The Seattle Mariners’ fans are going to have to wait an extra few days before they can meet their newest star in Cliff Lee. In case you hadn’t heard, Lee has been suspended for the first five games on the upcoming season for an incident that occurred last Monday in a Spring Training game against the Arizona Diamondbacks. An errant pitch from Lee soared above D’Backs catcher Chris Snyder’s head, and a bench-clearing scuffle followed before the dust settled.

On Tuesday night, Dallas’ Brandon Segal scored his second game-winning goal of the season against the Sharks. He scored the goal at the 4:30 mark of the second period to put the Stars up 3-0. The score would move to 4-2 before Dallas netted four more in the third in an 8-2 rout of San Jose. But full credit goes to Segal for scoring the game-winner, as that was certainly the moment – less than halfway through the game – where San Jose knew they were finished and mailed in the rest of the night.

NHL hopes to punish for headshots before the playoffs

The NHL has announced that they want to implement their head-shots rule as soon as possible. There’s just some of the usual red tape to be taken care of first. Two years ago, the league adopted the affectionately-named “Sean Avery” rule the day after Avery was seen blatantly obstructing Devils goalie Martin Brodeur without any other concern for on-ice action. However, the league called it an “interpretation” of an existing rule. That in itself is the NHL’s biggest problem. Many rules are open to interpretation.

The arrival of Spring Training ushers in the season it is named for. It’s an exciting time of year for sports, as it is once again time for baseball. Florida and Arizona play host to well over a thousand players and coaches, and fans flock in for a glimpse at the next boys of summer. But with the entire action taking place in just over a few weeks, it’s not too difficult to become lost in all the action that has little impact on the eight months of baseball that follow.

Sheets rocked by Reds isn’t a problem

Ben Sheets was hit hard again. In his third Spring Training game with Oakland on Monday, he gave up 10 runs without recording an out against the Reds. Yet he and the Athletics claim that, runs aside, it was a good outing. Sheets is recovering from elbow surgery and is trying to return to the form he showed with the Brewers two years ago. Spring starts are the latest step in his return to the mound, and is still projected to start for Oakland on Opening Day.

Eastern Conference race is polarizing…mostly

As the NHL season winds down, the Eastern Conference is shaping up and teams are starting to separate in the standings. It seems that the more north you look, the stronger the teams generally are, with the exception of the first and last-place teams. Four out of five Northeast teams hold a playoff spot, while four out of five Southeast teams don’t. As it stands right now, it’s going to be awfully hard for anybody to swap tickets to the postseason.

Retirement coming for Cox, Gaston

This season marks the final one for both Atlanta Braves manager Bobby Cox and Toronto Blue Jays manager Cito Gaston. These two coaches have a long history and friendship together, going back over 30 years when they played together in the Venezuelan and Texas Leagues. Both have very opposite coaching styles – Cox is known for his occasional angry outbursts, while Gaston can make an umpire self-reflect with a simple wordless stare. Now, the two share a common destination that each will arrive at in very opposite ways.

Stempniak shines as NHL second star

If you haven’t yet heard of Lee Stempniak, you’re not alone. Actually, unless you live in the St. Louis, Toronto, or now Phoenix areas, you probably haven’t heard about him yet, and won’t again for a long, long time. Nevertheless, Stempniak was honored by the NHL as the Second Star of the Week ending Mar. 14 for his strong performances against Vancouver, Carolina and Atlanta. The newest little Coyote has already made a huge impact with his new club.

How much can you do when you’ve already done it all? Lots, if you’re Zack Greinke. As everybody saw, the starting pitcher lit up the opposition and won the 2009 AL Cy Young Award with the Kansas City Royals, putting everybody else on notice that he’s officially arrived and ready to throw. And at just 26 years old, there’s still plenty of throwing left in the right arm of the Royals’ ace.

It’s happened already. Less than a week after concerns about what would happen if a star NHL player were to be suspended for a dirty hit, Washington’s Alex Ovechkin – arguably the greatest player in the game, receives a major penalty and a game misconduct for hurling Chicago defenseman Brian Campbell into the boards in the first period of a Sunday afternoon game. Ovechkin now faces the possibility of supplemental discipline after further review of the incident by the league.
