for the last 20 years has continued to teach thousands of baseball fans about the injustices in the history of the game for decades. Not being allowed to play in the MLB until Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier in 1947, African-Americans began their own leagues as early as 1887 to play the greatest game in the world.

A lot of noise is made when brothers get together in hockey. Whether they play together like the Sedins in Vancouver, or the Koivus going head to head when the Ducks meet the Wild. People talk about who will outscore who, how the brothers interact, what their lives off the ice are like - all kinds of things. On March 20, 1971, a very similar moment happened in the most unique of ways. Brothers Dave and Ken Dryden faced each other from 200-feet apart.

Plan the parade route! The Edmonton Oilers are undefeated in February! Too bad for them that they went winless in January. They picked up two points in overtime losses thanks to the NHL’s generous point structure. A 13-game losing streak dropped the Oilers far out of contention and into the basement in the Western Conference. Part of their losses included a pair to the Calgary Flames who, for the first time in history, swept the season series in the Battle of Alberta by easily taking all six games. To say things have never looked bleaker for Edmonton may be an understatement.

Blockbuster breakdown: Calgary Flames

The Calgary Flames were part of the first of two bold trades involving the Toronto Maple Leafs on Sunday. The blockbuster trade saw the Flames give up defensive strongman Dion Phaneuf, as well as right winger Fredrik Sjostrom and prospect Keith Aulie. In exchange, they picked up forwards Niklas Hagman, Matt Stajan, Jamal Mayers, and defenseman Ian White. Calgary’s offensive woes have plagued them in January, and the addition of three mid-level forwards, they hope to provide a shot of adrenaline that will carry them through the playoffs.

Blockbuster breakdown: Anaheim Ducks

As part of Sunday’s blockbuster trades, Ducks GM Bob Murray added a couple of key pieces from Toronto to his struggling team. The Ducks picked up forward Jason Blake and goaltender Vesa Toskala. Blake is the key piece for Anaheim as they’ll try to make a late push to grab a playoff spot from one of the other slumping teams in the West. They had to give up former Stanley Cup winner and current backup goaltender J.S. Giguere to get them, which in their eyes was a bargain.

It seems blockbuster trades aren’t entirely a thing of the past in the NHL. But it took a blockbuster GM like Toronto’s Brian Burke to do it. With two colossal trades on Sunday, Burke added defensemen Dion Phaneuf, winger Fredrik Sjostrom and prospect Keith Aulie from Calgary, giving up forwards Niklas Hagman, Matt Stajan, Jamal Mayers, and defenseman Ian White. The second deal sent forward Jason Blake and goalie Vesa Toskala to the Ducks in return for goaltender J.S. Giguere.

Washington’s Mike Green suspended 3 games for headshot

On Saturday afternoon, the National Hockey League announced that Washington Capitals defenseman Mike Green has been suspended three games for an elbow he gave to Florida Panthers forward Michael Frolik during the first period of a game on Jan. 29. Frolik was fine and Green was assessed a minor penalty for elbowing, but the ramifications of this type of incident are huge in the hockey world and are one of the prime items on the agenda - player safety.
